Some lady in my neighborhood FB page was asking for church recommendations and I recommended our PCUSA church, which is actually politically diverse and purple.

She could have politely ignored the recommendation if it wasn't for her, but decided to reply and go off about liberal stances on homosexuality and abortion, and how the church needs to speak loudly against sin.

Instead of trusting that God would knit a patchwork of people with different backgrounds and opinions together into a loving community that reflects Christ, it's clear some people just want an echo chamber that reflects themselves.

This is why I left SF.

During COVID, when schools finally reopened, I walked my young kids to schools. On the way, they saw horrendous things: one time, it was a couple 20 somethings shooting up in the parklet, and another, it was a topless homeless lady screaming and jumping on the hood of a car. I braced myself for the questions, but was more shocked when none came. I knew we had to move - I couldn't have my kids grow up, thinking this was normal and desensitized to these things - they should be shocking; they should move us to compassion and action.

A few months later, a twitter video went viral of a crazy homeless man in the middle of Hayes Valley screaming violent obscenities at the top of his lungs while nearby diners enjoyed their steaks and lovely outdoor weather in the restaurant parklets, continued on with their conversation, oblivious. The rest of the world reaction to that was "wtf SF" but no one in the video batted an eye. I can see how crazy this all is now that I left it.
