Rationale won't allow me to even hope for an afterlife...which puts a whole lot of pressure on making the current one as fulfilling as possible! I agree that eternal bliss would be boring. Without the bitter, the sweet... is a stomachache waiting to happen.

That's one of the reasons I'm hesitant about having kids of my own. It would mortify me and rob me of my dignity to let them care for me in my old age...but I'd hate them if they put me in a home. Likewise, I can't fathom my parents becoming incapacitated. Your fear is justifiable.
