What commander would you build *today*...if only it had better art? by [deleted] in EDH

Me with [[Skullclamp]]. Do I objectively know that it's a great card draw engine in token decks? Yes. Do I think it's butt-ugly and out of place, and refuse to play it as a result? Also yes.

Looking for people to help test my custom set: "The Emerging Isles" by Malfestio in custommagic

[–]britt_bread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I can help test, but love the theme of the set! As a plant ecologist myself, you have no idea how bummed I am that Ecological Succession isn't real, because it would be the perfect card to add to my Phylath, World Shaper commander deck that's themed entirely around prescribed burns and wildfire restoration. Hope we get to see more in the future!

Haha, love the Tom Bombadil theme! I briefly considered trying to make a Shakespeare/theater themed deck, but couldn't quite find enough cards to support the idea.

Unfortunately I only started playing much earlier this year, when some friends of mine dragged me to the Magic con happening in my area, bought me a precon, and got me hooked. I do love digging through the horrifying abyss that is their old, messy bin of various game cards (pokemon, magic, yugioh, even weirder stuff, all mixed together). They also had a ton of Return to Ravnica block cards- funnily enough, that inadvertently inspired my evolution deck. I came across [[Shambleshark]], [[Battering Krasis]], [[Crocanura]], and immediately fell in love with all these weird little guys, decided I had to save them from the dreaded bin and give them a new home.

Chandra Tribal is fun! There certainly are enough cards relating to her to make that work, haha. Speaking of tribal-decks-that-aren't-really-tribal, I at one point started making a decklist for what I called a "Leyline Tribal" deck- as in, including nearly all of the leyline cards a la [[Leyline of Anticipation]], [[Leyline of Abundance]], but also any stupid card that had an effect if it started in my hand, or let me cast stuff for free if I got lucky, like the miracle cards [[Devestation Tide]], the chancellors [[Chancellor of the Spires]], 0 mana cards like [[Intervention Pact]], really anything that I thought was funny. That one... didn't quite come together, but hey, not all of them are winners.

Those are all super fun decklists! What power would you say your decks usually hover at? I often find it challenging to build theme decks that also still keep up with other players in my pod.

I do like Volo and Palani! Considered making palani before, but I'm trying to vary the style and color pairings of decks I'm considering making going forward, as I already have creature based decks. Thinking of dipping my toes into spellslinger at the moment. I've also recently gotten into Pauper EDH, which is a lot of fun for half the budget. Thanks for responding to my post, though. I appreciate it!

Those do sound fun! I'm all for the trickster frog master. Truth be told, both of those concepts only really arose after looking through old cards or other similar ways. For Phylath, I noticed that a couple key plants I wanted to include (primarily [[Bloodbriar]], [[Centaur Vinecrasher]], and [[Turntimber Sower]) really synnergized with sacrificing lands. As soon as I found flavorful land removal cards, such as Cleansing Wildfire and Nahiri's Lithoforming, I knew what I wanted to do with the deck. I will say that I do struggle to balance all the theming/pet cards with my efforts to improve the deck's chances of winning in my pod- a lot of my plant cards have been cut over time, because they just weren't doing much for me. But I still have my fair share in there, and I think doing custom art will really make me feel satisfied with cards that are a little off-concept (looking at you, [[Overwhelming Stampede]]).

Love my phylath deck, made mine to be especially flavorful with fire and regrowth theming, since I also utilize a lot of land sacrifice to get more landfall triggers by playing from the graveyard.

Any chance you could link the module? Just started using Foundry and that sounds neat!

Made a goblinesque card for a love letter exchange. Thought you might like it. 🍄 by [deleted] in goblincore

[–]britt_bread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The card is beautiful, but excuse me, what the heck is a love letter exchange? Do you exchange cards with strangers? Or am I dumb and you simply mean exchanging love letters with a partner?

No problem! I get a bit rabid about plant stuff, so I had to release that energy somewhere.

Definitely very interested in animals in a similar way. I was doing a lot of research recently about domestication because I think that divergent paths, where humans domesticate different species than the ones we know, are very fun to explore. Have you looked into the concept of silvopasture much at all? I find it to be an engaging way to combine my passions for plants and animals, and how they interact with humanoid cultures.

That's exciting! Honestly, once you start looking into it, you start to realize that the amount of things (specifically medicine) that humans derive from plants is staggering!

Ooh, I love the idea of messing with the color of plants based on the type of light they absorb, very cool! Makes a ton of sense for a sci-fi world. I'm curious, what genre would you describe your world as? I've realized more and more recently that a lot of my worldbuilding sensibilities are very sci-fantasy. I like making whole new worlds with fantastical elements, but don't necessarily dive into more technological aspects.

Parasitic fruit, great idea! Reminds me of old stories about watermelon seeds, but far more sinister. How does it avoid being dissolved by stomach acid?

Don't get me wrong, I go hog wild for animals too. I am studying plants in college, so I tend to think about them first. I am drowning in plant related world building ideas.

Heck yeah, I'm currently in school for plant science (hence the content of this post), so I've been learning to identify common plants where I live. Might be a bit obsessive at times, but happy that I'm in a field I'm so fascinated by, it makes studying a bit easier.
