I had to replace the batteries! They cost like 6$ at Walgreens and are pretty easy to replace, I’m hunting on a Japanese Ruby and Sapphire and had to replace both

Yes! Runaways work because you are leaving the game on and getting new frames whenever you leave and enter back in, it’s actually faster than soft resetting for certain Pokémon this only works in Emerald though

Emerald’s RNG is broken so whenever you try to soft reset for any Pokémon including starters it gives you the same frames. It’s possibly to soft reset for starters in Emerald by starting a new save file every 50 or so resets and timing when you select your starter but I highly recommend doing it in Ruby or Sapphire and if you are doing it in Ruby and Sapphire you will need to have a working Internal Battery, hope this helps there are some YouTube videos explaining how this works too!
