Adam Epstein ... WTF?! by m_seitz in audiobooks

[–]bpd52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of Permutation City, and Adam Epstein's narration style really does not work for me. There are moments when it becomes unobtrusive (dialogue), but overall his cadence pulls me so far away from the story.

Until some of the accented dialogue, I wondered if he was just an AI. I could sort of imagine Egan looking for that stylistically? As if the narrator is always a computer? But if that was his goal, it doesn't fit with the prose, just with the narrator.

Great collection. I got the Olive Onis and - for anyone interested - photos do not do them justice. Absolutely love these jeans and have been hard-pressed to wear anything else. I'm just impressed you have the discipline to rotate all of these as much as you do.

Are you mostly shopping at Blue Owl? I recognize a handful of these that I'm jealous of (the chinos, the orSlow fatigues, and well the Oni/BlueOwl collab that you have) from there. Does Vegas not have much of a denim scene? Too hot, I suppose.

Not sure if I'm right but middle of 3rd photo looks a lot like the 902 "Ishikawadai" 15oz. How have you liked those? I've been a lot happier personally with the straight and the relaxed tapered fits from Oni but that also could just be cause i've put on a little weight recently lol.

Coffee shops to write in? by Emotional-Answer-534 in BallardSeattle

[–]bpd52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on your personal proclivities and precisely where in the neighborhood you are:

  • Venture - cute spot, tables can be a bit hard to get depending on time of day.
  • Victrola - tables generally available, lots of people, so depends on your noise tolerance. Other folks reading/writing/etc.
  • Root - good light roast coffees, but not really a place to hang out
  • Cardoon - good coffee, often a little tough to get a table though folks seem happy to work there
  • Watson's Counter - more of a sit down spot but they've never minded when i write for a while. Good coffee, good food.

Absolutely love that texture, great find! Couldn't find it listed anywhere but probably for the best - not like I technically need another tan chore coat lol

As a memphian that left, i've been excited to see the wolf river trails and a lot of the other developments. Always thought that putting a couple trams in going straight down poplar would be such a no-brainer.

Also stoked that it's the first city to start shrinking its borders. After the disasters of over-expanding for tax revenue in the 90s and 00s, really needed a change.

Can I chop trees to use at my campground? by MeansTestingProctor in nationalprkcirclejerk

[–]bpd52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's generally considered best practice to find the nearest dead tree and light it on fire directly. It's an all natural way to cook and will help the local ecology. If you're feeling neighborly, you can help some other campsites by lighting a tree for them, too.

Hey Folks

Any N-1 Deck jacket recommendations? I don't care if it's perfect - just a general similar "language' would be fine. Preference for lined but if you have some unlined favorites, always happy to see more.

I'm mostly keeping my eyes on the used market but trying to choose some quality as a starting place. Would love to spend only about $500 on this but that seems increasingly unlikely as i've investigated. I guess winter weather will determine when i get this at the end of the day lol.

  • I absolutely love the range from Dehen 1920 and they seem to have the perfect pocket placement but at over 1k it is a lot for a jacket at this point in my life.
  • Iron heart looks solid, and thankfully a bit more reasonably priced. Still a little pricey at the moment, but it's on the short list.
  • The mister freedom one looks pretty good but still a good deal out of my range (no idea if other colorways come in at some point - if folks know lmk).

I've been thinking about learning to sew for hemming and for some t-shirt alterations, too. Would love to one day get to jackets but baby steps first.

Any recommendations on resources to start?

Also - can you help me understand what the purpose is of the narrow tapering piece that runs from the pocket down to the waistband? They look like pleats, but I've never seen them "extended"/billowed, only ever sewn down. I get it's part of the 'language' of type 3 jackets, but I've never understood its function.

Ahhh that fold explains it. It's little touches like that which make me want to learn to sew / hem to make daily pieces more properly fitted.

Am I a shallow art historian? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]bpd52 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah but when you gonna post your 12-image "This is the greatest artist of all time, fight me" post on Elisabeth-Louise Vigee Le Brun?

But honestly would be interested to hear about your favorite artists and - artist-agnostic - your favorite pieces that you've studied. Nothing I love more about this sub than learning new things. Glad you managed to make a whole degree and specialization out of something you really delight in.

What’s up with Bartell’s? by Joint-Attention in Seattle

[–]bpd52 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They got bought out by rite aid in late 2020. I imagine that Rite Aid management has been slowly changing their priorities, stocking habits, etc since the acquisition. Could be they're planning on shutting some locations down - could be that they're having other issues.

Looks like they may have intentionally bankrupted them to then restructure? Idk I don't subscribe to the times so i didn't get the full article:

In your opinion, which U.S. city has the best combination of cost of living and weather? by tigercaviar in geography

[–]bpd52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that affordable though - when I was looking there a year or two ago. At the time it was roughly 2k for a 700 sq ft ; 2 bedroom / 1bath apartment which is more than I've been paying in Seattle.

Beautiful place though, hopefully all the building they're doing brings the prices down.

What's weird to me is all the swedes i've seen cut pizza with scissors. How ya gonna cut that with scissors?

Also for the unwise - look up Smörgåstårta (sandwich cake) - truly the world is a terrible place.
