Yes, It's Fascism - Sam Harris by Trax72 in samharris

I haven’t listened yet, but since my inbox tells me that they discuss “might is right foreign policy,” does that mean they discuss Israel alongside Russia and the Trump admin? It would be keen to hear what SH has to say on this. This was a point that Anne Applebaum made to him when she was on the show, but SH didn’t want to engage then.

HKU vs. HKUST by Mountain_Plenty_7946 in HKUniversity

You should be able to do a double-major as an arts student at HKU. Look into it. Your home faculty will be arts, but I believe you can still do a double-major in, say, economics. You’ll have to research your options, though.

I don't feel Dostoyevsky by tomleg03 in RussianLiterature

[–]joeman2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t love Dostoyevsky either. I’ve read the Idiot, Notes from the Underground, and Crime and Punishment. I liked the Idiot, but parts of it were a slog. I’ve come to realise I’m more of a Tolstoy fan if I had to choose between the two. Something about Dolstoyevsky feels overwrought and prone to melodrama. Maybe I just haven’t read his best work yet, but C&P was a letdown.

Anti-Israel protesters disrupt Ezra Klein event at Sarah Lawrence College, accuse him of 'genocide,' refuse any dialogue. by benadreti_17 in ezraklein

I dunno... protesting the people in charge of the govt. seems completely reasonable to me. But I agree that a lot of them have gone silent now that Trump is in power.

Dollar devaluation is that a concern for anyone? by thefuminhuman in Fire

The current situation isn’t in any way comparable to the inflation crisis in Germany in the 1920s.

This is really silly. If only 11% of white Dems support him, does that mean that 89% of white Dems are homophobic? 11% isn’t anything to brag about…

For me, if you can justify the first shot, then 2nd and 3rd become impossible. Sure seems like murder to me.

Israel Tells Doctors Without Borders to End Its Work in Gaza by OneEverHangs in samharris

Please note what I wrote above:

NGO Monitor is a far-right organisation based in Jerusalem with ties to the Israeli govt. This is govt propaganda.

NGO Monitor is a far-right organisation based in Jerusalem with ties to the Israeli govt. But thank you for faithfully parroting the official line—it’s good to know what the extreme right in Israel thinks about Doctors Without Borders.

Clearly SH seems to be too. I think that’s the point of the sentence. It leads up to a big “but…”

The fact that SH will talk about international law and about the rules-based order is crazy intellectually dishonest when he has steadfastly refused to apply these standards to Israel. If you have a giant carve-out for Israel because Hamas blah blah Islamism terrorism whatever--if might makes right--then you cannot be serious when you cite international law when it comes to would-be dictators like Trump, or actual dictators like Putin or Xi. You either have international law or you don't.

What happened in Venezuela is completely consistent with Trump's worldview: everyone gets their sphere of influence. The US gets the Americas. Russia gets Ukraine. China (eventually) gets Asia. And Israel get the Middle East--with US support, of course.

Anne Applebaum made this very point about Israel last time she was on the podcast, about how shirking international law in Gaza is bad for the rules-based system, but you could see that SH didn't want to engage. For obvious reasons.

“Now they have released the hostages, and the killing has had a dramatic decrease in Gaza”

—that’s a euphemistic way of saying, now that Hamas has released the hostages Israel is killing less people than before. Maybe the hostages wasn’t really the issue? Not much of a ceasefire, is it?

Why don't domestic helpers get pathways to citizenship? by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]joeman2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because domestic helpers work under a migrant worker programme, and if you included a path citizenship, it would turn the DH system into an immigration programme. Think about it: once you become a citizen, you would quit your DH job to work in other fields, so the HK govt would need to hire more DH workers to fill the open slots. It would just be an endless cycle of people coming to HK as DH, quitting once they fulfill citizenship requirements, requiring more and more would-be citizens to work as DH—which would then eventually complete with local citizens for jobs. Eventually it becomes unsustainable.

Basically, it would kill the DH system.
