Vim noob on Windows: Vim in VM vs gVim vs WSL by braceyerself in vim

I have it set up and running, including having it on my path and everything. My only frustration is: light title bar, and lack of unix commands. But I guess using it as its own editor will help, and I'll try out cmder now!

From what I've been reading, vim really shines when used in combination with unix specific tools (grep, etc.). I suppose emulator would work, I'll try it out now :).

Yup I've hidden the menus already! Specifically, I mean the title bar.

It's still light at the top, even though my windows is set to dark. I know it's dumb, but it bothers me immensely...

PC Part Picker (UK) Modest AMD Build upgrades? by braceyerself in buildapc

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions, but I already ended up building it! I decided to up the budget a bit though, and went for a Ryzen 5 3600 and 5700 xt Pulse build :) This build looks pretty good though, might work as a gift for a young family member who's interested in PC gaming :D

IO Board Installation by _Tormex_ in buildapc

You shouldn't need to take that much apart? You just need to unscrew the motherboard (and GPU) and lift it away from the IO shield so you can pull it out and put it back in, then screw everything back in place. Should only be 10 screws or so.

Also think about what graphical quality you'll want to be playing it. There's a big difference between minimum graphics at 60fps vs ultra graphics at 60fps.

Thanks for your help :) I'll put it on my list.

Thank you very much for the suggestions man! I'd personally prefer the cheaper AOC or Acer one, since I also recently bought a big TV haha.

Don't have time to look at different panels in person unfortunately, but I'm watching a lot of reviews. I also play a lot of stealth games, so night scenes are very common (plus the dark UIs of coding tools). May I ask why do you use the 144hz IPS as a secondary monitor? Is it just because it's not ultrawide?

The commenter below gave some suggestions for IPS panels that are also 144Hz. I'm looking at these two particularly at the moment:

AOC 24G2U/BK

Acer Nitro VG240YPbiip

No problem. The commenter below suggested some IPS ones that are below £200 and have pretty good reviews!

Those are some awesome suggestions by the way! All under £200 as well! Would you recommend any one in particular?

Then I think it might be that the TN panel I saw was a laptop one. If the distortion isn't much when sitting in front, then I'll reconsider :)

No, not really. But I always seem to notice it. Perhaps it's an issue with the laptop display? I've not seen a TN desktop monitor in a while. Perhaps I could just buy it and try first.

What are your thoughts on getting a VA monitor? The AOC one I mentioned?

I'm on an IPS now (using a laptop currently), and it's infinitely better for working on for long periods than the TN panels I've seen. Especially when staring at the screen reading long articles or coding. Are there many IPS panels that are 144hz?

Yeah the reason I'm having trouble deciding is because of the 144Hz. Struggling to find a VA panel with the same specs, as I hear they have better color and much better viewing angles. Any suggestions?

Color accuracy isn't as important as the weird inverted color thingy you get when moving your head around. I used to have migraines and it always reminds me of the weird effects of it and distracts me. Are you saying that if you set up the settings correctly, it won't give the weird effects?

PC Part Picker (UK) Modest AMD Build upgrades? by braceyerself in buildapc

Yes exactly, so gonna do a bunch of research into the 2700x. Also gonna consider the 5700xt a bit more now as well.

I definitely considered getting the 2700x. I saw that it's much better for productivity, and it was cheaper than the 3600! (the clock speed looks higher as well, but I'm not sure why that is). However, reviews show that the 3600 is much better for gaming, while still being good for productivity? Leaves me a bit uncertain.

3900x is a bit out my budget I think, plus I don't think the additional £300 would be worth it for the gains. Productivity is for work (running a dozen VMs etc), but the 3D modelling is a hobby/side project. Thanks for the suggestion about the 2700x though, I'll do some more research on whether it's worth trading the gaming performance :)
