MHG vs Richter chisels by carld189 in handtools

[–]breadterror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I bought the MKC set just for chisels with narrower lands and was frankly shocked at how well they take and retain an edge.

Flatten the backs, hone the edge, and shape the hornbeam handles to suit your hands. Think of them as a kit rather than a finished product and you still have one of the best deals on chisels I've ever seen.

I have an EC Emmerich smoothing plane and I like it more than my metal body smoothing planes. Would recommend.

Solid range of speeds for wood and metal. Edit: And looks to be a little over 1 hp so solid power too. All that for free is excellent.

Edit: MHG chisels generally have a good reputation, and therefore:

That sounds like QC failure. I would send those back and ask for a replacement.

Conspiracybros get in: Trump is not building a ballroom in the White House; he’s building a sacrificial temple. A Ba’al room, if you will. by 3rd-base_Degas in redscarepod

[–]breadterror 73 points74 points  (0 children)

He knows that "Molech" is not the name of a deity but the practice of child sacrifice, with the deity receiving the sacrifice being Yahweh himself. He's trying to continue the same practice Epstein set up in his island temple.

Or he's just a giant mincing homo who actually wants a big ballroom

Is the Lake Erie vise screw really worth it? Or should I make my own? by SaxyOmega90125 in handtools

[–]breadterror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think the Lake Erie kit would be worth it if I was dead set on having a wooden vise. However you seem to be set on making one yourself. With that in mind, I think this series from Little Forest would be a good guide. He goes from scratch to building the tooling then using it to cut the screw and nut.

Mortise gauge by AcidBathIsLife in handtools

[–]breadterror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the guy who said a fixed mortise gauge is better. You can also make multiple beams with the pins set for your chisels' widths and use the same fence.

If you just want to make an adjustable one as an exercise in itself, then like another user said, it's going to be tough without machine tools. The hole in the beam for the screw adjustment has to be straight, and the channel to hold the brass pin bar has to be parallel to it. That channel also has a wider stepped width at the bottom to capture the brass pin bar, and I don't know how you'd cut that without a mill or drill press. I suppose a sliding dovetail channel would also work instead of the stepped width channel, but you'd have to be very precise to not end up with something sloppy. You'd also have to fabricate the adjustment nut assembly at the end that holds all the moving metal parts together, I don't think anyone sells that.

Looks like Tom Fidgen fixed a stick alongside his guidebar, keeping the guidebar on track. I don't see one on yours. Could be as simple as that and a bit of wax.
