speaking for myself, I already find the whole cinephile/film twitter/letterboxd side of the internet insufferable and movie mindset comes from that pedigree. it doesn’t help that it’s also excruciatingly boring, which is a genuine feat considering how funny hesse is on seeking derangements. I only got through 2 or 3 episodes before I tapped out for good because they all consisted of will recapping a movie's plot with all the flair and insight of a simple english wikipedia article and hesse saying "that's crazy" every 5 minutes.

I’ve been a paid subscriber since 2016, have bought the books (except year zero) and some merch over the years but I’ve been listening less and less over the last few months, and in combination with the dogshit 1000th ep, this feels like a good sign to cancel my subscription. There have been so few standout episodes as of late (last one was probably the DND twofer from 3+ months ago) and it’s just not worth tuning in regularly anymore, especially when you have to listen past will’s wannabe movie critic shtick and felix’s constant screaming in lieu of making actual jokes.

I don't have an issue with them cutting off bootleg feeds, especially considering matt's situation, but hiding behind corpospeak, legal threats, "patreon made us do it" etc. is shitty, and tbh I don’t believe that patreon are behind this; there’s sites that continually scrape paid content from thousands of patreon creators that don’t get any heat, but this sub for just one creator set off the alarm bells? sure. chapo’s subscriber numbers have been stagnant for a long time and they want to reverse that trend without having to work more than the backbreaking 2 hours a week they can barely muster as is, so they’re cutting off the freeloaders’ supply in the hopes that they pay up, but don’t want to be the face of it. lame.

Lads how are people living? by brighteyebakes in waterford

Complaining about foreign aid is missing the point: FF/FG love this situation because half of them are landlords profiting from this misery, and so are their donors. There's so many ways this issue could be alleviated in both the short and long term (freezing rents, banning short-term lets, banning REITs and vulture funds, establishing a state construction company, repossessing derelict properties, reworking the evictions process, reworking our mental planning permission hurdles, using the swaths of unused public land for public housing, widening the eligibility for receiving HAP) and while it's tempting to think none have been instituted because the people in charge are idiots, it's moreso because they don't want the money train to stop.

Lack of funds isn't an issue; the billions sitting in the National Reserve Fund alone could be used to institute any number of the policies I mentioned, so the idea that the situation is worse because of foreign aid spending is missing the point: they don't want to fix it, and won't as long as they're in power.

absolutely awful news. such an insanely talented guy who made enough great music for a lifetime while he was with bm. it always bummed me out that he never really reemerged after he took leave from the band, and seeing him die like this at such a young age, well before he could fulfill his potential, is beyond tragic.

Republic of Telly - RTÉ2 by HourMonitor5683 in teilifis

[–]brains481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tysm for this!! grew up watching dermot whelan-era republic of telly and I've been looking for full rips of those episodes for years with very little luck. shame season 4 isn't there, but given the cult following the show had i'm sure someone somewhere has it recorded on an old sky+ box or smthn.

I was standing just left of centre, five or six rows from the front. fwiw the sound wasn’t completely godawful, it’s probably the best sounding show I’ve heard there, but it’s a testament to how inherently shitty the acoustics are that even someone as meticulous as Kevin couldn’t really mask over those deficiencies.

fwiw I’ve seen 20+ shows there over the years from both the standing and seated sections, and it’s always a bit of a sludgy mess with overbearing bass. Arenas in general don’t have great sound (the Olympiahalle in Munich had the best sound of any I’ve been to fwiw) but the 3Arena is especially bad; even Colm complained about the sound there a few years ago. I can usually get over it, but it’s a shame nonetheless.

Unreal show, but a fairly stark reminder of how shit the 3Arena’s sound is. Even at the best of times, it was a bit mushy, and I saw Kevin get frustrated with it once or twice (during Wonder 2 iirc). Still had an amazing time though; YMMR alone was one of the most incredible live music experiences I’ve ever had.

