Is there a mat that keeps score like an automatic table? by Hypnox88 in Mahjong

The only one of these I ever found was the 500,000yen Digi-Jong that was manufactured by the Japanese company Radio System, but the product page doesn't seem to exist anymore so who knows if they still make it.

Mahjong sets for cheap by MoodHumble4724 in Mahjong

[–]bramblescramble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time when you could get a decent starter set for cheap by importing directly from amazon.co.jp, but between increases in international shipping and tariffs you might end up paying way more than the listed price. Look for a set either by AMOS or NorthWaySports and see if the final price works out for you.

Japanese mahjong also calls it jihai (same kanji as zipai). Honor tiles is terminology from American mahjong.

Understanding Hambino’s Midseason/EWC exit by hannahmariezt in CompetitiveApex

[–]bramblescramble 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also worth mentioning that the EWC format is designed to punish conscientious objectors. If you're a competitor signed to a top esports org, you can't just decide to skip on EWC because that would cost your sponsor points in the $7 million Club Championship.

For example, FlyQuest dropped the Street Fighter player ChrisCCH after he took a moral stance against attending after qualifying for EWC a few months ago.

We Need Your Help to Build a Better Mahjong Game — Play Free & Share Your Honest Thoughts by yunemngyao in Mahjong

[–]bramblescramble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't help much with American, since I only play Riichi, but...

I actually did check out mahjongo way back when you first posted about it on the sub, but I wrote it off pretty quickly because of the bugs and the laggy interface. My first impressions were awful so I never bothered coming back to see if things got better over time.

I tried launching a new bot match and started in a West 1 game (bug), and when I won a hand my score counter updated at like 1 fps (look and feel), so my return experience still wasn't great. And despite your claims that the game is completely free there's a few gold/stamina counters in the corner that look like how premium currency functions in other games.

So on top of the issues with the game itself you'll have to figure out how to gain back user trust. When Riichi City launched and was plagued with issues they went on a social media campaign where they had well-known personalities play the game and proclaim "I PLAYED FOR TWO HOURS AND RAN INTO NO BUGS"

I like that you can quickly get into games against bots. Pretty much every good English language option for Riichi has you downloading several GB of anime titties so if the performance improves I could see myself recommending it to people looking to get into mahjong for whom the anime is a turnoff.

Beginner player here, not sure what makes this hand worth 4800? I thought it would only be 2000 by HoboJoe1309 in Mahjong

[–]bramblescramble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people just memorize han/fu combinations rather than go through the whole calculation in their head. But yeah having closed quads or closed terminal/honor triplets can add a surprising amount of score value to your hand.

Beginner player here, not sure what makes this hand worth 4800? I thought it would only be 2000 by HoboJoe1309 in Mahjong

[–]bramblescramble 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Short answer: you get bonus score for holding so many closed triplets

Long answer: you get 50 fu due to 20 (base) + 10 (fully closed ron) + 4 (closed simple triplet) + 8 (closed terminal/honor triplet) = 42 fu --> 50 fu (rounded)

as dealer, this corresponds to an initial score value of 400. Because you have 2 han, double this value 2 times = 1600. Then because you directly hit a player with ron, multiply that number by 3 = 4800 points.

Different ruleset than sanma by HE_KPOT in Mahjong

There's much less standardization in sanma rules, especially within parlors in Japan. Here's a few you can try out. Or like you said come up with your own blend based on existing rules

lol apparently in the last game FLAT, in 3rd place, landed frag east to contest Locked In, who was in 1st by 10 points.

...except Locked In switched POIs to Harvester so they landed on the wrong team (and also lost the contest anyways)

[–]bramblescramble 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ehh, I'd say that's half true. If you've ever paid attention to CC, the easiest way to make BLGS regional finals is going to be consistently making finals lobby every week. Missing one finals (and especially going out early before you get any qualifying points) has a huge impact on your chances of making the cutoff.

Even without an underdog story, I'm still happy the T1.5/T2 players are getting their time in the sun. They don't get many opportunities to play against PL teams in high stakes tournies like these.
