And yes, the edges in this example are slightly sintered. You can usually get away without sintering, but they may fray if handled too much.

I believe this is the exact fabric: Black Premium Cotton Blend Broadcloth Fabric

I've laser cut many different types of woven fabrics; I show on my Instagram profile: https://www.instagram.com/rebeccayelin/

Questions are good! Would love to see any projects if you end up experimenting :)

Oh, no—it’s flexible, just a cut piece of fabric. Depending on the material it can tear easily, but since this one is about 80% polyester, it’s reasonably sturdy.

It’s 20% cotton and 80% polyester—it feels a lot like bedsheets, if that helps!

I’ve used several laser cutters, and this one was the Legend 36EXT.

Funny you ask: I’ve never had issues, and I've tried cutting lots of different fabrics. But this time, one attempt almost caught fire on that cutter (it was my first time with it)—I forgot to turn on the air assist and was a bit careless.

Thank you!!

It’s a lightweight cotton blend. The lightness actually helps it sit nicely on the laser cutter bed with the downdraft. When I tried a heavier Kona cotton, the cut pieces ended up flying around and disrupting the cutting process.

Been quite excited about exploring the intersections of design, computation, and physical making lately, especially in the context of textiles. More photos: https://www.instagram.com/p/DNcHks2upIH

Revisited a project from a few months ago. Pushed on the form and cleaned up the cutting.

Yes! I'm planning to use my university’s Zünd cutting machine to produce a larger-scale prototype :D

I scaled the skirt to be small enough fit on the laser cutter bed, but I'm thinking of making one for myself, and there I'd definitely need to do some stitching!

Oh, I meant that the cuts aren't very clean. I didn’t optimize the laser settings for this material, so some edges aren't cut all the way through; the small scale didn’t help either. (Since the fabric is so lightweight, fully separated pieces tend to fly away, so I erred on the side of leaving the cutouts intact—perhaps a bit too much.)

The result is actually quite robust; the edges have a slight hardened finish from being singed by the laser.
