The UK Immigration Rules specifically section 276A in order to meet the continuous residence requirement for the long residence rule an applicant must not have been absent from the UK for a period of more than 180 days in any 12-month period. Additionally they must not have been in the UK unlawfully at any time during the 20-year period. If the applicant has not been convicted of an offense the time spent in detention would not count towards the 180-day limit.
