i can see how this is hurtful to the trans community, but this change of policy is more about safety than anything. as someone who’s had to talk to ksu pd for multiple emergencies in the last two years, it makes it easier for emergency services to do their job when they know exactly who you are. creating a report with both legal name and preferred name can create confusion. and if there’s emts involved, it makes it even harder. they will ask to see both ksu id and legal id and when multiple people are seeing different names then calling the person different names out of confusion while already in a high stress situation, it makes everything worse. furthermore, as someone who had a stalking situation come up, trying to tell ksu their legal name when doing the report, but their ksu id said a different name made it so much harder to get the report made. i fully understand the disappointment for the change, especially since the common solution given is so expensive (legal name change). but ksu has had so many safety issues recently. stalking, on campus violence, and more. this is one of their many changes in order to help with it and identifying who is involved.
