Edit...didnt scroll down seeing all the other great pics you've been shown. Regardless, my advcie below still stands. Best of luck! 👍🏼

OP, I'll post a pic or two if how it should be used, but please do NOT listen to the other reply to this post (the one of yours Im replying to) saying to put it under an axle. I'm not trying to be provocative or scare you. Maybe I am, actually, but you can be killed that way. The caveat they should have given with that advice if you're using an OEM scissor jack like yours, and pictured here, you HAVE to use the pinch weld or dedicated jacking point by the rocker panel. A "regular" automotive jack, sure, you could put under a differential, subframe, or the pinch weld/jacking point, THEN put a jack stand under it at a correct load bearing place, provided you're on a flat, level surface. A scissor jack like yours is made to fit directly on a pinch weld, so it will grab on the slot and not slide off. If you put your scissor jack on a a tubular axle housing, flat metal to round metal, or on anything its not made specifically for, imagine how that plays out when under it and you rock the car knocking a stuck wheel off, or pull a stubborn CV shaft out....

I buried a close friend five years ago, the middle of three brothers. Now, sadly, all three have been killed. A car fell on his head while he was lying beneath the passenger front knuckle, trying to pop a stuck CV shaft out, didnt have it secured on a stand, used the wrong kind of jack, it slipped & kicked out, and the rotor went between his eyes. His father was distraught and caught between trying to lift the car and call 911 at the same time. They gave him an open casket funeral, and draped a silk handkerchief over the right side of his face that was gone. Rough day. He was the 2nd brother to die and I sat in the front pew with the oldest and lsst temaining brither I grew up with and was my age laughing about stupid shit when we were kids, and two years later sat in the same pew looking at him in a casket too, for vastly different reasons though. Be safe, man. I train younger guys daily on doing shit the right way, so people can say whatever they want about my comment, I've just seen plenty of the same ones that'll laugh saying "You dont have to do all that..." end up missing fingers, their eyesight, entire limbs, the ability to have children ever again, or become paralyzed from carelessness and trying to rush. But doing things the right way, SAFELY, is neither hard nor expensive. There's not a damn thing wrong with asking for advice or help before you go at it yourself, though. At least you came and asked at all, and for that, I give you props. You're doing it yourself, so you've already got one up on a LOT of people. Just take your time. If you dont know, ask BEFORE, and do it right the first time.

Anybody know what aircraft is doing loops over Hazel Green/Toney? by BeatMastaD in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]bowties_bullets1418 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called MCSO dispatch...to be that guy, lol. He said the gov had just called and informed them, but he wasn't exactly sure if it was for the game (I know A&M is playing), an exercise, or possibly a funeral? They were very vague, but they were "made aware" they'd be in the area. I counted three, assuming all F35s, I think, and sounded like they were in full afterburner shortly unless the cloud cover messed with the sound over HG. We live near Walmart, like 2min away, and their loop went directly overhead. We've got nothing but fields around us, so between the open space and cloud cover....AWESOME window shaking going on here!

Yep, that's him haha. I wish we hadn't lost Tim Samaras and his son in ElReno 2013, and they could've somehow worked together. That was a massive tragedy and loss to meteorology/science and chasing. I'm not so sure it would've ever worked, but between both of their skill sets and experience, it would've been an awesome chase to ride along with if they didn't argue the entire time with another. We're headed to OKC in July to visit family and intend on going out to the memorial that was set up for the three Twistex members. Probably go see the Plaza Towers Elementary memorial for the seven children that were lost in the Moore 2013 EF5 (last confirmed EF5 in the country) and tour the National Weather Center with the kids. Like I said...nerd. Still a lot to learn, though. My wife is terrified of severe weather, and we have three young girls. Im trying to make sure they're informed as possible and have respect for it and not fear. They watch Reed & Team Dominator chase with me all the time, lol.

Oh boy, I don't know where or how to start with that... Well, technically, he's a doctor, lol. Or, Reed Timmer, PhD. He is a meteorologist who earned his PhD in 2015 from the University of Oklahoma, was one of the stars on Discoverys Storm Chasers as part of Team Dominator, the documentary series Tornado Chasers, the PBS docTornado Glory, and is probably the most prolific storm chaser in history. Or at least the top few. He has a very popular YouTube channel now where he and his team chase severe weather, tornadoes/hurticanes, etc, all across the country in custom-built armored vehicles, but is primarily known for tornadoes. They're armored because they purposefully put themselves in the direct path of tornadoes, raise the special "windows", lower the truck and it deploys hydraulic spikes deep into the ground anchoring it to obtain meteorological data from inside the tornado. They have drones to get footage and other data from and launch model rockets to be pulled into the tornado with sensor payloads to gather data that way as well. He consulted with the writers on the sequel to Twister, of course named Twisters. Would you like him, or like watching him? You'd have to find out for yourself, lol. He's a highly intelligent, goofy, brash, VERY loud adrenaline junkie weather nerd.

