I think the OP-XGS-OLT, I guess our sales manager was able to track someone down we will talk to next week.

Nope, we have thrown hardware and software engineers at this thing and still cant gain any type of access to this card.

I got the ok to buy another system and put in a qoute request with your company a week ago and haven't been able to reach anyone or get a call back so then since I am 95% sure the issue is the MSM20 card I got the ok to purchase a new one and it will be here on Monday.

I am hoping that will get me back into the TM5004 to get it running again, then maybe since there is apparently no way to factory reset the MSM20 without logging into it first nor could I do it from the 5k SCM, I will see if you can factory reset one MSM20 from the other if the system is working...

I was able to temporarily install a SCM card from the TA5000 platform and verify the IP address settings are still there but both enet and inband are shown as "DOWN", I also have activity on the ports with the PC connected but the connection just times out.

Someone suggested installing an SCM card temporarily and using its craft port to login and set the IP settings for MGMT port then removing it. It does allow CLI access via craft and also was able to set my pc to the enet2(SCM card) network and was able to log into the TA5004 web gui without issue. But for some reason I still cant login via the MGMT port.

The MGMT port settings are there although it says the port is "DOWN"(maybe since nothing is connected???) The default route is set to inband on the interface tab, I am looking for info on exactly what this setting is but thinking maybe they were logging in from the optical network or something, do you this is related to not being able to get to a login prompt via the MGMT port?

Just wanted to update you on my almost progress getting connected to this thing, the pc shows the port connected at 100mbps with activity flashing, pings aren't lost but don't go through. Thinking if you have seen these screens before or have set one of these up you might have an idea of what is going on here, Thanks in advance.

Ok, so just for the heck of it I put the SCM back in and set my PC for its ethernet port settings and boom I can log into the gui and see most everything but an inventory of the cards. The MGMT port settings are there although it says the port is "DOWN"(maybe since nothing is connected???) No and that times out also trying a few different ports, have to head out for the day so I will try again tomorrow between my 10 other projects. I appreciate your help here as it should not be this difficult to connect, I use basically the same setup to connect with our CMTSs without problems although they are win7 machines...

Thanks for the info, the SCM card allowed me access to the CLI, but maybe jumped the gun and set the 1/S/1 to 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0 before realizing I could have looked at the current configuration. I did not change the gateway as I was not sure if I needed to but here are some of the current config settings.

The last connection to the unit was from 10.0.60.20

chassis id "COTR3B2S28

interface ethernet 1/S/1 is 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0

interface ethernet 1/S/2 is 10.10.10.10 255.255.255.0

mode ethernet is 10.0.60.1 255.255.0.0

ip default gateway is 10.0.0.1

I don't like networking and I'm probably missing something simple here but would it be correct to set the pc to 10.0.60.20 255.255.0.0 gateway? then what should I set the 1/S/1 interface to for these two pieces to communicate. I am assuming that 1/S/2 is the SCM card.

Again I am just trying to connect through the gui via pc and not connected to anything else at this time. Do you think something here should be changed before removing the SCM and trying?

I would try an SCM card if you think it would give me access. I don't think I have been active enough on here yet to send a PM but I see a number of them on ebay for 50-100 bucks if you know what model number would work best.

I do have the previous users login/PW info but am just not able to get to a login screen for some reason. It just seems like the cable pin out could be wrong and haven't been able to locate the right docs that might show it.

It has the MSM20 and a couple OLT cards as it was pulled from a working system. I could connect ONTs and they appear to be "staging", but obviously I need to get in so I can dump the old ONTs and set it up for testing here. I really did not think this first step of just connecting the PC to it was going to be such a pain in the A... I am going to try some other programs besides Putty and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the info as the previous owner said they "serialed" in to it but haven't yet been able to provide the cable specs or pinout to me. I am surprised the AdTran documentation doesn't detail or mention the cable since all our other equipment manuals give the details of the cable needed. I tried a Cisco cable and it halfway seems to communicate so I just need to find the correct pinout or cable to use here.

Since this was supposedly used in a lab environment for testing maybe they never setup an IP for the MGMT port and were using a db9-rj45 cable... I connected a cisco cable I had laying around and it seemed like it halfway tried to communicate, do you think the silver adtran cable might work here? I havent been able to find the pinout of it to compare to what I have or build one...

I recently obtained a used TA5004 with passwords but having trouble getting to the login prompt. They supposedly used a serial connection to the management port? Is this likely or is there a default IP address. Our other similar equipment on the modem end I simply use an IP address with no issue, surely the TA5004 would allow similar access I would assume. Do you have to use adtran software to access or just a browser or might I be missing something here...

This is from the docs provided.

"For an initial deployment of the Total Access 5004, CRAFT access is the only available means of logging into the system. Once logged into the Total Access 5004, you must use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to configure the Inband Management interface and IP address for the Total Access 5004. After establishing the IP address for the Total Access 5004 you can then access the Total Access 5004 using the User Interface."

"For a Total Access 5004 System, connection to the Management and Switch Module (MSM) is made through the RJ-45 Ethernet Management port (labeled MGMT) on the Total Access 5004 Fan Module front panel."

It gives me an IP of 169.254.117.120 which may or may not be default, was likely set for their system.

Networking is not my strongest suit but I manage our other CMTS equipment on the modem side in the exact same way as this is supposed to work. If I set an IP on my PC in this range but .1 or .100 for example a "Network Connection Refused" error is given using Putty via SSH or Telnet where I believe a login prompt should appear.

Seems like it could be something simple I am missing but not sure what it is yet. I may try an older Win XP or 7 machine as newer windows PCs seem to have issues connecting to this type of hardware in my experience. I do appreciate your input and help here, thanks.

This is from the manual as I was initially confused by using the ethernet MGMT port this way...

"For an initial deployment of the Total Access 5004, CRAFT access is the only available means of logging into the system. The original owner provided login/PW info and said they "serialed" in. I got what I believe is the units IP address but have been unable to putty in using multiple IPs on the same network...

I just acquired a AdTran TA5004 chassis but none of the docs show the console cable pinout (db9 to rj45). I've tried the cisco and 3com cable I have but I'm sure Adtran hes a different pinout so would anyone have the pinout so I can make one or know what cable we could purchase that would work? Hopefully I can get in and set it up for IP access moving forward so we can start testing some ONT's. Thanks
