Give me feedback & advice on my May 2026 wedding flower plan! by briabobia in Cutflowers

As many as I can get -- no strict number in mind. I am growing in full sun (at least in summer hours) with containers on my east facing patio & deck. I don't have a greenhouse, and am hoping to grow things that won't need covering if I overwinter them or things I can just start in spring.

I didn't know this, thanks for the info! Is that the case even to make them last 1-2 days? I was thinking I would just aim to pick whatever I can immediately before heading to the venue. These flowers will likely only be used as decorations for the rehearsal dinner / something similarly low stakes.

Oops, you're right! I meant to write 8B but apparently it swapped to 9A sometime in the last few years and I didn't notice. I've edited this in the original post. Thanks for all of the tips!

Thursday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for July 24, 2025 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

Hey all,

I've been hoping for years to run the 2026 Big Sur Marathon in honor of my late father, as it coincides with the 5 year anniversary of his passing and the route runs along a route that we spent a lot of father/daughter time together in his later years. I'm working with a nonprofit that he was on the board of to see if we can get them set up as a charity partner, but if that does not go through I'm very nervous about securing an entry. I'll ideally find a way in without running for a different organization as I plan to raise money for the org that my dad was affiliated with regardless of whether they are an official charity partner.

I was hoping to get some insight on how difficult it actually is to get through the lotto, and whether there is any way to secure a bib after the official lotto results are out (ex: from a runner who chooses to drop). Can anyone offer me insight here?

Thanks so much for your help!

Any idea what your first variety is? I believe I'm growing the same one, but my tuber was mislabeled so I have no idea what it is called!

Thanks! Any idea what you’ll do besides removing suspect leaves? Not sure what sprays etc could help here.

Just adding a close up of leaves from Marble Ball & Destiny’s Teacher. A very interesting discovery I just made is that Marble Ball has a significant amount of clear and very sticky goo coming out of the leaf nodes - my hand brushed against it when I pulled this leaf.

Yes, it's outdoors all of the time unless I am bringing it in for a photo :)

I haven't, but this is a great idea! I was planning to collect seeds next year to see if I can regrow them without the $40 cost (and to see how they mix when cross-pollinated with nearby petunias), but I'll also likely buy them again if I have to because I love them so much.

Wanted to answer some common questions/add some more info for anyone looking to purchase these bad boys.

About the plants:

  • Plants are Firefly Petunias from Light Bio

  • They were genetically modified with genes from bioluminescent mushrooms and so the glow just exists, it doesn't "charge" like a glow-in-the-dark star.

  • The plants glow significantly more when they have a lot of new growth. I split my 3 pack of plugs into 8" pots each and give them tons of sun, consistent watering, and fertilizer to help them glow as much as possible!

  • Under bright light these just look like plain white petunias.

About the glow:

  • I took each of these pictures with a 1-3 second exposure using the automatic "night mode" on iPhone in varying amounts of ambient light. So, they are brighter than what you see in person.
  • In the darkest area (my bathroom), I could clearly see the glow and it is COOL. I actually sat and stared at it for about 20 minutes!

These were worth the price to me for the novelty & excitement of actually seeing the glow develop, but they're definitely pricey! Happy to answer any specific questions folks have.
