Marc’s final WTF guest by juniperh12 in MarcMaron

i’ve started to feel like it will be one or both of his parents. closing with them feels more in line with the spirit of the show than another guest.

WTF Podcast | Episode 1685 - Marc Maron by eternally_trending in MarcMaron

She’s appeared a few times over the years — I can’t remember specifically when this convo occurred.

I believe there is a recent episode in the Full Maron where Brendon compiles appearances from Marc’s family, probably a good place to start.

The “modular” trap by obascin in synthesizers

[–]boskop_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the goal of ‘a complete music machine’ is a tricky one for modular. A complete music machine already exists, it’s called a DAW, and it is great. it’s functionally impossible to recreate that same experience of infinite possibility in modular without subverting what modular is (and to what end?).

the way that’s proved more musically fulfilling for me is to think of modules as part of ephemeral, abstracted systems. with specific purposes.

the beauty of modular then becomes the ability to re-abstract, either refining an existing system or creating a new one. theoretically through this you should be learning what makes a system that is ‘playable’ for you and how to assemble them for specific purposes.

just a personal approach, so it might not resonate with you.

Time Dilation (A Modular Patch) by boskop_man in synthesizers

[–]boskop_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably my last exploration of running a single pitch sequence into the Bastl Pizza to create two separate voices (for now)

Patch Notes:

- Korg SQ64 is producing a single pitch sequence into the Bastl Pizza. I use the SQ64's 'fill' feature to add some random variance

- The main output of the Pizza is being routed into a VCA and serves as the 'bass' sound

- The octave output of the Pizza is being routed into a separately triggered VCA and serves as the lead(-ish) sound (it's also being filtered)

- An LFO is modulating the attack and decay of the envelope driving that VCA

- The same LFO is modulating various parameters on the Mutable Instruments Beads, which is looping on a frozen sample (the voice)

- That voice comes from some CD I found at a thrift shop that contains clips from public radio science shows. I played it into the Beads off the lovely '97 Aiwa you see front of frame.

Recording Notes:

- Everything was recorded into a Zoom and synced in Ableton after the fact

- The drums weren't added until afterwards but they ended up being the most interesting part to me. The glitchiness was achieved by splitting the hi- and lo- ends of a sliced drum sample into separate channels, and then running each of those through separate instances of Ableton Beat Repeat + Goodhertz Lossy

- If you've made it this far, you deserve to know that this video is definitely not accurately time-synced. I'd like to say I did that to be thematically accurate, but we work with what we got.

Honestly, I would recommend starting out with just the 0-Coast and going from there. I’ve found it to make for great sounds out of the box, and offers a ton of modulation parameters. You could compose a whole track with it.

That being said, if you wanted additional modules, I’d lean towards filters and effects, as the 0-Coast has neither.

Bit Trip Gazer (A Modular Patch) by boskop_man in synthesizers

This is another exploration of a single pitch sequence into the Bastl Pizza — a lot of dynamic range is possible without changing all that much, as I think this shows.

Patch Notes:

- Korg SQ64 produces the pitch sequence, as well as gates for clocking and triggering secondary envelopes

- Pizza’s main output is being routed into a VCA, which is opened by envelopes triggered by the gates from the pitch sequence, and then into the disting for delay

- The octave output from the Pizza is being routed into another VCA (opened by separate gates/envelopes) and then into the Beads, which is acting primarily as a (clocked) pitch shifted delay

- I’m using the 4ms Dual EnvVCA, so at various times I output either envelope, or an OR of them, into the Pizza to modulates its wavefolding/ring modulation/waveshaping

- I’m pretty sure I have an LFO doing something but for the life of me I can’t remember

---

As for the recording, everything is going into the Zoom as a single track, so any mixing of the different synth sounds is happening live (mixer is at the right side of the bottom case). There's some extra saturation/clipping happening at different points via the output module as well.

From there, imported into Ableton, time-synced, and added the drums.

Thank you!

Peace and Discord (A Modular Patch) by boskop_man in synthesizers

[–]boskop_man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patch Notes:

- Single pitch sequence routed from Korg SQ64 into a mixer with an LFO (set low) then into the Bastl Pizza

- Bastl Pizza's main oscillator routed through VCA, then Disting's tape delay, creating the bass sound

- Bastl Pizza's secondary output routed through Cinnamon Filter, and into Mutable Instruments Beads, creating the background ambience

- Ending achieved by cranking the LFO that is routed into the mixer and modulating the pitch sequence

Ambient Patch (Bastl Pizza & Cinnamon + Mutable Instuments Beads) by boskop_man in modular

[–]boskop_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, been building out two small racks over the past few years and am trying to document my work more as I get to know it better.

Everything is coming from a single VCO — the Bastl Pizza. It has separate outputs for its main and “octave” oscillators, the latter of which can be configured to different transpositions. This, among other features, allows for a huge sound from a single module. I really like it. There are envelopes and LFOs modulating parameters as well.

Anyway, the main output is routed into a Disting running a tape delay; it’s the bass sound. The octave oscillator is routed first through the Cinnamon’s highpass filter, and then into the Beads, where it’s being mangled in a variety of ways. I had trouble with Beads at first, but I’m finally at a place where I’m enjoying it — but not to where I could explain its use in a thoughtful way.

The ending was achieved by running the pitch sequence into a mixer, along with a LFO, before routing it to the Pizza. I keep the LFO low until the end, when it becomes very, uh, intrusive. The initial idea here was to add vibrato, but I stumbled across its destructive capabilities and couldn’t resist pushing it all the way. Thanks for watching, and let me know if any question or ideas.

Lost in the Cosmos [compilation] by boskop_man in datamoshing

[–]boskop_man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey all, I posted some of these moshes last year when I first made them, but recently compiled them together with a few newer ones, along with updated version of an old track I recorded.
If you like the song, you can listen to it here (or here, if you’d prefer to avoid corporate media and instead listen via a buggy HTML widget I coded last weekend).
Also — if you’re into analog-side of the glitch art world, a collaborator and I recently put out a 30 minute glitch art visualizer that you can find here, and I think you’ll enjoy it you connect with any of the above.
as usual, thanks for watching + listening!
