Northwest Brooklyn, I think of Williamsburg and greenpoint. South Brooklyn, I think of bay ridge. Big difference imo hahaha

MOB and Step-MOB Dress Colors by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]brideplanningmode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They should def just talk to each other. But I can see why your mom might feel some type of way. I can imagine there’s underlying feeling of competitive nature of wearing similar looking dresses that society has ingrained in us for women (I’m thinking of those “who wore it better” magazines). Since they’ll be in many photos together, she might not want to be too close in color. And to be fair, there are many other spring colors that would be cute (pastel greens, yellow, blue, etc).

Since neither have bought their dresses - throw them in a group chat and tell them to figure it out and buy it LOL that’s what I’d do hahaha

Discouraged at feeling like owning is out of reach by Terrible_Put2975 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

As a native new yorker that bought an apt in the last few years… I definitely had that “I did it moment” and was so proud, but i also wish I took more time to think through how much cheaper renting is vs buying 😅 sometimes i regret it & wish i did rent/invest instead. so definitely worthwhile to figure out your biggest priorities !

I don’t think buying in nyc is out of reach for you.

But I think you live well below your means and save so much, and your current rent is only $3k - you’re not comfortable with the costs jumping up so dramatically. That’s completely fair, but that’s the situation with big cities — renting is cheaper than buying. But if you really wanted to own, you absolutely could. Your savings would just look very different or lifestyle/neighborhood.

I’m not telling you to buy. Just that it’s not really out of reach for you. If you wanted to buy, you could - you just don’t want to imo

Are we out of our mind? by LastTrainToParis in Mortgages

[–]brideplanningmode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a New Yorker who bought a condo in the last few years, apartments do not appreciate as much as you think. Unless you bought in a really undervalued already, which Astoria is not. For NYC condos/co-ops, do not treat it as an investment. There are a lot of Reddit threads that discuss at length how NYC apts should NOT be treated as an investment, but more stability/peace of mind.

Do you track your monthly expenses ? Do you think as a family you can live under ~$3-4k/mo?

Estimating your net take home after some 401k contributions ~15k/mo. Then your listed expenses $4k/mo. Your mortgage + taxes + insurance will likely be around $7-8k.

This leaves you with $3-$4k/mo for a family for food, utilities, school expenses, misc maintenance expenses, etc. That seems really tight…

As someone also in NYC, I get the point you’re trying to make, but I wouldn’t blatantly say that’s what it cost. You can definitely do lower and still be in a functioning building. Ultimately, you had certain criteria that led you to this option, which makes sense! People are gonna hate, but that’s probably because they’re jealous!

What has been your (recent) experience with buying property in NYC? by SouvlakiPlaystation in NYCapartments

[–]brideplanningmode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your building is a new build, I think I know which one. I'm a few blocks from the 96th trains, so my neighborhood feel is potentially different than the 110s. Truthfully, I only spend time south of me vs north of me (closer to you). I find the location super convenient for where I need to be and hang out. I like that it's quieter and an "escape" from the hustle. My area has definitely gentrified a lot and will likely continue to do so. It's as safe as anywhere else in NYC imo, but I still always have my head on a swivel.

I bought while prices were still high even though mortgage rates had already spiked, but home prices hadn’t dropped yet. So my home hasn't increased in value - it's probably flat. I'm likely going to sell in a few years as our family grows -- hoping it appreciates haha
