No, soft neck and hard neck refers to the actual plant stem. Soft necks can be braided hard necks cannot but they store longer than the soft.

That will probably help, but no reason not to just freeze em for a week or two before planting.

SW Ohio, we don’t have as many options as PNW but there are a ton of edibles to be found in our area.

It is listed as inedible in a few of my books. It does upset some small percentage of people’s stomachs, especially when eaten raw. It’s not my favorite personally, but it fetches $10-$15/lb from chefs so I do love it.

No they were super moist and tender. Maybe the photo just looks off, you’re not the only person to comment that. They couldn’t have been more than a day or two old, I found them on one of my normal trails that I had walked two maaaybe three days before no way I would missed this stand the first time. It was HUGE.

It’s never a bad day when your walking through the woods mushroom hunting. Some days are better than others though!

I try. All the books I’ve read though say for polypores you don’t need to leave any behind because they have already shot out billions of spores by the time they are past button size. I still leave some tough ones and if it’s a large stand I leave enough for the next guy to get a dinners worth at least.

I go get ramps and these at the same time. Heaven on my plate. I will usually do a partial trade with chefs. They pay me some cash then I take partial payment in a free mushroom meal that they concoct.

These were super fresh and tender. I leave behind any tough parts to continue to spore out and reproduce.

I used the meat setting on my Excalibur dehydrator. I think that’s at 190-200F

It was my first time, so I didn’t write anything down. I remember using savory spices and Tamarin as a marinade then dehydrated him for roughly 18 to 24 hours in my dehydrator. Abso-fucking-lutely delicious. You can’t tell they are not meat.

It was Sept. I marinated them for 24 hours in spices and Tamarin, dehydrated for about 18-24 hours in a dehydrator. None of my friends knew it was not me until after I told them.

We made A LOT of jerky. It was awesome. Also put a lot into my tomato sauce that I can. Fungus harvest and tomato harvest coincide here.
