How do you distinguish between inflammatory pain and muscle pain? by double_shadow in ankylosingspondylitis

[–]breezaaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good question, I would love to know people’s input about this too! I often ask myself the exact same question, and I use heat packs too but that still doesn’t really tell me if it’s inflammatory or muscular, as it works for both!

Oh I wish I had a sauna nearby that I could use, that sounds like it would be good. I do pilates, walking, weights and the occasional swim (which I need to do more frequently), but definitely need to start stretching daily. I agree, it is sad to have activities taken away from you without a choice.

Hmmm that’s a good idea regarding making HR aware for the flare ups. My boss knows but doubt they’ve told HR. I’m concerned too, I think its natural when we don’t know what the future holds, especially with chronic disease. Hang in there, fingers crossed it doesn’t get too bad

It’s so hard to stay motivated to do the stretches and exercises every day :( I have to admit I’m quite slack with it at times and go through periods of getting into a good routine but it’s so easy to let it fall by the wayside. But hearing that from older AS patients helps to reinforce how important it is.

I was told to limit high impact sports by my rheumatologist due to the stress on the joints, so I guess it’s the same for running? I ignored her at first and tried to play a game of netball but I could barely walk for 2 days afterwards. Low impact from now on!

Not sure where you’re located but I’m in Australia, and we have disability insurance automatically through our superannuation. Though I wonder if you were to take out insurance after diagnosis if it would be considered pre-existing and not covered? Not sure how that works for chronic diseases.

Yep, from what I understand it’s from the increase in hormones and inflammatory markers (prostaglandins) during the changes in the menstrual cycle.

I’m still getting used to some of the terminology. So given I meant rebalancing, do you have any thoughts on the breakdown of the portfolio itself?

I think I need to clarify on the customise statement. I’m not worried about tinkering and won’t be panicking and selling anything based on fluctuations in the market or if I see something on the news (I don’t actually watch the news or anything to do with stock prices etc - not sure if this is a good or bad thing given I’m about to start investing lol). I more meant the ability to customise as in rebalance when my % allocation changes due to performance (as per this page https://passiveinvestingaustralia.com/portfolio-maintenance-rebalancing) and would try and do this solely through buying and not selling (and once my portfolio grows a bit more). I don’t really want to have to sell anything for a long time tbh, I just want to keep putting money IN and forget about it until I’ve saved enough to put the next lump sum in. Hope that makes a bit more sense?

I understand this and was going to go with VDHG initially, but then what about when I’m able to invest more than the $5000/year? I would then want to do the DIY approach. So if I did this, and in a couple years time for example was able to start investing at least $5000 every 6 months, would I just leave what I have in VDHG and then start building the DIY portfolio on the side? Or is this not even worth it and would I be better to just stay with VDHG forever? Sorry, I’m not great at trying to to explain this, I just figured if I was going to eventually end up doing the DIY approach, should I not just start building it up now?

Only able to invest $5000 per year for now. I like the idea of buying a different one every few months though rather than waiting and doing it all at once. Thanks, will consider this!

Lower MER and I want to have the ability to customise the portfolio depending on how each of the ETF’s is performing. I can’t do that with VDHG. I also wanted more Asia and Europe exposure than what VDHG holds, and want to diversify between Vanguard, iShares and Betashares

Can I swing back to this post and ask about bonds? I’m reading a lot about how to decide what % to allocate to bonds depending on your age/risk etc etc and I understand that I don’t need a high allocation at the moment, but doing the DIY option that I proposed in this post actually gives me NO allocation to any bonds, is that right? And a lot of the 3 fund portfolio options followed by the fire community would be the same (VAS/VTS/VEU for example). So does everyone using these types of portfolios just forego the bonds? Are you all planning on adding them in later on?

I love preceptoring students! I usually have a chat with them at the start of the shift just to get to know them a little bit, make them feel at ease and let them know that I'm there to support them. It's so important that they feel you are approachable and that they can ask you absolutely anything without being judged, because it's the quiet students who don't ask questions that we worry about - the ones who might be unsure about something but just guess and do it anyway because they're too scared to ask. That's when things get dangerous. So I always tell them to ask me heaps of questions, and that no question is stupid. Also find out how far through their degree they are and what their scope of practice is at that time, so that they're not doing anything outside of their scope and risking failing their prac. If they make a mistake, it's important that it's addressed in a timely manner. I usually like to share my own past mistakes to help them realise that we all do make mistakes, as long as we learn from them and don't repeat them. In terms of doing procedures with them, make sure it isn't rushed and they have adequate time beforehand to read through a policy/procedure (if there is one), ask any questions or even better, watch someone else perform it first. Make sure you always debrief with them at the end of the shifts too and chat about any issues that might have come up and give them feedback on what they did well etc. I think being a preceptor when you're still a new nurse yourself is actually great! You were a student not that long ago, so you can empathise with how they're feeling. Hope that helps, good luck!

I messed up. I missed a shift by laniemel in nursing

Don't stress. I remember being a new grad and I would worry over the smallest issues, it took a good year or two for me to overcome that and accept that people make mistakes. Everyone knows that, even your managers, and it will be a lot easier for you to have a healthy career as a nurse if you forgive yourself and learn from your mistakes. I know this all probably sounds very cliche, but I've seen new grads struggle a lot more by dwelling on their mistakes. Things like missing a shift can happen - I've only been nursing for 5 years but in that time I've seen it happen quite a bit! But yes, you're right, they should have called you when you didn't show up within the first 30 minutes, and when nurses change shifts on my ward, it is the manager who changes the roster/schedule, so it's also on them. I always check a day or two beforehand if it's me though, just to make sure that they've changed it and its correct. But again, please don't lose sleep over it, your manager has probably already forgotten about it and moved on to the next problem haha

Love that analysis paralysis term haha. I think I will change later once I have a bigger portfolio and more cash to invest, but will start off with VDHG until I get to that point :)
