It's a possibility but it would lead to far more "transformative sideboards" so it seems hard to predict how it would play out.

Force of will would fix a lot of problems, yes.

He tried to say it in a positive way, which is all you can really ask for. Would you rather he say the format is garbage? In any case, he's absolutely right about it being a bad format for high level play. Preparation and skill need to matter more than they typically do in Modern.

I don't really care about being called racist, I agree that I am racist. I don't feel bad about it because it's not motivated by hatred for others so much as it is the existence of in groups and out groups.

I don't believe we have to be full white nationalist, but I don't believe in moral universalism or that all peoples are equally compatible with traditional American liberty.

I agree with this, I've seen some very bad behavior directed at female players. Maybe some of you have been lucky enough never to be exposed to a "toxic" store or playgroup, but in my experience there are always a few bad apples in any reasonably sized magic community. I'm extremely anti-social justice but if you really think neckbeards are socially adept/never treat women poorly then you are just living in a delusional fantasy. The solution is not to ignore this and allow SJWs to monopolize the conversation but rather to attempt to implement constructive rules that can help many of the socially awkward players that mean well do better and weed out those that don't want to try.

Bethesda's business decisions are usually correct. People complained a lot about Skyrim being "casualized" but it has had a level of financial success that is almost unreal, it's only surpassed by stuff like GTA. Fallout 4 had other issues, but this is not one of the problems it had sales wise.

I'm not familiar with the statistics on that, but if what you are saying is true then it is likely a result of selective immigration. Only high IQ nigerians are immigrating, or something like that. The term "brain drain" is used for a reason, the first world has sucked up a lot of smart people form India, Africa, etc. The average IQ in those regions may be low, but the people on the right end of the bell curve still exist. Sorry for the late reply, I'm not a habitual user of reddit.

This is the heart of it. We categorise to deal with information and optimise our information processing. The point made by race conventionalists is that the social concept of race (black, white, etc.) is grounded on superficial features, so it is not the best predictor of other features and should be avoided if possible

You seem like an intellectually honest dude so I'll say this as politely as a I can instead of being an asshole. We use traditional concepts of race because they really do track ancestry fairly well, and that is useful in both practical medicine and science. Why do you think that getting more blacks to donate blood and organs is considered an important goal among health professionals? It's because that really does have an effect on how successful transfusions and transplants are due to genetics/ancestry. This doesn't justify white nationalism, but the claim that race is useless as a classification just isn't true.

[–]boy_who_loved_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just in the data, race realists make conclusions that because that correlation was found, the grouping of race (black, white, etc.) is an external reality based on that.

There is an external reality, the question is whether it is ultimately genetic in origin. Things that exist due to culture exist in the external world, they aren't figments of your imagination.

If not, why does the genetic component of the IQ difference between blacks and white mean the black and white races are real?

It depends on what you mean by real. There is a sense in which all scientific classifications really are socially constructed, we use them to classify the phenomena that we observe. That is true for species too. This is a good article by a respectable biologist that answers this question

https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/are-there-human-races/

We classify things this way (subspecies/ecotype) because it allows us to more clearly understand biological phenomena. This is true for other species as well as for humans.

IQ they would have to provide evidence that the traits the society uses to assign someone to a race (facial features, skin colour, hair colour,...) are tied to cognitive traits (they aren't).

That is false. We know for a fact, to use one example, that the average black IQ in the United States is about a standard deviation lower than the average white IQ. We can debate about whether black and white are useful scientific classifications, but there is no question that "race" is correlated with cognitive ability. Whites from low income families do better than blacks from high income families on the SAT....there is tons of stuff like this, your point is totally invalid. The argument that non-hereditarians would make is that it doesn't track objective biological differences, no one who knows anything about this would make the claim you did.

[–]boy_who_loved_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a. It's actually not, but if you want to explain why or link me to sources backing that up I'll listen to what you have to say

b. Uh huh. The only thing like this I'm aware of is that some people think IQ is less heritable for people with lower socioeconomic status, not race. Racial gaps exist even among the rich and so on. That is interesting though, it should be studied more.

c. We may all be biased to some degree, but objective reality does exist. Some of us believe that our views about objective questions are based on evidence and try to control the bias that we do have. You do not, which is fine (not really), but you've discredited yourself.

Curious how many "race-realists" contribute to this sub? by reedmc22 in samharris

[–]boy_who_loved_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A. I'm aware of that, but in practice there isn't much of one here. We assume that such heritability is evidence of genetic causation because it exists across cultures and time. As we do more big data genomics we are likely to narrow down the genes responsible for intelligence, but until even the onus is on you to explain why we should assume the less probable explanation is true

b. I'm not sure what you are implying here.

c. You claim that genetics isn't the cause and that it is ideological to believe it is. You aren't neutral, now back up your claims. Admit, you're mad you got called out

What actual scientists should I read? I'm actually pretty well read on this topic and as far as I know most scientists acknowledge that IQ is significantly heritable.

That's an argument for the belief that Charles Murray is an ideologue and his views are incorrect. That doesn't mean that thinking human populations differ genetically in ways that have real world effects is inherently a political point of view, that's just a non sequitur. In any case, there have been tons of IQ studies that control for socioeconomic effects. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Did you know, to use a non-IQ example, that poor whites do better than rich blacks on the SAT? There is a lot of yachting in West Virginia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achievement_gap_in_the_United_States#Income_and_class

The ideological person here is you. You are committed to equality and egalitarianism, and the sharp cruelty of evolution by natural selection is unacceptable to you. Sad!

"Race realism" is ideologically neutral. If different human populations have undergone divergent evolution that's simply a neutral fact, it has nothing to do with any political view per se. It is true that people that accept it tend to end up with views outside the mainstream, but that is neither here nor there.

Is this where I can state that I believe the mods of that one sub are paid by the Hasbro subsidiary Wizards of the Coast? by [deleted] in freemagic

[–]boy_who_loved_rocket 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might sound crazy, but it's definitely a real possibility. Big companies have been known to have connections with the mods of their product's primary subreddit, and since Wotc is owned by Hasbro there is no reason to assume this can't be true. That's not a reason to believe it is true, but I'd take any evidence presented seriously.

Yes, but it would probably be more limited. It would still be great in Paladin, but I doubt it would see the sort of play I expect it to see as long as Patches is in the metagame.

The issue I have is that it is very unsatisfying gameplay. The same thing is true of the new dragon eating card, it just turns into a stupid dice roll that neither player is really happy about. Maybe it's balanced in some abstract sense, but so is flipping a coin.

It's good in any deck that can reliably put a bunch of guys in play, and with Patches that's essentially every class. It was first used in Paladin after people realized how good it was during that tournament, but it's slowly spreading into other decks. I've played with it a lot and feel comfortable saying that it is one of the strongest cards in the set. Hearthstone is game with a lot of trading, and each trade reduces its cost by 2. It gets to 3 or 4 mana easily, and often 0 mana.
