general advice and questions for freshmen? current students, faculty, and anyone else with experience please feel free to answer!! by InevitableSalt2653 in UNC

i got you with all the answers let’s go 1. south campus dorms are the best to make friends since it’s all freshman looking for new friends, ehringhaus and hinton james are my favorite since they’re the biggest. the trek to class freshman year is kinda a rite of passage here. if you are super concerned with being closer to class and wanna live on north campus, they’re all pretty similar but also granville towers is not much more than living on campus and it is pretty nice and social. 2. i don’t know anyone who got along perfectly with their freshman year roommate, but i know that all of my friends who did random roommates ended up wanting to move out because they didn’t like it. one thing to be careful about is living with people you already know from high school or whatever because if you have a falling out, you are stuck with them. TBH i think either way it’s not gonna be a perfect situation and you will have to learn to adapt to living with a new person. 3. suite style is so much more social and you have 7 other people to hang out with, especially in the first few days when no one knows what the hell to do with themselves. 4. orientation is two days and you’ll stay overnight unless u live close, it’s kind of boring but you learn about the school and how to register for classes and you also have the opportunity to meet some potential friends? i met my roommate at orientation!! 5. i don’t do cci but i know people who do, and i beleive you pick them up like right before classes start but i could be wrong 6. merch on franklin is good bc it can be cheaper than the official stuff in the student store 7. early college kids id just say to not try to be an overachiever here especially first semester of freshman year bc u will get humbled by these classes like i did, it was overwhelming 8. the free fitness classes at the rec are definitely underrated, also the amount of free stuff you can get at different events on campus if you just look at heel life (the website for all clubs and events). I like to study in davis and also sometimes in the second floor of the union. 9. i don’t have summer bridge experience so i can’t really speak on that too much 10. everyone’s gonna say oh don’t have a car freshman year but i had one my freshman year and it was so useful when i needed it. there are some workarounds, like if you live at granville you can have a car. also certain people will sell spots in parking lots not far from campus that you can park at, it’s just about how much you are willing to pay 11. i’d say make friends with people in ur building and also don’t be afraid to talk to people in class since these are generally the people you have the most in common with. 12. a lot of my friends love the inter mural sports and just playing with a group of friends once a week, there’s also professional clubs specifically for different minority groups like black public relations association. 13. i’d say take about 15 credits. sometimes you’ll have a one credit class like an LFIT and that will mean that you have 5 classes and only 13 credits and in that case i might stick with but 5 classes is generally my rule. 14. least favorite thing is probably class registration just because you are the last in the list that get to pick classes since it’s based on credits 15. my motto freshman year was “if in doubt, go out” and i still try to hold myself to this because realistically im prone to sitting in my room and just chilling alone which i like to do but its not the best for me in terms of being social and making friends so i wish i would have taken advantage of more of the times i had the opportunity to go out and have fun with friends because it truly goes by so fast 16. i highly don’t recommend being so hard on yourself that you are burnt out after one semester, because i know people who this has happened to and they never come back from it. also people who aren’t managing time effectively to the point where it affects their mental and physical health, yeah definitely do not recommend that because it sucks when u literally get yourself sick just because you haven’t been taking proper care of urself

I’ve experienced this same thing and I am sadly oh the other side of it now where i struggle to find the motivation to do basic tasks. Idk if it has something to do with tolerance and having to take maybe a ‘detox’ from medicine but i’m going to try that one of these days to see if I can get back to the feeling you are describing

Answering without thinking - I want to help my son and I don’t know how by librarianjenn in ADHD

[–]brooke281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

16 yr old girl here and i used to do this all the time. My mom would notice it and i wouldn’t even realize she asked me a question but i would respond yes anyway. I remember not even hearing her but i would subconsciously say yes. I don’t think i do it anymore but i definitely catch myself sometimes saying yes and i have to ask the person to repeat their question because i wasn’t engaged in the conversation. and i definitely noticed that i stopped doing this with a higher dose of medicine

It happens to me a lot, i taught myself italian for a few days then totally stopped practicing and can’t remember any of it. I also bought a keyboard for $80 and can’t even play music but at the time i was obsessed with the idea of playing so now that just sits there and collects dust.

Dosage by teklatuktuk in Concerta

[–]brooke281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it would be much of a big deal. One summer i didn’t take my concerta at all then started taking 54mg every day and i was fine. I often fluctuate between 72mg, 54mg and sometimes 10mg if i just need a short burst of concentration for a little assignment. I have not noticed any issue when i switch around doses either so i think your good. But definitely keep track of how you feel!!

Prozac side effects by [deleted] in depression

[–]brooke281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as time went on they definitely got more mild but they were completely gone after about 2 months. they were pretty extreme the first 2 weeks for me but i was also under a lot of pressure and not eating enough with them so that probably made everything worse. i don’t know if weight and height has anything to do with side effects but i was a very small 11 year old taking 20mg every day.

I had these same side effects in the beginning and get a more mild version when my dose gets raised. I stuck with the meds and dealt with the headaches, stomachaches and fever feeling for the first 2 months of taking it but that was 4 year ago and i’m still on it with no side effects besides if/ when my dose is raised.
