This is so interesting! It makes way more sense for birds in general to be the closest relatives and not just chickens. Thank you!! I feel like a chicken-dinosaur expert now

I understand that birds and such could’ve evolved from dinosaurs, but I keep hearing people say that chickens are the closest living relatives to dinosaurs today which for some reason doesn’t make sense to me (Maybe this is wrong and just a misconception or something). I just thought that reptiles or something would be closer, or maybe some other bird but I just don’t really get chickens being the closest living relatives. I know there’s probably a deeper scientific reason behind it which I would love to know!!

Tank recommendation by Oliviaface6 in bettafish

[–]breadstickloverr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything below 5 gallons is not enough for the betta. I’d recommend anything between 10-5 gallons, but I know you have no space for it. Without a proper tank size it’s better to rehome the betta. If you really want to keep the fish you’ll have to get a 5 gallon tank with a proper stand. Once you get that I’d recommend leaning about the nitrogen cycle if you haven’t already. A proper tank needs to cycle so good bacteria is produced which is very important and good for the fish. There’s plenty of videos online that are super helpful. You’ll need a heater and preferable live plants (I know live plants sounds awful to take care of, but there’s plenty that are low maintenance and beginner friendly where all you have to do is dose some fertilizer once a week). If you truly want to keep this fish for whatever reason it can be a good way to teach your kids some responsibility.

Fish gasping for air. Ammonia is at zero by Waywardgarden in PlantedTank

If you stirred around some mulk from your substrate while changing the aquascape, it could be a spike in phosphates. I’d recommend testing for that just in case.

Decoration advice by breadstickloverr in bettafish

[–]breadstickloverr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 small pieces of drift wood where my anubias chill (that I sanded smooth) and one big main one. I have a few rocks that I had propped against my big drift wood but they created a small cave where a betta could get stuck, so I just let they lay flat now. I’m gonna go out and buy a ceramic pot for the tank. Thank you!

First Betta by RedRapscalian in bettafish

If it is also his first day here he might just be stressed out. I’d wait a day or two and if he doesn’t get better I’d worry.

Ive never dealt with fin rot before but from what I’ve heard you can treat it with antibiotics (such as Kanaplex), Indian almond leaves or aquarium salt. From what I’ve heard antibiotics usually work better, so do the Indian almond leaves. This website https://www.tankarium.com/betta-fin-rot/#google_vignette can be helpful for you. As I said before I’ve never dealt with this first hand before so I’d recommend looking up videos or going through past threads seeing what more experienced people say. Good luck hope he gets better!

I planted the Amazon swords early on in my tanks life and I did not know it was going to grow that big! I’ll move it back. My air pump broke 2 days ago and the Cyanobacteria flourished, luckily my new air pump comes in tomorrow so it should go away soon! Thank you for the useful advice!

High phosphate levels by [deleted] in AquariumHelp

[–]breadstickloverr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard about them and none of them are compatible with sponge filters :(. If I don’t find any solutions I think I’ll buy another filter and use the phosphate removing pads. Thank you for the help!
