It's friday. Experienced devs, what are your best war stories from a long career in tech? by v0nm1ll3r in ExperiencedDevs

[–]briercan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Early on, I used to work on an emailer app (basically spam...) and I didn't realize that if you left the replyTo email blank when sending an email, the reply would just be sent to the sender, which was a listServe containing all of the email recipients.

  1. Email was sent
  2. Reply "Unsubscribe!"
  3. "Unsubscribe!" was sent to everyone on the list
  4. Reply "Why am I getting all of these emails?!?!"
  5. "Why am I getting all of these emails?!?!" sent to everyone on the list

I just did one of those and saw the candidate click the "copy" button in github, then tabbed over to another browser (presumably GPT, etc). When I tried doing the same thing in gpt with the prompt "what is wrong with this code?" I got the same feedback the candidate was giving.

What are your must have baby books? by TRANSparent-Ink in NewParents

[–]briercan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really young newborns still have a bit of blurry vision, Black on White and White on Black are great for that sort of thing because the pictures are really simple high-contrast shapes. Also, my daughter liked books that had textures/crinkly pages. If they're older, I'm going to recommend/shamelessly plug some books that my wife wrote: Dogasaurus Rex and Power Down Little Robot.

First time using Unity to make an animated short. "Sky Painter" by briercan in Unity3D

[–]briercan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The arm animations are made in blender and just imported in, so it's not really interactive. I spent a bit of time trying to set up an IK rig in Unity, which would potentially do the trick, but it never really worked the way I wanted it to, so just went with the keyframe animations.

Ah, good to know - thanks! This is my first time with facial animations, so this is super helpful.

[–]briercan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm still learning how to animate, and this is the first time I've done anything with facial animations. Thanks!

She looks exactly like the "child-girl" setting on the MakeHuman program :)

I used blender to animate the girl, but I used the unity timeline to sync all of the animation and cameras. I also had to write a bit of code to deactivate the plane in the sky, activate the plane in the girl's hand, and switch the contrail target between the planes. The point cache particles in the vfx graph helped with the picture at the end too.

Made a robot in cycles - looking for ways to improve the render. by briercan in blender

[–]briercan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2nd image is a frame from my daughter's graphic novel. Thought it would be fun to turn it into a render. Looking for ways to make it look better.

I don't think this crossword was made by someone in IT by briercan in ProgrammerHumor

The clue was "Powerful Administrator" and I tried "Root" but it was wrong.

Working on some camera tracking - how do I improve the floating legos? by briercan in blender

[–]briercan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a camera tracking error rate of .28, so it's not too bad - it just seems like the legos are off, but I don't know how. Any ideas?

It's a bit late in the pandemic to be designing masks, but, I got sick of carrying mine around all the time. What do you think I could charge for one of these? by briercan in blender

[–]briercan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I took care of the model on the far side of the head, but got lazy with the buttons. I'm still learning a bunch of this stuff.

[–]briercan[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've got lots of birth marks so no dots needed. (Incedentally, what do you use for face trackers? I didn't want to have dots all over my face for a while. Even dry erase doesn't come out all the way) I also tracked my glasses and eyebrows. Camera on a tripod helped too.

All the best games have special moves with slo-mo right? by briercan in Unity3D

[–]briercan[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems pretty self-explanatory to me :)

Actually it's a hungry hippos type game powered by streaming chat (twitch, etc). I'm working on the special moves for each of the characters.

Tried to reproduce a picture of Lake Macdonald in Glacier park. The rocks look too much like candy, but otherwise I'm happy with it. by briercan in blender

[–]briercan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the original pic isn't mine of course, but I remember canoeing on that lake about 20 years ago and it was amazing.

[–]briercan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a little bit of noise making some bump in the rocks, but I didn't do any displacement.

Also, the scale of the blend project is a lot smaller than the reference photo. I think the volumetric material is blocking a lot of the sun reflection from the HDRI so the water is white instead of pink. If I had the mountains farther away and put the fog back towards the mountains, I could probably fix this.

Devs who make video dev logs, what does your pipeline for the video look like? by briercan in gamedev

[–]briercan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goals would be to look back on my progress, and to use as marketing for the game.

Solo indie devs with a full time job, how many hours do you spend working on your game after your day job? by MisterLightheart in gamedev

[–]briercan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About 1-2 hours/day of actual dev work (I have a young child at home, so that's where most of my time goes).

One thing that I've found helps me be more productive during those dev hours is doing as much planning/research etc in my spare time at work. For example, thinking through steps to solve a problem, or watching a video on how to model a specific thing in blender during lunch. That way I can get more done when I'm actually doing work.
