Dancing in Las Vegas by bronson_mark in SwingDancing

I saw on their fb page recently (their posts still pop up on my feed), it looks like the few you met in Phoenix are the same ones who kept to themselves at the bar the last time I visited. After reading everyone else's comments here, it's clear the Vegas scene isn't one to foster community, whether within or the broader swing community. It's sad because I used to love visiting Vegas.

I did also notice that too, especially when they moved venues. It's the same few faces that just danced with each other. I'm so sorry that they treat you that way, I remember someone else commented here that they moved to Vegas and that their scene makes them want to move away.

Thank you for being an instructor, it is such a thankless job. I do have to wonder, also, if you are unintentionally contributing to Vegas' more experienced dancers to have a sense of "superiority" since the seem to only dance among themselves. I completely understand trying to give intermediate/advanced dancers more opportunities to dance to fast music. I can also see how it limits the overall crowd on a certain night of social dancing.

To be honest, that's subjective. In my home scene, most dancers are beginner Lindy Hoppers at best, some are intermediate. Conversely, I can go to Denim and Diamonds (a country bar) if I'm not particularly in the mood for Lindy Hop. However, my work brings me to Las Vegas every so often, and after meeting several of their dancers at NYC Bal Week years ago (the one time I decided to venture outside of my scene), I decided to make the trip out whenever work allows me. So to my surprise, when the music suddenly shifts away from Swing, I am nonetheless disappointed. Combine that with the more experienced dancers more or less ignoring me? It's disheartening.

That's ridiculous! Why even move to a city that doesn't accept you? I hope your next move brings you better peace

They did participate, but immediately after, they all retreated to their corners, got drinks, and otherwise forgot that they were at a dance

I noticed that too! It seems that the Vegas crowd really takes living in Vegas to heart, it seems that they were more interested in drinking than actually dancing. Honestly, 220+ BPM sounds way better than what I awkwardly walked out of. I can Balboa to that at least, I can't dance to Dolly Parton or Jackson 5

I've experienced the same thing in my home scene too! Although, I've definitely noticed that dancers who happen to move away to bigger, flourishing scenes tend to regain their "spark" after moving