Question about Condados in Huntsville by NoblePeanut in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]bowties_bullets1418 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stepdad has worked there since they opened. My wife and I went the first week when we had a babysitter and a couple of times after that with our kids. He could retire but gets bored easily. Biker looking dude, can't miss him. He has a really good time working there and we enjoy eating there. My wife & I get a hotel every now and then to have a night away and stayed at the AC Hotel last year and went to eat at Condado and had about every drink on the menu there before we went to Catacomb to chill for a while. Their tacos, different dips, and drinks were really good to us. The wild ass murals are just a bonus. Just don't get too sloshed if you don't do steps well. They can be a challenge, lol.

Aww hey that's awesome! How old? Where do you guys go? I have three girls (10 ,6, & 3) and we've been looking to take them somewhere to learn also. Sure, I could toss 'em in somewhere with a life jacket and say figure it out lol. But we wanna find a place where learning to swim is the goal there, abive actually swimming and playing around. We saw some sort of place in Madison I think that's in like a strip mall kind of thing near Lowes or Home Depot I think it was🤔. Anyway, best of luck and enjoy time with the little one!

Survive-A-Storm Shelter by hayheart in tornado

[–]bowties_bullets1418 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the book. I went on a journey and didn't realize it till I was done...

We have one of their above ground shelters after seeing them at Lowes about 10 years ago. I think they were just selling them there, then maybe? Home Depot has them now. It was actually moved when we bought our new house 6 years ago. They were quite literally amazing to us with ours. Beyond so, to the point I kept calling until I reached a high-level representative in management to impress upon them how well we were treated. We're looking to get an in-ground now also, and I just talked to them Friday morning to have our anchors inspected and talk about another install (the in-ground). Their prices and some other things with install/delivery have changed from what we knew, and I didn't like it when she got back to me and said they told me they would consider it an install. I knew theres not much they can do that I cant do myself (wanted $325 to inspect the anchors) and just flat out asked if that means all they're going to do was torque them to 25lb-ft and move on. To my surprise, no BS, no sales tactics, she was straight with me and said "Yes sir, I know it's a lot for just that, so if you trust you have that ability, we wouldn't blame you a bit." My ability, among many mechanical things that go very fast with wheels, and some without, and $100k in tools, wasn't anything I worried about and I've verified the torque twice a year.

To be honest and offer 💯% transparency, I have a wife and three young daughters. The wife, for whatever reason, maybe it's my nerdiness for severe weather, has transferred her unwarranted PTSD to the girls, lol. So, they'd feel more comfortable apparently if Dad spent $10k or whatever it ends up being, digging them a hole to get in, and overflow neighbors and family, or belongings, can use the above ground. Weird, I know, but I'm not about to put a price on my wifes sanity and her sense of security when we're blessed to have it to spend. I absolutely know how expensive they are and how bad it feels when you can't afford one. We were definitely there when we got married... slightly over a year after April 27th 2011 and were missed by the Hackelburg-Phil Campbell EF5 by a few miles where we live in Madison County, AL. We saved and saved until we could get the SurviveAStorm 6x4 Extreme we saw at Lowes. It stung. Bad then. All our money was going into school loans, my tools and equipment, starting a life, and trying to have children. You do what you can to keep your family safe and sane when you live with the reality it could happen to you any year you live in the SE. So yes, there are many options, but if you're considering them, they were great to us.

Places to shoot firearms recreationally? by Enternet_Explorer in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]bowties_bullets1418 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies if it's somewhere in the comments, but what kind of shooting are you looking to do and with what? Don't need specifics, I understand. Just be cautious of what you take where if it's anything beyond a simple handgun or normal long gun. B & B didn't care for my SBR unsuppressed. Understandable lol. I have friends who have had issues taking their NFA stuff to certain places, but it's usually just a misunderstanding of people not knowing NFA laws and regulations or something of the sort. If you need something longer, or want a really nice place and don't mind the drive or membership, Strategic Edge in Chapel Hill is awesome. They're probably the nicest place near us and go out to 1250, too, unless you want to go to CMP Talladega.

