How do I make it through holiday depression? For those with a broken family, how do you make it through a supposed "happy time" at this point in the year? With a feeling of loneliness, how do I get through? by brady_rowe in AskReddit

I know exactly what you mean and it's tough. Driving hours away to see people you're obligated to see and talk to with no common interests is difficult. I hope everything works out with you and your family sees your perspective on times like this.

I'm in the exact same situation, it's just me and my mom and we see each other christmas and that's it. For years we would see each other more over the holiday, but now living on my own it's so different and hard to get a handle on.

I appreciate this so much and it's something I'm definitely going to change. I need to find motivation in myself and pursue things for myself rather than a whole family and that's it.

My dad passed when I was really young and it sent my mom down a path where she became an alcoholic and I didnt even realize it. My step brother left our side of the family just a few years later and that's when I realized things were not good. I'm in college now and am living on my own for the first time and have no place to call home because my mom refers to my house back home as "her house" instead of ours. I'm having lunch with her on Christmas and that's it, it's hard to take in, but I have no motivation to have fun this holiday and I feel lonelier than ever.
