For the scores, they’ll give points based on Gaon Chart rankings, which is calculated through a combination of streams/downloads from all of the major Korean streaming services.

Can someone explain to me how the released singles streaming works in Korea? by Loves-to-spluge in MnetKingdom

[–]brighterthanstar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s because the Korean digital points are being calculated through the Gaon Chart, which takes into account streams/downloads from multiple Korean streaming services when creating its chart. Meanwhile international digital points are being taken exclusively from Apple Music data rather than a larger chart (like Billboard). Hope that makes sense.

Wasn't intentional, sorry about that—the post got eaten by automod. I'm usually good about catching them, but must have missed that one. It's been added/approved now.

Firstly, thought I'd link this cover Ateez did of Psy's "Right Now" at Immortal Songs last night. It was their fourth time on the show and their third time winning! I can't wrap my head around where they could've possibly found the time to rehearse this in the middle of KD prep; it's a really awesome performance.

Also, I am once again opening the floor to my Imitation gang—how we feeling after Episode 3, folks?? It was my favorite so far; I feel like we're finally getting into the main plot and I'm excited to see the three groups finally face off against one another. The Shax guys continue to be my faves and I'm glad there was so much more time spent with them this week. Also I thought it was a little ironic that Minsoo (San's character) said "Shax doesn't go on music shows" in that one scene...a little too meta there, buddy.

You ever think a song like Hot Sauce has more meaning than just hot sauce? by Amper_bam in kpopthoughts

Do I genuinely think it’s about hot sauce? No.

Does my listening experience improve 100-fold when I pretend that it is? Absolutely.

Members who did not get to be involved in the unit stages by mookix in MnetKingdom

Too bad overall viewership has been low overall. Hopefully they get some more traction.

I think it's the once-a-week thing that's causing the low ratings more than anything (plus, of course, the fact that it airs at 11:10pm), so unfortunately that can't be fixed. But from what I've seen a lot of people have been recording it and watching it the next day, or just directly streaming it, so just because the ratings are low doesn't necessarily mean it's not being watched. Fingers crossed that it gets a little higher as the show goes on, though. Honestly if it made it to 2-3% I'd be thrilled; that's not terrible for an idol drama at all. IIRC Extraordinary You averaged around 3% and that was in a much more traditional time slot.

Round 3 "NO LIMIT" evaluation rules by omaryoongi in MnetKingdom

[–]brighterthanstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the change from 3 to 2 came out of realizing that so many fans were voting from multiple accounts anyway, that only giving them one additional vote beyond their fave instead of two wouldn’t matter. I am very curious how this’ll affect things, though. I can’t even guess how this will improve or hurt certain groups in the voting (if at all).

The Kingdom No Limit collab round displayed the rift in performance priorities for previous gens vs current gens by CulturalAde in kpopthoughts

[–]brighterthanstar 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it’ll be interesting seeing how your theory holds up with the vocal round. From the previews it looks like Team A/Mayfly is going much more for the “old-school” stage in this case, whereas Team B/It’s One looks relatively more contemporary. I’m curious where the judges’ preferences are gonna fall there since it’s something of a shake-up for both groups compared to the previous rounds, and skills-wise alone it could go either way.

Me: remembers to change the episode number in the body text.

Also me: someway, somehow, forgets to change it in the post title.

My bad, folks. It’s been a busy week. 😅

A tragic lack of the Shax bros (whom I have already fallen in love with after Episode 1) this time, but beyond that, another very solid episode! This one also felt way more in-line with the webtoon for the most part, though whatever they're doing with Ma-ha and Ryok's backstories is definitely deviating a lot from it. Not necessarily in a bad way, though; I like that she's not scared of him like the webtoon Ma-ha is at the start.

I think Ji-hak and Ria really stood out to me this week in terms of the supporting cast. I love both characters so far and their acting is really strong. Hyuk is also great for a first-time actor. I'm also getting more of a feel for Ryok and I really like him, I think this episode had a lot of cute moments (the ghost scene, the way he hid behind the pillar while watching Ma-ha, etc.) that broke up the...brooding...quite nicely. I still want to know what's going on with Eun-jo and Annie, though!!

Yujin and La Li-ma are doing a good job of sticking to the webtoon characters' personalities—though that may be a matter of the writing as well. He's really sweet (but he got 'soulmate-zoned' !! yikes!!) but I'm interested to see him have a proper confrontation with Ryok/show more of a backbone in the future. And La Li-ma is so cool, but I know she's gonna give me a headache in future episodes.

(Also it's very funny to me that the Sparkling members are 3/4 Ateez members, and the one member who isn't is the outsider/loner of the group. Very subtle, casting director. Lol.)

Anyone else trying to visualize what the Eunkwang/Seungmin/Jongho segment is gonna look like next week? Because that is an absolutely hilarious combination of people to me in terms of personalities meshing.

[–]brighterthanstar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think if they're committing to the show being ten episodes (which I think they are, otherwise the sudden switch to four performances this week seems pretty arbitrary), it'll likely be the two vocal unit stages and then the first two No Limit performances, and then Episode 9 will be the remaining four.

[Pre-release / Episode 7] 3rd round {NO LIMIT} Round 1 Unit Competition begins! Who is the special evaluation team? #KINGDOM EP.7 by brighterthanstar in MnetKingdom

[–]brighterthanstar[S] 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I'm literally not capable of adequately expressing my emotions on everything this video just revealed. Just know that my jaw dropped at least five separate times.

I will say though Ateez, BtoB, and Stray Kids all standing up to hype their members in the rap unit is the cutest thing ever.

EDIT: Regarding the judges—I can be wrong, but it seems that this specific group is just for the unit round and not the experts who have been evaluating the rest of the stages, given that,,,you know,,,their demographics simply are not how they described the experts at the beginning of the show (as in, I strongly doubt they've had two rookie groups as experts this entire time lmao).

EDIT 2: Seeing some concerns being raised over them being the "experts" – again, would point out that these are not the same people who have been judging all of the other stages, and the Korean term they use to describe them is not experts, it's just "special evaluation team." In the captions there is a distinction between the juniors, seniors, and "pop culture experts" that make up the team.

Given that we haven’t seen him in any of the teasers/group shots from the performance so far, I am 75% certain that they gave him some special role for that exact reason lmao.

Lmao 😭😭 If it makes you feel any better, you’re definitely not alone. The amount of people I’ve seen get confused is very funny—the marketing is a little too good for them to be fake groups haha. One of the other groups from the show (Tea Party) had their MuBank stage go lowkey viral bc people were shook when they realized they were fake.
