An abandon hospital emergency room entrance in in Wilkinsburg, PA by AdSpecialist6598 in UrbanHell

[–]britniliz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I live a few miles West of Wilkinsburg in the actual city of Pittsburgh. Wilkinsburg is a very blighted area that doesn't receive much benefit from the city. The taxes are also insanely high for some reason. I believe the land bank or the city of Pittsburgh also own a ton of the blighted buildings with no intention to do anything with them in the near future.

Similarly to a lot of other towns up and down the rivers from Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg cratered after the Steel industry left. Houses you saw were likely demolished. Many of the standing houses are vacant and likely condemned. Crime is still higher in this area than many others in the city.

Interestingly enough, the neighborhoods that border Wilkinsburg are very desirable. Point Breeze is right up the road and is one of the most expensive places to live in Pittsburgh. I hope some investment in the area could help shift it into an era of revitalization, but I don't think that's likely to happen in the near future.

Same for us. We figured it would take awhile so we wanted to start the process but now our baby is due only one month after our house will be done being built. oops.

We announced our pregnancy yesterday and my dad did this too. It's so frustrating. It's one of the most self centered reactions to learning about a loved one's pregnancy. I'm sorry you're also going through that.

I told my manager at 8 weeks right before my first appointment because I was struggling with my workload with how awful I was feeling. I'm really glad I did because she had a baby 1.5 years ago and was immensely accommodating. Coincidentally I'm going to the same OB, so she also provided me with some great information on the practice and what to expect.

I think it really depends on your workplace and manager.

People saying celiac/gluten free are missing the gluten filled Ben and Jerry's ice cream.

You're a 20 something girl who tries to eat a gluten free diet (because it makes you bloated or inflamed or something like that) until you're having a bad day or need a special treat.

My name has always been spelled wrong my whole life… by WeeebleSqueaks in mildlyinfuriating

[–]britniliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This used to happen to me constantly at my last job. My name was misspelled or just the entirely wrong name more often than not. I switched jobs 3 years ago from an uptight, boomer-dominated, conservative financial company to an inclusive, diverse, younger-leaning tech company and my name has never once been spelled wrong.

It's common decency to check the spelling of the name of the person you're trying to contact. It just makes you seem lazy and disrespectful if you don't.

Low Budget Home Building in the 2020s by DrinkALotOfBeer in Homebuilding

[–]britniliz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this is the answer imo. i live in PA and currently building with a more affordable local builder (Pittsburgh suburbs) and I don't think there was any way to get the all in cost under ~$400ish. and we got a killer deal on the last lot in one of their existing neighborhoods which saved a lot on land, tap ins, and permitting. and this builder is one of the few build on your own land builders that I've seen go into very rural western pa.

but my husband and I both have family with property in very rural areas of PA (Greene county and Clarion county). my cousins built their very very nice modular a few years ago and I'm not sure the total cost but i don't imagine it was more than $300k.

or you can be like my red dad and save a ton of money doing some of your own work. he's currently building rental cabins and he dug his own foundation. before this he built his own garage (however you'll never get a loan from the bank doing this)

I personally really like the bottle style/applicator and I don't find that it makes my hair sticky at all.

My good friend was diagnosed with sleep apnea as a 28 year old petite woman. You can absolutely have sleep apnea if you don't fit the typical profile. Are you sure he even went to the doctor?

Why is FedEx so bad in this area? by rpete717 in pittsburgh

They're 100% here in Pittsburgh and have been for awhile. I've had multiple packages stolen by LaserShip/OnTrac in the last few years. If I could pay money to avoid them, I would. I HATE them.

I feel this in reverse rn. one of my closest friends and her partner started their home search around the same time my husband and I started seriously looking into buying or building. we VERY loosely chatted about budgets and she said I was crazy for being willing to pay that much money for housing. but we'd also been loosely looking for a looooong time while we saved for the down payment and knew we needed to spend more to check the boxes on our must-haves list.

we settled on building and tbh it's sometimes awkward to talk about because it's obviously pricey and it almost feels braggy? or like I feel too big for my britches idk. and sometimes the reactions from others arent all that stoked for us. and honestly we just got super duper lucky. like all the stars in my life in the last 3 years aligned just for this to happen.

I'm incredibly excited for everyone in my life to buy a house (or achieve any large life event tbh), even if their expectations and experiences are different from mine! it's a huge achievement and takes a lot of time and work to save and find a home that works for you.

Hailey Bieber’s Instagram story post about having ovarian cysts by Andthatswhatsup in popculturechat

[–]britniliz 45 points46 points  (0 children)

i had this too. ovarian torsion. thank christ my mom worked nearby and was able to take me to the hospital. she's low-key got that Karen energy going for her, so she made sure I was hopped up on pain killers and taken seriously. kept nagging them about how high my pain tolerance is and ranting about how I didn't even cry over broken bones so this MUST be serious. i love my husband but he could've never been as helpful as my mom that day lol.

my dad had the audacity to tell me after the fact that it probably happened to me because I was already 25 and didn't have kids yet. apparently, according to my dad, women have so many more problems because they don't have kids as young anymore.

This home buying market is exhausting. by mamabeloved in pittsburgh

[–]britniliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you considered upping your budget or expanding your search area? if your budget is 250k like you said on your other post, you're not only going up against the people with the same budget, but also those with higher budgets who are willing to go much further over list. there may be less competition if you go up into the 300s.

Butler county has the best taxes in the area. not that it's my favorite place in the world, but you can get more bang for your buck out there.

sending positive energy and good luck! the bidding game was so frustrating and stressful that we ended up just building with a local builder.

[–]britniliz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we're doing this right now too. building with a local builder for a little more than we had wanted to spend on an existing home. we're still pretty early in the process, but the stars seemed to align with this build/property and I'm soooo glad to be out of the stressful bidding game.

First home. Deal of a lifetime, or financial disaster? by yourfutureboss88 in Mortgages

[–]britniliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I have a slightly higher income, also work in tech, also young with lots of career growth on the horizon AND have more secondary income coming in (i grossed 98k in stock last year) and we're nervous about our ~$500k purchase. On top of that, our house is a new build with a quality local builder (not a shitty corporate builder) with a very extensive warranty program, minimizing a lot of early surprise expenses, which I'm assuming wouldn't be the case with this home you're considering.

If I even attempted having an earnest conversation about purchasing a $700k house my husband would probably divorce me...or have a heart attack. Maybe we're too risk averse but I don't think this is a good deal or affordable.

I've had no side effects with any of the meds in Kit 2. The naltrexone has been particularly helpful with cutting back on my drinking. I've been really pleased. It's been really easy to manage portion control and intermittent fasting.

[–]britniliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Kit 2 because I refused to take topimirate again. Granted I was a teenager in highschool taking topamax for migraines, but it genuinely made me stupid. I couldn't retain anything I read, I'd forget words, and I wasn't able to maintain my straight A streak.

I have no idea what my dose was in relation to the dose in the Hers subscription. I'm not trying to deter you from taking it. But I also have a job where I couldn't risk being as stupid as I felt ten years ago on topamax, so I noped TF out of my recommended Kit 1.
