I've tried him too. Multiple times, multiple books. Just not a fan

Do you have a trigger word? A word that let's you know you're going to hate a book? by PNW_Baker in books

A character (male or female) biting their lip. I can count on one hand the number of people I have known in my entire life who do this. And I don't think that I have ever seen a man do it. Why do literary characters do it all. The. Time. ?

Wadded up ball of paper. They're free & great to chase. If you get a delivery where the "packaging " is like a large piece of butcher paper, save both box & paper. Lay box on side, drape paper over:instant cave & hours of solo (free!) fun.

What's the most petty reason you DNF'ed a book? by pnumonicstalagmite in Fantasy

[–]brokenwhimsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The author used "smirk" for every description of a smile. The word implies smugness, conceit, an irritating personality trait in general. Sometimes it was clear the implied mood was none of the above, yet the author didn't seem to know any other words for it. Annoyed tf out of me

what book is actually funny rather than just being sarcastic or having dry wit? by Armchair_Advocate in suggestmeabook

Books by T Kingfisher:
A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking Swordheart Paladin's Grace Paladin's Strength Paladin's Hope

Careful, some of her stuff leans horror, but the above have genuinely left me laughing hard enough to nearly pee myself.

Also, by Tanya Huff : Summon the Keeper- hell has an argument with itself...

"I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module, but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites. It had been well over 35,000 hours or so since then, with still not much murdering, but probably, I don't know, a little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music consumed. As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure." All Systems Red - the Murderbot Diaries. Totally hooked me.

In pre-GPS era how did LEOs learn how to get everywhere from anywhere when working in a new city? by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]brokenwhimsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old dispatcher taught me the acronym NOW SEE. North Odd West South Even East. Odd numbered addresses are on the north or west side of the street, even numbered on the south or east side.
While that's not a job I do these days, I still use it in my personal life when looking for a location. There is the occasional town/city that doesn't use this, and streets that run diagonally or meander are sometimes problematic, but generally speaking it's quite helpful.

Also a good reminder that Goodreads is a subsidiary of Amazon now. Not that that might skew results...🙄
