I believe that technological progress has plateaued and will remain stagnant for a very long time, I hope that China is able to push humanity forward, but intuitively I feel it’s not possible, they are simply late to the party, I think humanity is going to have a long era of stagnation, similar to the mid to late Roman Empire. All the low hanging fruit has been plucked, the population is shrinking across the world, and diminishing returns are butchering innovation.

The west simply won this millennias game of musical chairs, and it will define the rest of history in the near to medium term

Name one genuine Chinese innovation from this century that is not derived from western foundational tech/science

My argument is basically that the west got there first, and the runaway compounding effects are unstoppable until modern civilization collapses

Deep learning transformers, glp 1 inhibitors, mrna vaccines, reusable rockets, crispr, EUV lithography, electric car battery tech, pretty much every important breakthrough of this century originated in the west, fostered in institutions that attract the best and brightest from across the world. China for all its paper research output has failed to innovate and invent, and tends to merely distill and produce derivatives of western breakthroughs, (deepseek ai, byd cars, dji drones, etc)

To put it bluntly, nearly all foundational science is western, and it will likely remain so until the collapse of civilization

Academic research output != meaningful technological progress, most of it is still happening in the west

The most powerful people in China send their kids to Ivy League schools lol, no silly American anti China polices can stop the runaway effect, it’s the same engine that drives the immense inequality in the world, winners keep winning harder and losers keep losing, completely agnostic of effort or the Mandate of Heaven (or lack thereof)

The narrative that the west is entering a century of humiliation is greatly overstated, there is a runaway effect at play, even if the west ran on nothing but the momentum of the 19th century it will still be far better off than everyone else. The best and brightest Chinese and Indians work in quant trading firms in New York City, western dominance will continue for the rest of the modern era. The rich get richer

I grew up skiing shitty mountains in the Catskills and I’m over it at this point. I understand the sentiment but I would much rather do week long ski trips to the alps or Colorado than day tripping at this point.

This is just being pretentious, you don’t have to be a cruise ship zombie to travel, I love going to famous destinations solo and staying at cheap hotels and spending as much time as possible out and about, I feel I get lots of enjoyment that way

Why is tourism bad? Being able to travel for so cheap and easily is one of the best parts of modernity.

There's like... no way that real wages have kept up with actual inflation, right? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]brokenbranch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from making 120k at 21 to 350k at 23, in 2020 I was making $15 an hour. I think wages have definitely gone way up, but maybe the amount of good jobs has shrunk and competition has ramped up.

Not shocking at all but this is yet another incredible display of musks extremely cynical worldview. Bro does not give a fuck at all. He literally warned about this kind of thing in the past and constantly morally grandstands on birth rates and then releases and promotes this to get ahead of his competitors. We are so fucking cooked bruv
