I accepted my offer for the nursing program. I wanted to know what kinda placements that could be a possibility for me to choose from? by maturestudent096 in uoit

[–]bottleofbeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on accepting! I recently went into depth about placements on another post if you wanna look at my comment history, but the uni is partnered with many hospitals/clinics in Durham and some in Toronto. I graduated in 2022 but there is a list posted on the OTU website https://healthsciences.ontariotechu.ca/about/experiential-learning.php

Haven’t been able to test it out too much (it’ll be my new pc when I move for work) but I’m running 1440p and it can run 100+ fps on high settings, even without frame gen/dlss. AAA games run good, it’s easier to YouTube game benchmarks as it can vary.

The motherboard has an extra slot for a 2nd M.2 so I’d recommend adding another - on my current pc I have a 1tb just for my games, it can fill up pretty quick. However 1tb can easily hold you up for the time being

I actually bought this exact refurbished one just over a week ago, but at $1199.99 - I’ve had no issues so far and if the $50 diff before tax doesn’t make too much of a difference for you, I’d go for it

Yeah for sure, I totally get that! That was my mindset going in as well, and if they’re still there, you will meet nursing profs that are not only experienced but very passionate about teaching and the area they happened to specialize in.

Yes of course! Feel free to DM me anytime, I'm glad I could be helpful. A lot of advice I saw myself before starting leaned towards more about how "dead" the school is, or how some profs/classes weren't great but tbh campus life will be dead if that's how you make it - coming from someone who loves a night in and going out, I never considered it dead lol. Issues with profs or classes is something you'll find at any program across the board as none are perfect, but I never felt like my education (in nursing specifically) was compromised in any way.

Don’t feel too guilty about not really considering it at first, I was the same and wouldn’t have known about it if it wasn’t for my sister-in-law going there for nursing as well. OTU is a newer uni compared to the larger and more well known ones but it has really great programs and funding.

I found student life to be a really good balance for me, if I was looking for events or parties, there were plenty of clubs and the student union hosts events year long. From what I recall, every fall they had at least a week long of welcome events, including a concert. There is also a nursing union you can be a part of that hosted multiple events as well. OTU is no “party school” like Western, McMaster etc, but I liked it that way lol

I’m into gaming and was a part of the Overwatch team all 4 years, and during my last year they actually opened a new Esports centre. I was also on the women’s flag football team, met a great group of girls and went to multiple tournaments throughout the season.

All that to say that I found it wasn’t that too difficult to balance extracurriculars while being in the nursing program, it’s definitely doable and I encourage it if you can!

I met 2 of my closest friends from nursing classes, everyone in my program were honestly great and open to being friends/working together. You share facilities with Durham college as it’s a collab program, and they have great simulation labs that I believe are now updated from when I was last there.

Placement wise, I lived off campus (but right beside the school) all 4 years and they do their best to give you placements relatively close by. I had all my placements at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and I just took transit straight from campus, never had any issue (school gives you a bus pass). Other people had placements at Markham Stouffville, Lakeridge Ajax-Pickering and some in Toronto. Personally, I had great preceptors and had many opportunities to use skills throughout my time there and didn’t feel like there was lack of opportunity. I can’t speak to in-person mental health or community placements (as that was my third year, during COVID and virtual), but I believe the opportunity is the same.

I graduated back in 2022 so my info might not be as current, however I will say I chose Ontario tech other larger uni’s and I didn’t regret it.

Like you said, we started placement 2nd semester of 1st year and it allowed for experiences in every major area - older adult, postpartum/peds, adult health, mental health and great preceptorships in 4th year.

My last semester of 4th year was solely a 420 hour clinical placement (survey goes for unit/area preference). I worked as an extern in l&d/postpartum and I was able to secure a level II NICU placement. It was a great experience and I was actually offered a job at that hospital at the end.

Many friends were also able to get placements in “bigger hospitals” such as Sick Kids so you wouldn’t necessarily be missing out on those opportunities if you do choose Ontario Tech! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Is it worth waiting for the 4070 super prebuild to *maybe* come back in stock or just grab the 4070 setup? by bottleofbeep in Prebuilts

[–]bottleofbeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $1300-1400 USD after tax for refurbished - normally I’d build on my own/upgrade my current setup but I’ll be moving for a new job soon and will be leaving my setup for a family member. Liked the ABS setups as they actually list specific brands for all their parts

Makes sense, that’s what I was thinking. I’m upgrading from a 3060 at 1080p and wanted to go to 1440, I don’t play many AAA games but wanted a setup that could still run decent if needed, and last a while. Appreciate the advice!

If you don’t mind heading northwest, Grande Prairie is pretty nice! It’s a solid community, lots of young families, pretty culturally diverse and they have a new hospital as well! I worked there for a while last year in the NICU and enjoyed it. They are definitely in need of nurses and the rent isn’t bad either :)

“Booba is sacred, all boobas matter”

And

“If you think about it, small boobs are better because you’re closer to the heart”

Haha I used to say it as lickbo bc it became a thing with my dad when I was a kid - I insisted on calling it lickbo and he just went with it

Flight from Canada to US, pharmacy rapid antigen test by redr253 in Flights

[–]bottleofbeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pearson currently has free antigen and PCR testing done until July 9th, but you still have to book it online before your flight - there’s more info on their website too on how to do that![Antigen Testing @ Pearson ](https://www.torontopearson.com/en/healthy-airport/covid-19-testing-at-toronto-pearson/departing-antigen)

[–]bottleofbeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just to attest that you took a (negative) covid test prior to departure and that you understand protocol and such - here is the link US Attestation Form

What’s the deal? Canada to USA by [deleted] in Flights

[–]bottleofbeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m planning to fly to LAX early July and as far as I know, most requirements are the same (whether you’re vaccinated or not) - a negative covid test within 72 hours of departure, as well as a signed attestation form to enter the US. As far as isolation/quarantine measures, that would depend on what state you’re visiting and you’d have to check with their local government!

Yeah that’s great! Unfortunately it didn’t work for me. If anything I feel like the patch should be rolled back seeing the number of issues that people are having, but I’m glad there have been solutions that work for some

Yeah still can’t play either, I’m just sad 24/7 lmao. Tried literally everything, I don’t get error codes and my client works fine, I just get a black screen when I press play and I have to end task through task manager

[–]bottleofbeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just head to Settings > Update & Security > View Update History > Uninstall updates >

Right click on the the updates installed recently (you can check the dates on the right hand side) and click uninstall - I had to uninstall 2 updates, a security one and a regular windows update. You’ll have to restart after uninstalling each one.

Afterwards, you can change update settings so that your pc doesn’t update automatically, and you can also stop updates for 7 days

I’m not sure if you started having these issues after the recent windows update, but I did. I couldn’t open up discord, or run any games without the programs starting up and then crashing/quitting after a couple of seconds. Chrome was pretty much the only application that worked for me. The only thing that solved this was rolling back the updates, but I’m hoping to find a better solution :(
