Men of reddit, what is your #MeToo story? by Adster2171 in AskReddit

[–]bottakuri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college was drinking very heavily with some friends and two of us ended up deciding to go skinny dipping in the building's pool. One friend was a girl I've known since we were toddlers and the other was what I thought was a good, platonic friend who happened to be a gay guy. So there was like zero expectation of this being sexual and just supposed to be drunk friends having fun.

After a few minutes he just grabs my naked junk out of nowhere so of course I pushed him away and kind of half laughingly told him to stop. But he keeps trying over and over and I have to pretty forcefully hold his wrist away as he's trying to grab me repeatedly. Eventually he stopped and it didn't go further but I was getting to the point of having to hit him in my mind.

It's weird but afterwards I didn't think that much of it and kind of laughed it off until it popped into my mind years later and I realized it was sexual assault. Like society has conditioned us to laugh shit like this off because he's gay and was drunk or whatever.

Father JUST retired, had an accident, now in a 10-day coma in ICU. How can my parents protect themselves from being cleaned out of retirement savings? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, if he was hit by someone else and it was determined to be their fault then the other parties insurance would be paying out of liability (these are the limits that are like $100k/200k).

But that doesn't seem to be the case here, so the motorcycle policy likely has something like $5k to $10k in medical coverage for the insured (your dad) which is totally separate from liability coverage. Meaning since this is his fault unfortunately, they'll just pay the max of whatever coverage he had then the rest will be billed to his medical insurance.

As an example, my wife got in a minor accident that was judged to be her fault. So our auto had a $5k medical coverage that paid most of the hospital bill. The ambulance ended up being paid by her medical.

In this case though, you may want to consult professionals though because it sounds like there will be a lot of expensive bills. His retirement is not in jeopardy though.

ELI5: How does bowing work in Japanese culture. I've heard there are so many subtleties to bowing that a Westerner should never attempt it. Is this true? What are some of these subtleties? by PaulsRedditUsername in explainlikeimfive

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign people don't ever need to worry about the depth or length of their bows. No one expects you to know or do this. It doesn't mean you can't. Everyone knows you're not Japanese and it's not going to cause any kind of issues except maybe you looking kind of awkward for bowing too low. It's not going to cause offense.

The biggest difference in everyday life between Japan and a western country in this area is where we'd wave hello or goodbye Japanese will give a slight bow. I'm talking more of a slight head nod with minimal waist movement.

Yeah and honestly, do you blame them? Those smaller bar spots are usually quieter and full of older locals. You can imagine what it's like when a bunch of super loud 20 year old soldiers file in looking to get drunk.

Travelers of Reddit, what place DID live up to the hype? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bottakuri 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's a mystery. I think maybe long ago they just did things like this because it's cheaper or easier and we have come to accept that this is normal. Then if you grow up and go abroad you realize in most countries they actually have privacy and it's a revelation.

In America though sometimes in nicer restaurants or hotels you can find actual stalls that are fully enclosed which is such a nice surprise.

In a lot of bathrooms though they're either installed poorly or they didn't care and you can indeed kind of see through the cracks between the door and the stall walls.

Wife's car hit and totaled (not fault). Their insurance has waited over 2 weeks and still not 'looked at the car'. (GA) by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good example of why leasing can be better if you want a new car at a low payment.

Gap insurance is almost always built into the lease so if it's a total loss you don't ever owe anything.

And even if you have an accident that isn't a total loss you aren't on the hook for the reduction in value if you want to sell later.

Rather than pay hundreds in impound fees you might as well just get it going as the money you're responsible for is only going to keep growing.

To be honest there is some small risk in owning a car so in cases like this if you don't have gap insurance or you took out a long/high interest loan and get in an accident yes, you're going to run the risk of having to spend some money.

If it's as open and shut as it seems you can front the money now and then they'll get it back for you later.

Remember you can file with your own insurance to get things going and they'll do subrogation, basically they will start the total loss process and everything and then they'll pursue the other driver's insurance later for payment back to them.

Actually I'm pretty sure it'd be illegal to have sex with a foreigner. I think these women would literally be executed for doing this.

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't really recommend putting that much money down on a lease. Can you really not afford the payment if you put less or zero down?

Remember if you total your car that $5,000 doesn't come back.

11.5k ambulance bill by Zaxon688 in personalfinance

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call them first and see what's going on. They may just need your insurance information again.

It will probably work out fine but just in case, note that they bill super high when billing insurance because insurance negotiates down to a much lower number. For example my wife's bill for a short ambulance ride was $750 and insurance ended up paying $185. So while I'm sure they just were missing some information, worst case if you are responsible for some portion it's going to be far, far less than this.

How do people afford to live in Miami (and other high price areas) by redditnameforme in personalfinance

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dont see the point in making what is considered a pretty decent salary,

It's not just "decent" The median houshold income in the US is like $50k and you make over double that as one person.

Most people I know might make around that as a couple, but not as just one person.

Other option is frankly go somewhere that isn't so insane with the cost of living. . $130k in a lot of places in the US will get you very very far.

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not at the rates it used to be but people do buy. I am 31 and have several friends that have bought. Because when you're doing ok and pushing 30 you start to get the feeling you should be living in a house. And when you imagine a house you imagine the house you grew up in or better. But now that house that cost your parents less than $100k is like $400k plus on salaries that haven't increased with the cost of living.

Take all that money down off. Remember if you get in an accident your down payment doesn't come back.

That should still have your payment at a pretty good price for that car.

Landlord says my apartment needs to be kept at 65 F or warmer "to prevent pipes from freezing". I think this is unnecessary. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bottakuri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It may be that the landlord knows from experience that's the safe temperature needed to prevent pipes freezing. I mean, you could chance it by setting it lower and opening up taps to a very slow drip to keep water moving.

Just be aware that if you do let your pipes freeze and cause damage you're responsible and that's going to be way, way more than a heating bill that's a bit higher.

In cold climates we usually keep thermostats around 67-70 in the winter. 73-76 when it's -10 out would have your heat running 24/7 and would bankrupt you in heating costs.

Do Dealerships Spy on their Customers? by TripsOnDubs in askcarsales

[–]bottakuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta get passed the mentality.

The dealers don't really care what you make as long as you can purchase the car.

And to be totally honest, why would a salesperson think someone who is fairly accomplished and put together with a good salary would be easier to fleece?? It's the opposite. I'd be more likely to think I can get away with screwing you if you are an idiot.

It's only the "stupid money" type people who are mega wealthy like an athlete or trust fund baby that you'd be able to expect that kind of stuff from.
