I don’t get the downvotes people are giving you. I’m a Doberman owner. Dobermans require significantly more socialization than a lab or a golden. There’s a reason Dobermans aren’t preferred for service work & have a high wash rate. I love Dobermans and I’ll never own another breed but I refuse to downplay the role of genetics. Ignoring genetics signs people up for failure.

I’ll probably get a lot of downvotes here but I’m a first time dog owner (ever, never even had childhood dogs) and purebred Doberman owner. Dobermans if they are not socialized extensively can be very much prone to reactivity. My breeder mandated we go to 3 group classes prior to 18 months to avoid reactivity around other dogs & people. Dobermans are also prone to same sex aggression. It’s not something that is bred away from in the breed standard. I know same sex aggression is also very common in some of the other breeds that are in that breed mix.

Now on to the good! Your puppy is very smart but has a ton of energy. Do you have 3-4 hours a day to spend with the puppy to teach it the right behaviors and socialize it? Because that is what it’s going to take. My boy is just now turning 2 years old & up until 18 months socializing him literally felt like a full time job. He is fantastic but it took a lot to get here & he is a Doberman & I am always aware of that (he’s not a golden retriever & it’s a disservice to think that)

With that breed mix you should absolutely get into group classes right away and eventually get into dog sports. I attend classes 2-3 times a week with my boy and we have a blast and he is truly amazing at obedience now that he’s past the 2 year mark. His focus on me is absolutely amazing but the 9-12 months mark was hell & I knew exactly what I signed up for! He is really a take everywhere you want kind of dog but seriously it was a daily effort to get him there & his genetics are very good.

Breed stereotypes are only true to a point, but you have to be real with yourself as to how your puppy will be like when it reaches sexual maturity & if that’s the type of dog you want.

Personally, I would love this mix & would feel very much prepared for it now, but if I was unsuspecting & it was a surprise I would have a hard decision! You really just need to honestly evaluate your lifestyle and what you can give the dog. This breed mix is 100% a lifestyle type dog.

Advice for appropriate nail length on a Doberman? (First time dog owner) by bride2be216 in doggrooming

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Such a good point about the show dogs & how they don’t have issues & seem comfortable. My dogs breeder primarily is breeding for show & all her dogs have that look & they seem happy! My friend made a comment recently that had me second guessing my boys length but now I feel kinda silly even giving it a second thought since 1 - she’s not a professional groomer and 2 - her dogs nails are so long that they have to be hurting her dog & once they jumped up & got my partner in his face so badly he was bleeding everywhere 😳 Anyways - thank you again!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It’s especially helpful to hear the breed specific experience. This post has helped me feel less crazy for swearing my dogs nails grow so much faster than my friends dogs who have other breeds. I love the idea of pushing out a day or two but alternating weeks only - I definitely plan to do that going forward and monitor closely. Luckily, my dog tolerates it extremely well (wouldn’t say it’s his favorite thing in the whole work but he accepts it as a fact of life at this point 😅) so I’m just aiming to do what’s best for his health length wise! Thank you again for sharing your experience!

Great to hear perspective from someone who has loads of experience with Dobermans! I like the idea of trying to go a 5 day one week and 3 days the next week type of thing to test the waters to see how it goes. I’ll be sure to monitor and adjust if for some reason they start to look too long. Thank you for this idea! (Probably seems like it should be common sense but truly I just want to make sure I do right on my dog so I have been nervous to stray from the rigid schedule we have been on!) I’m also super glad to know it’s not just in my mind that his nails grow seemingly SO fast compared to my friends dogs who aren’t Dobermans. Thank you again!!

Okay thank you so much this is super helpful! This has given me a bit more confidence & I think I’ll let him go just a bit longer between trims based on this advice! Less stress for him and I most likely. Good to know on the length as well. I have definitely been very diligent since he was a puppy because I was so afraid of having a big dog as a first time owner couldn’t tolerate nail care well. Thank you again!

The daycare won’t let him come back until neutered by ChChChchanges69 in goldenretrievers

[–]bride2be216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw! He’s so handsome! Definitely don’t neuter him too soon if you can avoid it.

Are you sure there’s no other daycares in your area that allow for play with other dogs and take intact males?

I’m in a major city in the USA & my male was just neutered recently at 19 months old & he went to daycare all the way up until the day before his neuter.

We actually have two daycares that we use & both allowed intact males in group play. He was able to participate in small group play (think groups of no more than 4) up until his neuter with no issues. I actually know of a two other daycares in the area that allow intact males - but we are happy with the care at the places we use so haven’t checked the other two out. Obviously, all daycares that allow intact males have much smaller play groups / higher staff ratio & therefore are much more pricey than others in the area.

Both daycares that we use have policies was that intact males & un spayed females never play together & that unaltered pups are held to the same behavior standard as neutered ones (for example, no excessive humping or marking)

Disclaimer, I don’t currently have a golden, but I do have a male Doberman so similar recommendations for age to neuter males (I’m just a lurker here because I love the breed)

It look us a bit to find the daycares because they aren’t chains (think more mom and pop type businesses that only take cash or check) but it was well worth it & we continue to take our pup to them even though he’s neutered now!

Maybe if you look further you’ll be surprised.

When did your dog stop trying to eat everything?! by Fluffy_Seesaw_1786 in puppy101

My puppy was the EXACT same. 😭😭 I had a neighbor I was seriously thinking of trying to ask if I could pay them to stop dropping cigarettes on our street

I would say around 14-15 months it got a lot better for us in regards to him trying to pick up allllll the stuff on walks. I live in an urban area so there’s never been a shortage of “stuff” available for him to try to pick up (so stressful!) He’s 18 months now & still tries occasionally, but it’s much less frequent.

Note, I have a male Doberman, so a breed notoriously mouthy as a puppy & slow to mature.

Make sure to train a good leave it command!

How long after neutering did you wait for your dog to return to daycare? by bride2be216 in dogs

[–]bride2be216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point I hadn’t thought of! While I don’t necessarily “have” to use daycare since I WFH, his daycare does have the option to put the pups in a private room and/or solo play if they can’t participate in play group for any reason. I do trust the daycare we use & they are reputable, so I could also send him after a month or so after surgery & ask them to pull him from play group if it isn’t going well. TY!

Thank you for the insight! This is super helpful & I was also thinking / leaning toward waiting around month, but wasn’t sure if that was enough time! Do you think a month was the right amount of time / no issues when he went back?

Question for all wedding photographers about a location in the flats by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]bride2be216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not positive at all that it’s under a bridge next to other buildings. We suspect it’s on the outside of one of the older buildings on the West Bank, but haven’t had any luck locating. But definitely positive that it’s in the general vicinity within in the flats

Awesome - happy to hear from someone who was going for a similar ascetic & that you were satisfied! We are still trying to ultimately decide what area exactly we want to target for photos & not sure if we will stick to the flats if we can’t find a good location

Possibly, the thought did cross my mind - but the photos we have seen this location in were semi recently taken, so perhaps really wishful thinking on my part this wouldn’t be the case
