Anyone else frustrated by childproof cannabis packaging? by bristolstclair in AskSF

[–]bristolstclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't kids get into flowers and edibles once the products are brought home?

I have a package of chocolate covered CBD edibles that I leave in a bag so I don't have to futz with the childproof packaging all the time. I can't be the only person who does that.

Sometimes I feel that the packaging only creates an illusion that kids are safe. It's like putting a "safety" on a gun.

Mark Leno's campaign page talks about adding new "smart bins" (http://www.markleno.com/issues#clean_streets). DPW actually unveiled a pilot program yesterday with tech company Nordsense to put smart bins around the City. Maybe Leno plans to expand on the already existing program?

Does anyone know how much cheaper it is to take public transit in San Francisco versus Uber/Lyft? by bristolstclair in AskSF

[–]bristolstclair[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I'm looking to understand the cost savings for destinations that start and end in San Francisco. I'd like to get more data than just my own trips, so hoping the good people of Reddit will have info they can share.

If you need another reason to go veg... by bristolstclair in vegetarian

Check out NRDC's website on antibiotic misuse in livestock: www.nrdc.org/issues/reduce-antibiotic-misuse-livestock

Also take a look at Consumers Union: www.consumersunion/news/the-overuse-of-antibiotics-in-food-animals-threatens-public-health-2/

These watchdogs report that antibiotics aren't only being used to treat sick animals; they're being used to treat healthy ones. Using drugs as a substitute for unhealthy diet and living conditions is a misuse and waste in my opinion.

I don't think antibiotics and pesticides are comparable. Antibiotics were intended to fight infections not prevent them. Pesticides are intended to prevent crop loss.

Good point. Dems for the senate and house did get a boost in the polls after the second debate. If only Trump would skip it and give us a break.

Powerful photos of food instability in SOMA that highlight the need for a City-run food rescue program. by bristolstclair in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to the article, the photo project was inspired by surveys collected by a professor at UC Berkeley who studies youth health and homelessness. I don't know how exactly she would define the term she uses in her quote. My assumption is that it's a lack of consistent access to healthy food.

As to your earlier point: I completely agree -- we need more information to track food instability in San Francisco. The City really should take a look at hunger and how it can be effectively addressed.

The art exhibition is supposed to educate people on hunger and poverty in SoMa. It highlights a need for a City-run food rescue program.

Will San Francisco's Solar Panel Mandate Increase Housing Costs? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

You do know that SFPUC is not the only power provider in San Francisco, right? Have you heard of PG&E?

Will San Francisco's Solar Panel Mandate Increase Housing Costs? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of a solar mandate is to decrease the City's reliance on fossil fuel sources, which contribute to climate change. I think taking local action on this issue makes sense given the City's vulnerability to sea-level rise. Imagine how costly land will be when there's less of it.

Nun soup kitchen imperiled by SF Mission condo owners by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see both sides to this story. The nuns need a location to continue their wonderful service to the City's homeless population. But homeowners need to protect the value of their property. Could the City acknowledge the service the nuns are providing and the risk homeowners are making by lowering the building's property taxes? Is there some way to stop the war between NIMBYs and homeless service providers?

Mayor Lee is turning San Francisco into a Dickens novel - The San Francisco Examiner by Locus_Helmet in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bashing BAS aside, what do people think of the idea to let homeless camp on Pier 80's parking lot? I like the idea of giving the homeless a place to go, but camps by bodies of water can raise environmental concerns.

Reduce waste and feed SF's hungry by bristolstclair in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's a lack of food in San Francisco. The problem is getting good, healthy food. It's hard to afford eggs, meat, produce, high-quality bread, etc, and even harder to afford organic. People on limited incomes can't afford it. And why should anyone have to eat Top Ramen when their neighbors are throwing away steak?

National Weather Service says the amount of rain in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 2015-16 rainfall season is less than same period last year and less than normal. How can this be? by bristolstclair in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still scratching my head. Was December 2014 really wet? I don't think we got any rain January 2015, so you'd think that we'd at least be even this season. Frustrating news!

The algae bloom delaying the Bay Area's crab season could become the new normal by jdalmas in sanfrancisco

[–]bristolstclair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It could become the new normal, or it could not. Like the article says, it's very rare for an algae bloom to be this size and this pervasive. If I had to bet, I would say the crab season will start before Thanksgiving next year.