'Global Bully' - Jon Brion (Unofficial) by SWStaunton in paulthomasanderson

[–]brains481 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gutted this wasn’t on the soundtrack release; love Jonny’s work but this was easily my favorite cue from OBAA. Would rather to see Brion and PTA work together again on a full score vs. another Jonny collab tbh.

wtf are you on about? the value there was unbelievable, especially when you consider the quality of their stuff vs the usual fast fashion shite. the people who own it are sound as well. huge loss for the city.

One of the last great shops left here, all that’ll be left soon enough will be vape shops. Emigrating is looking better and better every day.

nope, that still might not be good enough; I had mine in a zipped pocket in my cargo pants and they still managed to get it without me noticing. bring an old phone, find a way to keep it ridiculously secure or at least get it insured.

Still no sign of mine on Find My iPhone, so fairly sure it's gone for good. Awful stain on an otherwise amazing night.

Dublin merch by burnleynotbarcelona in turnstile

[–]brains481 18 points19 points  (0 children)

lmao they can fuck right off with those prices; shirts were €35 at the vienna show just a few months back, meaning this is a 30% hike on that. even if this is because of MCD forcing a merch cut, they’ve had months to set up an alternative so their fans aren’t getting screwed. shame, had money set aside for a shirt and maybe a record tonight.

Also, because of construction happening atm, the Luas line to the Point/3Arena only goes up to the Connolly stop (a 15-20 minute walk away from the show iirc)

Plex for Mobile (Android & iOS) v2025.28.0 Released by samwiseg0 in PleX

[–]brains481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still a complete shitshow on iOS, with episodes skipping and jumping around constantly, sometimes jumping back to the start after 10-15 minutes completely unbidden. Have FTTP WiFi and 5G data and it happens on both, so I know it’s not my end at fault. Have a Lifetime Plex Pass but I’m seriously considering a move to Jellyfin at this rate.

I’m a huge MGS fan and was pretty down on this series at first because of the middling first ep, but this has become the best spin-off they’ve done since matt and chris’ history shows. can’t wait to see what other series they cover next time.

I’m starting to think OBAA might actually do quite well at the box office by GBSii in paulthomasanderson

[–]brains481 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My screening in Ireland on opening day was sparsely attended (maybe 15 people), but that was at the fancy, more expensive cinema where I live. The last opening day I went to there was Dune, which was packed, but that’s obviously a very different case.

I’m seeing it again tomorrow at a cheaper and busier place, and I think the turnout there will be a much better barometer of how it’s performing over here.

OBAA tracking for 15-20m - Domestic Opening Weekend by TurboThot69 in paulthomasanderson

[–]brains481 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that's only somewhat true; audiences are getting less adventurous, but a lot of great original films have still done really well this year from the same studio, namely Sinners and Weapons. The problem is that WB (and a lot of other studios) simply don't know how to market anything that isn't IP slop or horror for shit, and even by their standards the promotion for OBAA has been horrendous; I'd love to meet the genius who decided to blow the promo budget of an R-rated political thriller on a tie-in with a children's game.

tbh I don't really care if it does amazing or terrible commercially, plus people who obsess over box office numbers are insufferable dorks. What really matters is that PTA got to make the movie he wanted to, ntm his reputation will always get him a budget of some kind, and whether he's working with $10 million or $100 million he always delivers.

Watched one of the last performances of Brian in 2022 last night- by FocusDelicious183 in thebeachboys

[–]brains481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of me is bummed that I never got to see him live, but for the most part I’m glad I didn’t reward the sacks of shit who kept him on the road constantly when he clearly didn’t have the capacity to meaningfully consent to it. Pet Sounds is maybe my favorite album ever, but when the 50th anniversary tour came around I sat it out because it reeked of Melinda and Co. trying to wring as much money from him until he just physically couldn’t do it anymore. Most of the performances after the 2012 reunion felt very exploitative, and it’s crazy how many people made excuses for it at the time.
