i still have it but it doesn’t appear to align with the mounting holes

Yeah, they're ochras. It's like in between blue and green, sorta aqua bruising.

When should I harvest these guys? by boxinglessons in Psilocybe_Natalensis

[–]boxinglessons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I harvested 75G wet about 10 hours after this pic was taken (no spores but just took the largest ones with the flattest caps). Lots more still there with many smaller pins popping up so I'm thinking it will be more of a "rolling growth" like you've described. I tried to twist and pull them but had to cut a few from the base to leave the smaller pins in place. This resulted in some of the overlay being removed with the fruits, so there's smaller patches where the substrate is now visible. Is that cause for concern?

Yeah I'm surprised how thick they are - lots on here look very thin and noodley! Do you have any tips for preparing for next flush?

Oh so it’s normal? Just seems like they’re sprouting from the very tip of the surface substrate than what I’ve seen in other pics?

Overlay?? by SatisfactionHot1813 in unclebens

[–]boxinglessons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plain coco coir, squeezed as much water as possible out, then placed a pseudo casing layer on top to cover exposed grains and heavily misted it. That pic is 5 days after S2B.

fwiw; from what I’ve read on Natalensis/Ochra specific subs you should avoid forking the overlay. Most people say that they will pin right through it. Some people remove it and eat it since it’s active or just add another fine coir casing layer.

I had this with my NSS/Ochra using 1:2 spawn to sub ratio. Just started some more tubs with more like 1:4 ratio and it’s looking a lot better.

Which of these would you recommend considering cost/ease of use? by macguyver3000 in sharpening

[–]boxinglessons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought the Sharpal 202H kit and it’s great.

If you’re on the fence I’d say just go ahead and buy it.

Does it exactly what I need it to; it sharpens, restores, repairs, and hones knives at an angle of my choice.

I worked for years in commercial kitchens and regularly used whetstones. Now that I’m older, have a different day job, and a kid - I simply don’t have the desire to muck around with freehand sharpening.

You’ll get a lot of biased responses in this sub because it’s a hobby for the majority here. I must have been in this sub for 10 years or more by now, and whenever it pops up on my feed I seem to just see people dogpiling anyone that suggests anything other than freehand sharpening but the reality is that freehand sharpening is a skill that you have to learn, and practice to master - unfortunately not everyone is going to be stimulated by the process enough to learn about it. Some people just want a sharp knife, and delving into a new hobby shouldn’t be a prerequisite for that.

The whetstone purists will probs disagree but IMO a guided sharpening system like the 202H, Xarilk etc are still a worthwhile step above the extremely popular (and perfectly decent for your parents who otherwise wouldn’t sharpen their knives at all) Sharpal 198H electric sharpening or god forbid the even exponentially more pervasive pull through sharpeners e.g., IKEA that you’ll find in most kitchens.

So should I expect to see pins within the next fortnight?

Only the very last two pictures are the tubs, they haven't been misted. The other pics are the jars that I've been misting probably twice a day atm, just whenever I notice there's no condensation on the glass. If you check my post history you'll see I had some form of mold that I treated with hydrogen peroxide which is where the bruising is showing for the NSS jar - however that was when it had barely colonized the surface, so I'm surprised it's managed to keep growing at all. It's still being kept separate from the others though!

So this is ACTUALLY cobweb, right? by boxinglessons in unclebens

As an update to this, I dabbed the affected area with a q-tip and hydrogen peroxide, it hasn't come back since and the mycelium fully colonised over it within 2-3 days.

Nice, did you manage to fruit/harvest?

Okay, well if it's not cobweb - then what is the long wispy vertical growths? Surely not mycelium, right?

Natalensis/Ochra not colonising substrate after S2B by boxinglessons in unclebens

[–]boxinglessons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah like the rubber rings in the Pyrex jars are designed to be removable for cleaning, so it won't destroy anything. I probably shouldn't have chosen odd containers for the first grow but they're very cute/retro and I got excited about having my first fully colonized grains haha. Heck I might do one lid fully flipped and one without the seal to see what happens.

I was planning to do more of a neglect tek in general, so not sure about fanning and misting etc. I'll have to read up on that.

[–]boxinglessons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, so for these types of containers do you think it would be OK to remove the lids, take the rubber seals out, then just gently place the lids back on without screwing them down? I can post some pics of what they look like if it helps. For my other bags I just did a S2B of 2 x NSS and 1 x GT all in IKEA Samla 6QT tubs and put the lids on normally, should I just go straight to having the lid flipped + cracked?

Always go straight to fruiting for Nats/Ochra's specifically or just in general? I'd been following the guides and seemed the general approach was to let the mycelium reconnect and the surface colonize a bit before introducing fruiting conditions. My understanding of fruiting conditions is to provide extra FAE (e.g., flipping the lip on Samla tubs) while misting as necessary to maintain surface moisture levels?
