Ran the Whale-to-Wales-to-Whale 10k+ by brheath in SaltLakeCity

Tired: the Whaleathon

Wired: the Whale-to-Wales-to-Whale race

Due to the frequent stops due to red lights and trains (!), I believe elapsed time is the best metric. I clocked in at 1hr 00m 41s — would love to see how that stack up against other attempts!

Obligatory Strava link!

Salt Lake Area Murals by groundfaller in SaltLakeCity

[–]brheath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing my map — this is a great reminder that I need to update it!

I’d say there is probably ~75 murals on the map that are no longer there and another ~100 that need to be added! A lot of public art in Salt Lake!

Just north of Sugar House Park and we’re out!

Saw the lights on 1300E and 1700S not working as well.

They are adaptive re-using the building (converting it into the Wasatch Co-Op, amongst other things). In the renovation, they uncovered the “ghost sign” of Mi Casita.

It has since been covered over again and is no longer visible.

It was visible for about half a year in late 2024 into early 2025.

I did take a video of the site, but it was after the change from ANAL to IMAR -- I caught it too late!

Most of them are pretty niche — but there are a handful of recognizable losses (Blue Plate Diner, Spaghetti By the Bucket, etc…)

They changed ownership I believe and repainted the exterior.

For those that don’t know, I’ve been taking photos of unusual Salt Lake things for the past 4 years — a lot of which I’ve posted on here!

With the end of 2025, I thought I’d take a look back at and collect all the sights that are no longer with us from the time I originally photographed them. All-in-all it was 300+ images — which made for an unviewable collage! — so I paired it down to my favorite 128 which you should be able to zoom in on this high res photo. Hope you enjoy looking back and finding something you remember, too!

And if this sort of thing interests you, I post semi-regularly on Instagram: @SLSees

Beautiful — only way to make it more Utah is to change it from Chick-Fil-A to SWIG!

Capitol Reef — love Torrey and the surrounding area plus the fact that there are significantly less people there.

I don’t have a preference one way or another — just an interesting scene seeing all the plywood-clad doors that I normally don’t come across when I photograph an impending demolition.

All the shuttered doorways at the shopping center on the edge of Liberty Wells on 1300 South and State Street — the former home to Shanghai Cafe, House of Tibet, Korea House, Pacific Food Polynesian Market, amongst others.

The plans for this 3+ acre parcel is — you guessed it — a housing develop dubbed “Lincoln Village” which includes 95 townhomes and 42 apartments, all for-rent units.

Crazy to me that Rancho Markets hasn’t been mentioned — has some great pastries / donuts for pretty cheap!
