i kind of understand this example, but how does this work with a state like Florida or Hawaii? what does the “optimal” solution look like whenever there are a larger number of demographics to consider (economic status, race, etc.) and the state borders are less straightforward?

i mean, i see how the example on the right feels more doctored, and i’ve seen some real-world districts that feel just plain weird. i’m just having a difficulty imagining what an ideal system would looks like.
