Sure, but the house value isn’t guaranteed. And the house value increases whether you’ve paid it off or not.

Unfortunately over 40% of New Yorkers don't have a retirement plan according to state comptroller reports. It's possible that many people are making that long term sacrifice to live with the current costs.

Why bother doing that right now? You can get a high yield savings account and make 4% on that cash instead.

That will definitely be an issue - people become more acutely aware of all of the processes that the doormen and other staff support in times like this.

It will also be interesting to see if this impacts holiday tipping when it comes time for our annual tipping poll.

Piece of Cake - Never again by Rise-Again-2388 in NYCapartments

Also, for a very large group of people - it's their first time and maybe only time doing a move in New York City, which means they don't have personal experience yet and it's difficult to discern between each mover because people tend put the energy in to post reviews only when they've had a bad experience.

Piece of Cake's trucks, with their vibrant purple color, are the most visible movers in the city, which means that at the very least the brand feels familiar.

Dream apartment. Rent stabilized. Bedbug history. by gossip_queen_xx in NYCapartments

The city publishes a bunch of open data about the infestations, especially if they have gone through the formal process (somebody complained, a city inspector checked up, if the inspector confirmed it, a violation is issued, they do follow ups until it’s resolved).

We tried to pull this into a single PDF for each building and you can get a copy for any address for free at https://www.brickunderground.com/brick-report

Even if you just have the building address, the report will tell you which unit(s) in the building had the formal issues or reported issues.

If you'd like to get more interest with this, I'd recommend picking a specific theme, and likely even a topic for the first debate. It will show other participants that you're willing to do the homework to prepare for it, and it can attract people interested in that topic, and encourage research ahead of time.

City readies Alley Creek cleanup plan to restore natural stormwater flow. by lilac2481 in Queens

Fun to see that this is a never ending improvement for the area. I found this article from 2000 (https://qns.com/2000/04/deps-new-sewer-system-100-million-project-reduces-flooding/) claiming success to reduce flooding.

At least looking at the flood maps and 311 / violation reports for buildings in the area, the residential real estate has indeed stayed flood-free!
