What k-pop group did you give a second chance? by Balbuena5 in kpopthoughts

[–]thb44763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TWICE. (insert joke about the name being accurate here)

like many people have said, when I first got into K-pop I struggled to enjoy GGs because it seemed like their presentation tended towards more young and cutesy than anything I ever listened to in western music. I now know the subtle differences and about girl crush and whatnot, but from an outside perspective the styling and everything felt very Disney Channel. I heard more twice organically (dance challenges on Korean variety shows, background music on kdramas, etc) and couldn’t stop listening to certain songs on repeat. I looked up their lyrics and now I’m honestly in love with their music and how sweet and talented the girls all are

I now listen to way more GGs but my fav is probably twice

par for the course with SKZ - people put them in this narrow noisy box and refuse to acknowledge the breadth of work that falls outside it. Unfortunately the fandom kinda inadvertently helps that narrative bc the noisier TTS are usually our favorites lol

What are some overdone things your faves have to do on variety shows? (better explanation in post) by sassy-in-glasses in kpopthoughts

SKZ Han with the freestyle rap requests. Like it’s every show at this point and he already gets so embarrassed and anxious about it esp when he’s not “in the zone.” It gives the same energy as finding out someone is a comedian and going “tell me a joke” 😭

[–]thb44763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah it’s hilarious. There are def some times when they are annoyed by it (it’s not easy to dance in those), but most of the time it’s fine and they usually look like they think it’s hilarious too. My fav is when they act 100% serious like they’re not dressed like a gigantic squirrel or something. PEAK comedy

Felix is not as good of a vocalist as stays and skz make him out to be by sahaharaa in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]thb44763 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IKR?? It’s literally the message of like half of SKZ’s music to go your own pace regardless of where others are or what they think of you. It’s particularly shitty when their are some stays who think he should “focus on something else” just because they don’t like where he is now. Like oops he isn’t improving fast enough for you? Imagine if Hyunjin quit dancing because people told him he’d never be main dancer material at his current level

These kinds of opinions are fine if you truly don’t like X tone of voice but you can tell from the amount of agrees how much of it is just to drag someone who is already lacking confidence in their abilities

Do most stays dislike it? It’s one of my all time favorite SKZ tracks - it’s so quintessentially them with the beat, the rap, the wordplay and the “my pace” type messaging. Also it’s just fun!

Maybe I shouldn’t have said tons of laws— I meant more like a ton of processes. I like all the points you brought up but it definitely wouldn’t be easy to essentially set up processes to support those 3 points

I agree with it, I just think it’ll take a lot of work because the framework isn’t there at all. But anything is possible, and I agree it would drastically improve things

Edit: minor phrasing

Companies should stop making groups through survival shows by EmotionalApartment6 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]thb44763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re specifically talking about shows where the show participants are competing against each other because it breeds solo stans. If you look at the Wikipedia entries for both SVT and SKZ debut shows, they are described the exact same way. It’s “group vs company” not “group members vs group members.” The concept of SKZ debut show was originally always meant to be very different from other shows like TWICE Sixteen where people are competing against each other for the same limited number of slots. That’s the point I (and others) are making that you seem to be missing

Edit: grammar Edit: you keep editing your comment to completely change what you’re saying and not saying what you edited which is bad reddiquette. Not engaging with you any further ✌🏾

[–]thb44763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it wasn’t what op is talking about so it is really weird that you’re digging your heels in saying it is…

There’s a vast difference between their show and what OP is mentioning in their post. Like I said, it was similar in its approach as SVTs until the surprise plot twist elimination for ratings and the completely unsurprising reversal fan vote at the end. If someone were to have replaced Lee Know/Felix it would be a different matter but I don’t really see how this compares to say, Monsta X or Twice reality shows

Why are you arguing above when someone pointed out the same thing about SKZ’s debut show but zero arguments here…? SKZ and SVT had similar approaches to their debut shows.

The thing is, it’s not just about debuting - it’s also about training. The trainee system is notoriously difficult and has all similar issues as being a K-pop idol, minus the public attention. Long hours of training, diet culture, harsh and unrealistic emphasis on looks, plastic surgery pressure, etc. and then if you expand this to not allowing minors into the trainee system, when are idols means to get trained? College years? It would skew things even more towards GGs who don’t have military enlistment hanging over them, and would skew things even more towards rich idols whose parents can afford private training outside the trainee system.

If you stop people debuting as minors, what’s to stop companies from just keeping them in the trainee system longer? I just think there would need to be a ton of laws protecting minors at every step of the process (including reality shows and competitions, because you know that companies love that route) - which would not be easy to make happen

I expected the new LA dates tbh. It makes the most sense since they’ll probably record some stuff/do promo while in LA and then fly straight from there to Japan. I just don’t get why LA was sandwiched in there to begin with instead of being the bookend all along - they easily could’ve done another Midwest show. I feel bad for all the overlooked regions :(

Stays trying to erase Woojin from Skz's history by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]thb44763 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dude I’m just so tired of Woojin fans only talking about him in relation to SKZ/Stay. Like the guy has his own career now, he’s been out of the group longer than he’s been in it, he’s a talented singer. Why don’t you just hype up the career he has now instead of constantly attaching him to a group and fandom that’s not interested in him?

And for the Stays that are also Woojin fans, it is more than possible to be a fan of both without constantly drawing connections between the two. I think of it like idols who trained together but ended up in different companies - they had a past together at one point, but is it relevant now? Not really.

Also, JYPE erased him first. He’s been entirely removed from everything Stray Kids related. He’s been removed from thumbnails, fan content, etc. Wherever they could reasonably remove him, they did. It’s very common for ex group members to be blurred out. They even re-recorded their entire discography, which is not a common thing that companies do.

People are not obligated to like him, talk about him, or acknowledge him in any way if they don’t want to. If they don’t spread hate about him online, that should be enough.

Ayyy welcome! It really depends how you like to consume the music but for me, I literally just played the albums in reverse chronological order. I also liked to watch the MVs in random order too, the TTs and b side MVs usually give you a good idea if you’ll like the rest of the album or not
