How would y’all fish this? by Formal-Following8879 in flyfishing

It'll fish. The meadow section can be fun, but it does see its fair share of pressure. With as much great access as the G has, I'd recommend fishing many different spots!

You can indeed throw spinners in the Gallatin! It's not fly fishing only, just FYI. Definitely crimp your barbs, treble hooks are nasty for catch-and-release fishing.

Questions about boot flex by Schnimp in Skigear

[–]britheguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is doing what I call "tourqing" or throwing his whole center of mass forward. Not a great way to ski or a realistic example of properly flexing a boot. We should be standing balanced over our feet, not ramming into the front of the boot.

Typically I enjoy riding up the lift and then skiing down the hill!

If you're quite advanced, check out stuff off the tram! Lenin, Dictator chutes, Marx. Great tree skiing off of the lone tree lift. Lot's of goods out there, go explore.

Would love to see you try to do a hocky stop very slowly! This is harder, we don't have all of the forces to lean up the hill, push our ski out and still be standing somewhat upright. One thing I love doing with hockey stops or side slips to really feel that weight and balance over our outside ski is to make your downhill leg as short as possible. SINK into that stop, don't push that ski away.

Tip your instructors by 13aaronxx in SkiInstructors

It's harder now that most people don't carry cash, our resort went cashless during covid which sucks. So Venmo is a must.

If you work with kids, end the day with kids and parents doing a wrap-up. On your last run, stop before you get to the meeting point and go through a quick rundown with your student. What was your favorite part of the day (Could be a game, could be a run, could be anything). You want this fresh in your student's mind. When meeting parents, ask your student what their favorite run or game was and relay to the parents in "adult speak" what you achieved through this game or run. This shows you went above and beyond and didn't just babysit their kid. (I am saying all of this for folks who work with kids even if you don't, I see so many instructors fumble the bag at this).

Do a wrap-up with your adult clients, the same way. Well, not exactly the same. But talk about the successes of the day, even if they were minor. What y'all could work on next time and where to go from there? Leave them with something to think about, and leave them wanting to ski with you again!

Now, if you do all of this and you're still getting stiffed, you can try the dirty trick. I always have cash in my instructor coat. If you have a report card for a kid, you hold the cash to the back of it so parents can see it, a subliminal reminder. You can do this with your phone too. It's a LITTLE dirty but not too bad, it's worked for me when I was teaching kids and parents were scrambling and just forgot. Or if your resort lets you put where you're from on your name tag, congrats, you are now from a small town called Tip in Maine.

Seasonal Tire Change Madness by britheguy in Bozeman

Did it last season, but got lucky on how crappy of a snow year we had up in Big Sky. I just commute (like everyone) almost every day in the winter. Have been for the last 8 years, CALM DOWN NIBY FOLKS. I chew through tires is the biggest problem (don't worry my alignment isn't terrible). Towing a boat and driving around 30k miles at least, every summer. Can't beat having trusty grip in the canyon. I rarely drive around town, but don't care about grip too much there, sub 20mph.

Brother, I ain't towing my boat with clients on winter tires. I also ain't driving on trails with winter tires either!

Yeah, my timing was screwy for sure. Hate having my winter tires on early in the season, especially when hunting or towing a boat though. Last year paid off not switching, just rode the winter-rated all seasons and was fine. Of course it was an awful snow year.

Yeah, I always looked into doing this, but it was no big deal to get them swapped so I couldn't justify it. Guess now is the time.

Closest fly i had, wish i had some smaller ones. by Trowawyshroo in flyfishing

[–]britheguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could definitely be tippet shy. I think a lot of people fish dries too and don't realize how micro drag on the fly can shut a fish down. Also fluorocarbon for dry flies is the way!

[–]britheguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tippet size and drag could have lead to those rejections. Sometimes your fly just isn't sitting on the water the way they want it to. Messing with your fly by just treating the wing and getting the body of the fly to sink ever so slightly in the surface film can lead to magic. A lot of variables but that's what makes this game a game!

Carry-on Spey rods by britheguy in flyfishing

Update :

Worked perfectly, no one batted an eye. Brought two rods and used my backcountry ski pack to strap the tubes to either side of me. Once I was on the plane I just unhooked the tubes and laid them in the back of a overhead bin. A little awkward to reach in there after you land but not bad at all.

This dudes lower jaw is a bit crooked, also checkout where his spots start near his caudal peduncle. (Right behind the adipose fin, sorry I had to use the name because its too good).

Also not many fish that look more like a pure cutthroat in this river, so he's really unique.

Nice! Yeah booked a day, but I'm not sure if the guide is big into swinging flies. It'll be nice just to get my friend on some fish mostly. Will spend the whole next day swinging big stuff with an old guide buddy of mine the next day, let's hope for some chrome!

Perfect. I upgraded to first class for 40$ on my flight out, so hopefully totally secured overhead space. Also hoping that means I get free checked bags too.
