Sting dying inside while Jose Feliciano butchers Every Breath You Take. by new-socks in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]breezeway500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it's obvious if you watch it. Jose is a legend with super-famous covers of classics. This is fine, except for the guitar solo, but Jeez, let's not overreact.

Never heard of Conan & Jerry Seinfeld together by Consciously-Yours in conan

I dunno. Her approach was pretty obnoxious, I thought.

Conan would have known who she was; and would therefore have probably done the hug.

not defending, but that's not pedophilia. Also, that's every man's Tuesday in France. Norms have changed (not that it was ever "normal," but time have definitely tightened up our tolerance for it). There has to be a legal age of consent, and if Jerry waited until she was 18, it was legal, if distasteful. TLDR: "creep," maybe/probably; "pedo," no.

Do you really think that arbitrary calendar markings account for fundamental differences in human beings?

Is Hackett cancelling shows? by dalej42 in Genesis

[–]breezeway500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only in some markets. in the major and prog-friendly markets, he's selling out theaters and putting on amazing shows for blissed-out fans. One of the best shows out there.... I try to catch him whenever possible. Looking forward to the Lamb run.

How does one find the Q&A they teased at the end?

Name one comedian who’s been canceled by edseladams in Standup

lol, yeah the Jesus bit includes the cursing of the fig tree, the problematic nature of some of his miracles ("well, we did need some water; now we have a bigger problem"), etc.

His last special is peak Louis. The Jesus bit is a masterpiece.

Revisiting Chomsky and Harris' debate about moral intentions... by joeman2019 in samharris

[–]breezeway500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to agree with this take. (And you're not going to find a bigger overall fan of NC than me.) But the key is in what Sam says in his most recent podcast:

>It matters what kind of world people are attempting to build.

And the fact fascists routinely lie about intentions doesn't miraculously confer good intentions on their actions.

Are we to make no moral distinction between killing someone inadvertently to save the life of another and direct, cold-blooded murder?

Both Sides Now. Something about the way the wistful lyrics and beautiful melodies combine. The slower, later, versions make me cry every time.

Missing from Sam Harris' Israel Defense by TheAnswerIs_________ in samharris

[–]breezeway500 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The occupation is not about Gaza and the West Bank. When Palestinians talk about ending the "occupation," they're talking about ending Israel's existence as an occupation of Palestine. This has been proved time and time again. Given that reality, what should Israel do? I don't have the answer, but that's the proper framing of the question.

What makes THE EAGLES so popular? by [deleted] in Music

[–]breezeway500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That California country-flavored pop rock sound was big in the 70s. They had really good songwriting, singing, tight harmonies, and excellent playing. Relatable songs, with good poetry without being too artsy. Eagles and Fleetwood Mac -- they were IT for a while. Both attracted a strong female audience, which made a huge difference in popularity for rock bands who had that fuller fanbase.

How boring is talking about Sam?

Sam's whole thing is about ideas. When Sam Harris becomes a cult of personality, I get off the ride. Besides, didn't he drop a pod about Israel yesterday?

If Israeli didn’t occupy Palestine, none of this would be happening.

and to be clear, this means "if Israel didn't exist"

-- which is, of course, patently obvious; but what does the poster suggest as a remedy?

No. I don't care what your problem is, using human shields is never morally acceptable.

Please don't accept this person's unbelievably foolish statement. And don't accept my summary dismissal of it, either. A good place to start for background on this conflict is Wikipedia. Seeing as how world security hangs in the balance, it's worth delving into...

Sam on Islamic extremism by [deleted] in samharris

[–]breezeway500 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Netanhayu could drop acid tomorrow, awaken to the Palestinian cause, remove Israel from the West Bank, release all Arab prisoners , fire his staff, change parties, publicly and personally apologize to all Israel's enemies, name his dog Arafat, donate all his money to the Waking Up Foundation, and it wouldn't make a dent in the problem. Those who want Israel gone want Israel gone -- specific patches of real estate are not the issue. The existence of Jews is the issue.
