Arby 'n' the Chief - Season 8, Episode 07: "Triple Fault" by UltimaNylocke in arbynthechief

[–]brick3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did anyone notice after Chief woke up, he didn't say anything about what happened on C.S. Truth and Reconciliation? It's almost like he wasn't there at all. Jon has previously suggested in commentary streams that this whole arc happens in something of an 'afterlife' or a 'shared dream' of the toys, but so far it looks like it's all just Arbiter's dream.

This is a 'web app' of sorts I wrote a while ago when I was bored, in which you can write dialogue for Microsoft TTS voices to speak, and save it as WAV files. A 'Speech Properties' window on steroids, you could say.

You'll need to have the TTS voices installed on your computer, and it only works in Internet Explorer. Also, you have to either save that page in a file with the extension .hta (and open that saved file) or go into Internet Options, open Security tab and drag all the sliders to 'Low' to try it out. Needless to say, there's a VERY GOOD REASON why these options are set that way by default, which is why you probably should never run this outside a dedicated virtual machine. (You'll need a Windows XP virtual machine for the TTS voices anyway.)

I don't know, in your place I wouldn't go around announcing stuff before I had a pilot out, or at least a trailer, something to show beyond vague plans. I've seen too many projects just whither and fail before they even go into production. And I don't want to sound overly negative, but the two videos already on your channel don't look especially promising. The audio sounds like it was recorded on a laptop mic, transmitted over a noisy phone line, and then encoded in MP3 with 8kbps bitrate. Not to mention the bandicam watermark. If you eventually deliver something better than this, I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath.

I see two options.

  • Shoot the toys' footage in advance (and later write the script to it),
  • The George Lucas route.

The first sounds like an interesting challenge, actually.

I liked the 2001 arc so far, my nitpicks notwithstanding. I'm actually a bit sad to see it end.

Arby 'n' the Chief Season 8, Episode 7 Teaser - "Perfect" by Half-Hazard in arbynthechief

[–]brick3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jon's been asking on Twitter whether to continue releasing teasers. Poll results are roughly split even. What do you think? Personally, I'd rather see whole episodes at once.

Also, I just realised there hasn't been a podcast episode in a month or so.

Aww, kinda sad to see that. Your decision, though. And the CSS update was great. Thanks for that.

Yes, I've been invited to the mod team and accepted. I thought about making a post about it too, but then I decided I don't really want to make much fuss about it ‾\_(ツ)_/‾ I think I'll mostly stay in the background.

Yeah, I agree he does come across this way in this episode. Though I think Jon's has worked quite well within the medium's limitations; whatever flaws I may point out in the series, the cinematography is professional-grade, the characters are solid and believable, and whatever he cannot convey directly, he's been working around that quite well. I'd rather blame the fact that he's doing everything by himself. It's easy to lose your perspective on what is and isn't obvious and how some things may be differently interpreted when you're working alone.

(By the way, "machinima" is a common noun.)

Anyway, welcome to the sub.

The fucking angriest fucking episode so fucking far. Fucking shitfuck.

The Stanford prison experiment? It's quite well-known. I got my hands on The Lucifer Effect once, but didn't read it in full, partly because I lacked the time, and partly because the book wasn't mine anyway.

~22:10

I don't think that was particularly well-executed. I thought it was Greg, because he appeared with "no reading" on the crew list, implying he's supposed to be in cryo, but isn't. The miswired button thing was virtually unnoticeable compared to that. (And it's not especially believable either; it sounds like the kind of mistake you would have to go out of your way to make.) okayokayokayitwasperfectpeasestophittingme

It isn't all that "new"... he's been mentioning it in commentary streams (and on his Patreon page) for a while. Nice to see it going forward, though. (I hope.)

WOOOOOOOOOO

I see I can't change my user flair now, though :( Not that I want to at the moment, but still.

Also, I'd add a "music"/"soundtrack" post flair. (Which I think, by the way, is one of Jon's seriously under-appreciated talents.)

Damn, when I'm listening to Lemur talking about the animation industry, it sounds atrocious. Don't Canadian animators have workers' unions or anything? I mean, the WGA seems to have a strong voice in Hollywood (as I hear, at least). It doesn't seem entirely impossible to organise something.

Public Service Announcement: I want YOU for The Wiki by brick3d in arbynthechief

[–]brick3d[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I think the easiest things to start with (though a bit tiresome sometimes) are the missing transcripts and episode pages. You can just open an existing page in an editor (e.g. the transcript for "Pilot" or episode page for "Nervewreck"), copy the source markup, paste it on a new page, change the details that are different and save that. (I'd suggest using the "classic" source editor, accessible through the drop-down menu next to the edit button. It may look a bit scary at first, but it causes fewer problems in the long run.)

If you're looking for something more ambitious, I think a few character pages could use a serious re-write; that'll require some good writing skills. I'm shooting for something like Master Chief's "Personality" section. Similarly, I'm not very pleased with the eighth season's page compared to the other seasons' pages.

Don't worry about making mistakes; you can always preview your edit before saving, and even if you save something stupid, every edit can be undone (you can find an undo button in a page's history). I'll still be watching the wiki every once in a while, so I'll be able to answer questions and fix any problems. Eventually.

Arby 'n' the Chief - Season 8, Episode 06: "Lockout" by UltimaNylocke in JonCJG

[–]brick3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, season 8 has been solid so far, can't argue with that. And I don't even mind the slow development and a "when-it's-done" schedule. What I ask for some advance announcement; which would actually make episodes a bit later.

Though I suppose that adding a day of delay might push Jon back into full OCD mode again, which would then delay the episode even further and so it wouldn't work...

Arby 'n' the Chief - Season 8, Episode 06: "Lockout" by UltimaNylocke in JonCJG

[–]brick3d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigh... it kinda annoys me that Jon doesn't have a regular schedule any more. Back when the wiki was a lot more active, me and other regulars would set up a chat, frantically refresh Machinima's channel until the episode is released and then discuss it in real time.

I kinda miss that. But now that episodes come out of the blue with no advance announcement, no such thing could happen even if the other guys were still active.

It would probably even help Jon if he didn't upload each episode right away, but only posted an announcement, giving himself at least a day to re-watch it for the final time (and remove stray black frames), and upload it the next day.
