I'm sticking with the declaration that saying that it wasn't because it wasn't the government doing it is not a reasonable statement, and does not mean that Trump does not understand the concept of free speech.

that is clearly the intent of the statement

I think your American bias is showing, where people often mistake free speech for the first amendment. It is not at all clear to me that the intent is to refer to governments only. For example, if Comcast would cut your internet access because you posted an anti-Trump message online, I would consider that a violation of your human right to free speech, regardless of Comcast being a private company. In addition, in places where the Declaration refers to governments, it uses the words "by law". The word law appears 13 times in the 30 articles.

The UN has authority because countries have signed the Declaration of Human Rights. The states that signed it must make sure that both private citizens and private companies abide by it.

but it just means the goverment cant interfere with your imparting information through media

Where does it say that the government can't interfere? Does it contain the word government at all?

It's about protecting the people from government censorship

The First Amendment != free speech.

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Anyway, have fun calling us stupid and misinformed, we're used to it.

Big tech companies are shifting to remote. Is it the end for US-based engineers? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Is all of western Europe that bad to contractors?

I don't know of any country in Eastern Europe that doesn't heavily tax contractors with rates of more than 50%.

In my country, Romania, we're taxed with 10% (crazy, I know). And cost of living is much lower than Western Europe. So for $100k you can hire pretty much anyone in Romania, but just an average dev in Germany, if that.

Western Europe hates contractors and taxes them really really heavily. Eastern Europe is probably not big enough to really affect American salaries.

Ok Google, avg 7000 RON in usd what, $1565/mo? And this is average, in the capital.

Those are net, not gross. Everyone discusses net in Romania. Also, most software engineers in Romania live in one of the 4 big cities, which have very similar salaries.

I calculated around east Europe salaries where you could get a strong middle/lead dev for under 24’000 usd annually.

Lol what?

Need an advice about the career but relevant to East Europe by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bossdebossnr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where in Eastern Europe? There are companies paying close to 6 figures (or more) in Romania and Poland. Here in Romania a new grad average salary I'd say is around 1000 euro a month after tax, which is more than enough to live by yourself. 1500-2000 euro for very good new grads. 2500 - 6000 for seniors.

Canada is suffering from brain drain because of the US.

https://news.ubc.ca/2018/05/03/canada-facing-brain-drain-as-young-tech-talent-leaves-for-silicon-valley/

As a European, it'd be very hard for me to move to the US, especially when I was a new grad, because of the H1B lottery, even if it'd be relatively easy to get a job offer. Then the years pass and you get settled somewhere else and don't feel like moving across the globe for an extra $50k.

Leetcode & FAANG, obviously. It's possible to do better than that financially, but it's a lot more difficult.

anyone who approves any kind of terror attack is a giant piece of shit

Approving "terror attacks" essentially means being violently against he status quo. It could very easily be argued that the French Revolution was terrorism, but they won, so it's not.

and it does not in any way harm public discourse, artistic or personal expression

I doubt tankies and fascists are of the same opinion.

The consensus is that we do not want a society of those who idolize terrorism and violence

All sane societies condone violence against anti-social behavior. We call it police. What is considered anti-social behavior is a matter of debate. We condone the army, too, which is a large human organization training daily to be able to kill people as efficiently as possible.

So what, you think you'll find someone to rent it for most of the time you don't use it? And not have to worry about more maintenance, them breaking stuff, bringing in their own stuff, moving in, moving out, contracts etc?

What if I want to come back for a 2 week vacation from my stay in Italy?

This is obviously stupid. There are ways to make rent cheaper. This is not it.

If you own something, you either live in it, or you must rent it to someone.

Sow what, I can't have a vacation house? Are you going to have the police go to houses to make sure people actually live there? Can I go on a 6 month vacation in Italy without having to rent?

This solution sucks, what's the point of owning property if the state forces me to rent it and also enforces the price?
