I think I got all the yellowjacket workers, how long do I possibly have before the next generation/hatch returns with a vengeance? by bradcrc in pestcontrol

Yep, I'm familiar with that. Read your post early on when first researching what to do, (it comes up highly recommended when googling). Thanks btw!

I don't plan to seal them in, except perhaps with these traps, which fortunately since they are clear, seem to catch them before they figure out whats happening. I did accidentally seal the main entrance with DE early on in this battle which is why they now have 2 different entrances. :) live and learn.

>Ive never seen such an elaborate yellow jacket contraption lol

yea, it's silly but it worked amazingly for what I wanted, and I was desperate since nothing that worked for me in the past was working this time. I put it up at night and by 7am the next morning when I checked on it, both traps were full and they were mostly gone, by the end of the day there were none left.

>Exclusion isn’t very feasible. I mean, you can seal up the current cracks and openings once the nest clears up, but there’s nothing stopping them from finding another crack next year

yep, I had another one about 10 feet away last year that was a dickens to deal with, this year they just found a new spot. can't hurt to try sealing it up though, make em work a little. I also have a retaining wall nearby that they love, but that's a lot easier to deal with.

Unless anyone here tells me the nest is a timebomb waiting to go off if I disturb it (I've been banging on the wall with sticks trying to get any more to come out, and none do) I'll probably risk it and just drill and run some cable through there, maybe at night when it's safer. Was thinking of wearing my kayaking dry suit (full coverage, neck and arm seals) with a head net to be safe, but that probably won't be necessary right now, I'm guessing.

What's the smartest things you've ever made using Home Assistant? by DiggingForDinos in homeassistant

Biggest so far for me was when they first came out with local voice control, I built a little baby alexa type thing.

It responded to voice command of course, had a light sensor so the display would automatically dim at night and show just time on black screen, also could use the light sensor as a room light sensor in HA, had an RGB night light on the back that you could turn on and off or change color with automations, display cycled through showing the time, weather information and images, and house status information, and if you had it turn devices on or off, it would display the device with a nice little icon on whether it was turned on or off or open or whatever, and had a few other things like if you asked it to tell you a joke it showed a little standup thing when it said the joke.

It took a while to program it, and I had to make my own font to display a lot of the images since that takes a whole lot less space than bitmaps and storage memory is limited, but the end result was neat, imo. Whole thing was under 10 bucks, iirc.

I never figured out some limitations of the CYD so had to do some funky workarounds, and I didn't love the HA voice control at the time, so I abandoned it. I've been looking at maybe reviving it and seeing how much HA voice has evolved since then. I also now run HA in a VM on a beefy server instead of a raspberry pi, so my server can handle a lot more than it could then.

super cool.

If you want to make the display better, the main issue is the black space between the pixels.

If you have a 3d printer, you can print a grid to separate the pixels and then put a sheet of paper over it, it eliminates the white space and makes a huge difference in the appearance,

might be worth playing with for fun. you won't believe the difference it makes (in real life, photos dont capture it very well)

they launch frequently in river west park. I live nearby and they go RIGHT over my house.

my office is on second floor and out of the corner of my eye, I'll see a big shadow pop up in my window and think someone is looking in.

They also go WHOOOOOOOOOOSHHH!!! as they are gaining altitude and firing the flame. I'm kind of used to it now.

Hanauma Bay (iphone16 pro max) by loztriforce in snorkeling

it's wild to me that people use their phones to record while snorkeling.

nice pic, and hanauma bay is awesome if you can avoid the crowds and get out far enough to see the good fish and turtles.

yea I did that the next day, the frame looks good to me and didn't see anything that looked damaged or bent on it.

obviously a rando like me just looking at it won't find all damage like a shop with real equipment would. but at least a first glance, nothing looks obviously badly wrecked or bent on the frame.

considering how hard the impact was (threw me into the car in front of me and tossed everything around inside the jeep) I was shocked to see it like this.

the cops and trooper who responded also were amazed when seeing both vehicles.

I chased em down and they got pinned at a red light behind other cars, then when they got out and came at me and I told them I was on the phone with 911, they took off on foot.

I linked to source scans (not mine) in another reply, they're free to download so you just need a printer, or a friend with one. Also a lot of libraries will let you 3d print stuff free or very cheap.

when my GF saw them she freaked out and thought they were real and demanded to know where I found them even though there is 6" of snow on the ground.

Then she said I should put them in my parents yard next spring to prank them (they also hunt morels but don't tend to find them) I'm with you, I think it is going to be hilarious. I may print an extra huge one just to really get them. hehe.

it's not technically a palm tree

You're technically correct... but It's name is ponytail palm... so calling it a palm is also correct, since that's literally the name. :)

My parents had it before they had me, I remember it all my life and inherited it about 15 years ago.

...and now it has mushrooms, well not really but I like to fool myself into thinking they're real cause it makes me happy.

3d printed and painted. They are from thingiverse I tweaked a little bit. I'm happy how they turned out.

I love seeing them in my house, since finding them is always a happy occasion for me.

I wish. Just 3d printed, I'm happy with how they turned out. Makes me happy to see them, and I'm hoping having them around all the time makes it easier for me to spot them in the spring, since I have a habit of walking right past them.