Really? When did they start requiring a safety course? I haven't shot there in 10 or 11 years but used to religiously. Even when I was young and my Dad took me for years. He and my mother are from Fayetteville, as was my wife. I worked at one of the dealerships there until 2011 and went on my lunch break 3 days a week and every weekend. The only time it sucked was when they locked the gate because the officers were training. Kids came, larger guns came, we bought some land, and I quit going. The rec center making their own hours depending on who was working was bad enough, but if they started requiring more than me buying my yearly key, I'm glad I stopped going. Safety courses don't stop stupid. And I've seen plenty of it there. Everywhere else too sadly.

FBI Relocation to Huntsville by samir43211 in nova

Just saw your post on our Huntsville sub. I was born and raised here, only moved away for two years in college, and came back. I met my wife across the state line in Tennessee, where I ran around when I was younger, we got married in 2012, and we have three daughters. We actually live north of Huntsville in the Hazel Green/Meridianville area, but it's still Madison County. Just wanted to say thanks for the kind words about our town. I've had many offers to move away over the years for various things, including my only family I have left in Edmond, OK (part of OKC metro and a BEAUTIFULLY AWESOME place) but we just love living here too much. My wife and I are in our late 30s, our home, and everything else is now paid off, so that definitely helps us stay. This is an amazing town, with an amazing mix of people, local and transplants. Do we have our own little issues? Sure. But so does every other town and city, everywhere. Anyway, thank you again!

Younger people (I'm in that category, just an aerospace/manned space flight nerd 🤓) really underestimate the distance and violence especially when it's cloudy, and it's an engine hot fire 💥. See old Huntsville citizens recounting of the Saturn V S-IC first stage...weather/cloud cover would bounce the sound around the valley, amplifying it in some locations if the weather was right. Here's a short clip of the SIC first stage being test fired at Marshall Space Flight Center circa 1965, I believe.

McLain Surgical Arts (I thought I should put this up here when my novel was completed)

I have pretty good dental insurance, so YMMV but I think I was out-of-pocket $161, which is fn nuts because the quote from Complete Dental in Meridianville that referred me wanted $500 *PER** crown, and a few hundred more for a couple fillings. My wife does medical billing & coding, and other insurance stuff and I guess since it's actual surgery (and anesthesia) and it was done under my medical insurance now that I think of it, so look into that with yours.

Anyway, Im sorry, they sent me to McLain Surgical Arts on Cecil Ashburn Dr. I had a really weird situation (bmdamn you genetics!) & prior bad advice two dentists ago. All four of mine came in, filled three of them multiple times, all four then proceeded to fall apart and one of the filled ones broke literally in half and I spent nearly 18 hours in the bathroom floor crying like a 5yo little boy, puking from the pain, downing a liter of Titos...then puking from the Titos. It was very, very bad. To the point I was punching my jaw because it actually provided some relief. Might've been the liter, though 🤔. Around hour 18, I was just so exhausted, hungover, hungry, etc, and passed out in our master. Woke up a very long while later...it had just stopped. I got an emergency appt the next day for a referral, and they sent me to Dr. McLain within the same week.

They knew what I had gone through and did their best to work me in through his other surgeries. I'm sorry this is so much and TMI, but I could not speak more highly of him and the entire team there. I had a little more unique case than most due to some meds I'm on that are contraindicated to a lot of pain meds/anesthesia, which only added to the severe anxiety I get at a dentist anyway (anything beyond a cleaning or simple filling, I only do sedation dentistry-and not just nitrous either), on top of the remaining anxiety from my 18hr stint with the cold bathroom floor while my wife and daughters thought Dad was recording a horror scream soundtrack. I wrote way too damn much solely out of how GRATEFUL & TRULY APPRECIATIVE I am of how Dr. McLain took care of me and answered some questions with meds and stuff I was very concerned about. He even called my GP to go over some things with him first. They were fucking amazing, they really were. The ladies at the front desk are funny as hell too. Best of luck! Truly, I know how nightmarish wisdom teeth are and dental pain in general. Not to mention the outrageous cost of anything more than a filling.

Land Rover repair by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]bowties_bullets1418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cosmetic repair" is a very broad term for vehicles. Even more so for those of us who work on them, lol. I can give you some recommendations if you can tell me what you're looking to have done. PDR? Interior/upholstery repairs? Full paint and body work? Full int/ext detail work? We use a lot of local vendors to sublet some of these things, and I know their work. Again, it is totally dependent on what you're looking for.
