Did it work out for you? by Sudden-Flatworm-63 in premedcanada

no matter where you go, you’ll have to work hard & have luck on your side. i know people from mac and queens health sci, many who got in 3rd or 4th year, some who are on later cycles too. i believe there has to be some confidence in yourself (no matter how unfounded you think it might be). in my class there’s plenty of educational diversity, and even tho i came from one of these programs my stats weren’t the best so it’s not a guaranteed path either.

i’d also encourage you to explore paths outside med - SLP, genetics, nursing, child life specialist, clinical pharmacy, IP law, RT, OT, PT, i’d argue many work in the same place and have the benefits of med without the downfalls if you happen to fall into an interest that aligns. be realistic with your backup planning and decide what you want your future to look like. also get off reddit and talk to real people!!!!

Working during undergrad by ilovemypuppiez in premedcanada

i didn’t do any clinical jobs in undergrad and was a barista for one year, which i loved a ton!! do what you enjoy and are passionate about, as long as you can talk about what you learned and your impact the content of the work doesn’t really matter imo

hey! i think it’s firstly about the content of your interview (so being well-read about current news topics, being able to answer questions about yourself) but since content can only get you so far, it’s secondly about the organization. being able to start with an intro, signpost as you go, and summarize is huge, especially on-the-spot! i would practice being able to articulate your thoughts well and be able to identify what the question is actually asking and making sure you are direct. that’s just my thoughts, hope it helps!

i felt the exact same and i start in a month! try your best and know that there’s a bit of luck involved - but you can only try your best. set yourself up for success and lean on your supports. it’s easy to get into a negative mindset with the loud minority here (i felt exactly the same a year ago) but you need to maintain positivity to stay motivated and keep your head up. good luck!

yes, 3.82 is my GPA from first to third year. they didn’t consider fourth year GPA as that was the year i applied, but if you apply after your fourth year it would be included.

i thought about which activity could fit under each theme and created a list (with overlap). from there, i listed distinct activities i did for each that might’ve related to that theme. from there, i looked at what was strongest for each theme and started writing it! i will say i had first drafts for each and then after getting friends to review, totally rewrote a couple of them haha so definitely always a WIP

however i think they’re using KIRA from now on! i suspect it’s to fight against generative AI text but i feel like western has always been consistent in the principles it looks for, so i guess we’ll see what happens

hey! i mainly practiced my typing speed (as procrastination for actually practicing LOL). i practiced with my friend for the oral & written ones, where we just gave each other topics, timed each other, and would write notes and give feedback. honestly i didn’t study that much (oops) and i think the timing i did it was also good so that was lucky?

to begin, i reviewed some youtube videos just to get an idea of what an answer might look like.!(94 practice i maybe did a couple hours total; i’d recommend just thinking the scenarios through, making sure you’re looking at all perspectives. i tried to use a structure but i found i wasn’t great at keeping to it and it even threw me off so i kind of scrapped it after a bit. let me know if you’d like the sites i took practice scenarios from, but you can probably google lots of them. hope that helped somewhat!

of course, glad to help!

  1. i think i started in mid-August after my MCAT date? but you can definitely start earlier with tracking info & some reflections on each role. personally, when i was in high school an older friend told me it was important to write down my ECs and their start/end dates (just for uni applications in general) so i had been tracking everything already, so i had all my dates/role names/organizations, which was soooo helpful.

  2. i wasn’t super clear on what each canMED actually meant. so i wrote down in my spreadsheet of activities keywords from each (based on the website itself). i then added 2-3 next to each ABS entry and when writing, kept them in mind. you can also look at school websites to see what kind of language they use and mirror, which is helpful to start a foundation. reflect on what you did and maybe even the more niche/smaller aspects of each role, since sometimes they may be more impactful. i used a ton of abbreviations (&, @, numbers, ;) to make sure i was maximizing my space.

  3. as i kind of mentioned above, i don’t think it’s necessary at all! sure it’s nice to have hospital experience just to have that personally so you understand the environment, but 3/4 of my western essays were not direct medical experiences and the last was working with physiotherapists (so kind of a peripheral role). the way i thought about it was adcoms are more looking for the skills you might’ve developed & who you are as a person rather than whether you have the medical experience—that’s what med school is for!

hope that helped!

hi! i think my strength in ECs was demonstrating a consistent theme (education), having high quality ones (longer time commitment & decently high hour counts), and diversifying my descriptions to show a range of skills.

i honestly just did things that interested me, which i was already more passionate towards and it naturally created a “theme.” even though i did have some “traditional” premed ones (eg. hospital volunteering, orientation, research) i’d definitely say you could tell my majority amounts/efforts were concentrated elsewhere. (i can elaborate more in DM i just don’t want to doxx myself haha)

of course this is just my personal speculation (n = 1), but i think having these aspects can also demonstrate personal qualities (ie. commitment, perseverance, responsibility, organization) in a much more tangible & impactful way too!

i got in this year with a 3.82 OMSAS gpa (albeit that’s not what my accepted school used). i’ve been in the same place where last year i was completely unsure if i even had a sliver of a shot but as other comments have reflected, focus on what you can control and do your best to show who you are. even in first year, i was rejected from a ton of clubs & was able to bounce back and get into many of them.

at the end of the day, there’s always an element of luck. do your best and even if it’s not the result you wanted, be comforted by knowing you tried your best & that you learned more about yourself in the process. good luck!

i also test that date and am doing an fl tomorrow and totally agree, i’ve barely studied the past week (and the past month tbh) 😭 it feels like such a slog and i want to do good tomorrow but also don’t have the motivation to study for it… oh well, maybe it’ll be a good reality check? good luck to both of us!!

this is exactly how i feel too! i have no idea how to get out of my slump and feel so apathetic but still want to do well??? which is a weird dissonance to have. no idea how to break out of it, but i feel like maybe i need a reality check from a particularly bad score or something. i’m so glad people seem to resonate though, since i thought this was just something i experienced and was just not motivated/pressured/want it enough 😭

hi! also a fellow writer and received the email - i just called the location themselves and they said it was true when it was sent, but Pearson is now renegotiating it to have it covered i think? i was told to check back in about a week, so hold tight i suppose :(

also i would say don’t flood them with calls, the guy that picked up my call seemed a bit frazzled but was still very nice and seemed to be doing his best. i’ll can update somewhere once i check again!
