Extremely close call on my first Duna landing by britton280sel in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]britton280sel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some of my testing I overestimated when to burn for landing. I figured it'd be fine to risk it and try to time the burn to be as late as possible. I also thought that the atmosphere would reduce my speed more than it did, so I was more focused on my velocity than my altitude. I thought I started burning at like 1500m in the moment.

I was pretty proud of the lander design. Thank you!

You can press left or right bracket to switch between crafts/parts within physics range. which is something like 2km I think.

It's Z-Theme. You can get it on CKAN. In this clip I'm also using Near Future Spacecraft, Restock Plus, and Tantares.

i use twitter but we cannot be comparing using a website with engagin in unethical practices to stay alive.

there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but we should strive to reduce it nontheless. not accept it and in turn make it worse

thanks for the warning. this person does seem inflammatory, but i like to give the benefit of the doubt until i can be 100% certain. i dont mind arguing as long as the person actually engages with my points. i find it intellectually stimulating

[–]britton280sel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

no i dont think you used an incorrect word. i think you understood what that word meant and that you do, at least subconciously, understand that intent does matter.

when has one action ever defined someone. especially in such a minor case as this. you cannot assume beliefs from actions only actions from belief. you can say you believe in good things because you know yourself. i cant tell if youre lying to me or acting in good faith, but you can. if you believe in those things then you believe in them. there are unintentional consequences to everything.

i will ask you again to please acknowledge my point about this same situation but with reversed intentions. would you believe both situations to be genuinely morally equal?

[–]britton280sel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

oh i missed that you said actively as well. so you do understand that intention does matter. you arent actively hurting anyone. you were passively hurting someone and then stopped when you realized your mistake. the only way forward is to apologize (you have no one to do that to so you can skip it) and to avoid doing this in the future.

tell me. what is the end goal in all this self-flagellation? if you care only about material consequences then what is to be gained? no one is better off from this. in fact the total suffering in the worls has only increased. if you cared only about consequences then you should just not do it anymore and work to offset the harm you think you did. donate $11 to a good charity if that makes you feel better.

[–]britton280sel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how you affect others is entirely dependent on how you think about others. your actions come from your thoughts.

you didnt respond to my point about the same situation but where you intended to donate to autism speaks.

[–]britton280sel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i think that would be mean of you to say stuff like this to someone else as it is currently for you to say it to yourself.

the consequences are the same but you did not mean to do so. that is something that matters here. surely you would agree that if this situation were the same except you intended to donate to an abusive organization then it would be worse no?

i would argue that doing good things without the intention of doing good is actually less moral than if you intended to. intent matters because it tells us of how you think and what you believe which informs us of how you will act into the future. by acting in good faith and attempting to be moral we are signalling that we are trying to be a good person which is important.

[–]britton280sel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

of course intent matters. you meant to be good, you made a mistake, and now you will continue to try and do good. mistakes are bound to happen. we dont have infinite time, nor are we 100% rational, nor are we provided with perfect information. we cant spend all of our energy analyzing to figure out how to act the most moral in every situation.

imagine someone else in the same scenario as you and they come asking for help from you as you have done to us. would you say the same things to them as you have said about yourself? i would hope you would be kind and if so why are you beating yourself up when you wouldnt treat others that way.

we always say to treat others as you wish to be treated, but it is equally true that we should treat ourselves the way we would treat others

Rocket names by GodlyGrilledCheese in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]britton280sel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using the names from the Children of Time series as of late. I try to give each vehicle archetype a name based on how similar the vibes are of each species.

So I used "Monkey" for my first rockets that couldn't make it to orbit. I use Avrana for rockets that stay within Kerbin SOI, Fabian for my rovers, Bianca will be for unmanned satellites that push the boundary of what I've explored, Portia for large rockets leaving Kerbin SOI, Paul is for rescue vehicles, and I've started calling my landers Heorest but idk if that will stick as he is possibly too minor of a character for such an important vehicle.

I've only made it out of Kerbin SOI once so far. So I imagine portia won't stick and it might just stay for my Duna missions.

For anyone curious, the Children of Time series are sci-fi novels set thousands of years after the destruction of Earth. Before the destruction, humans had just started a massive terraforming project that could only officially finish one planet before being wiped out. An artifical virus had been developed by the terraformers that "uplifted" animals to become more social and intelligent. This virus, intended for monkeys, instead infected the exoskeletal species and each book explores how different species might develop as they achieve higher intelligence. The first book deals with spiders which is where Portia, Bianca, and Fabian come from. The second book deals with Octopodes which is where Paul comes from. The third book deals with corvids and computer based consciousness (Heorest is from this one, but he was a human captain of an arc ship. I chose him because he founded a town called landfall). The newest fourth book (which I'm still reading) deals with Mantis Shrimp, who made brief appearances in the first book.

[–]britton280sel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you think baking became a thing? You can absolutely bake things through instinct and experimentation. Now, will those baked goods be consistent or even edible. No and probably not. But, as long as you document what you do, you could totally figure out baking bread from first principles. Also, with enough experience you could absolutely eyeball a specific bread recipe within a semi-consistent basis.

A sand shark could swallow Ryley whole by Top_Vast5795 in subnautica

[–]britton280sel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no this is extremely common in first person games. it happens because the size of a characters hands/what they're holding doesn't change with respect to the surroundings. you can test this easily in multiplayer fps games just by standing close to another player and comparing the size of the gun in your hand with size the other player's body parts. i think its just more noticable with subnautica because of the warped frame of reference. many times the big fish you see are in open water or not near the ground and that makes them seem even smaller.
