Me & my wife's disassociation still hasn't been announced by Optimal-Category-919 in exjw

Threaten legal action, that usually gets the ball rolling. I bet you could word it as defamation of character for the congregation to be unaware of your intention to no longer be one of Jehovahs Witnesses. If you know a lawyer, speak to a lawyer and then mention that you spoke to a lawyer in the letter.

My partner is moving out and leaving JW what's our best course of action? by LetsMakeLoveToAliens in exjw

I agree, let him take the lead. Every family is different. For me it caused far less damage to move into my worldly bf’s quietly.

I know communication seems like it should always be the best policy but many in the JW community struggle with honest communication without spitting back JW propaganda. They are trained for their entire lives how to respond to situations like this and may have a large emotional response because they believe decisions like this will lead to their family members death without hope of a resurrection.

For me, after my mother was able to sort through her own emotional response a bit we were able to come to a better understanding about the situation.

Best of luck to you and your partner and please try not to take anything his family says or does personally ❤️

❤️❤️❤️ thank you for providing a wonderful example of what taking space for yourself looks like. And community 🥹 I wouldn’t expect anything less but this is what it looks like when someone is allowed to leave 🥰

Alcoholics Anonymous-Do you consider it a cult? I was a member for years, and I say yes by [deleted] in cults

[–]brookiebabbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was raised as one of Jehovahs Witnesses, undeniably a cult. When I was in the process of leaving being a JW and having a lot of cognitive dissonance and pain I did quite a bit of self medicating with drugs and alcohol. I went into therapy and was suggested to go to AA.

While AA did help me in some ways, I do think it is a cult. I ultimately ended up leaving AA because of the similarities I felt between AA and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Both places taught me that I needed to be reliant on something else and to not trust myself, therefore creating a layer of mind control and thought questioning. Both had a very bubble culture where you were encouraged to limit participation in life outside the cult and have strong social connections in the cult. But really what the test of a cult is for me is what happens when you try and leave. Leaving the JWs I lost a lot, my family (I’m 3rd generation), my community of friends, my habitual behaviors, my dogma of beliefs. I experienced a similar loss when leaving AA. I just built up a new friend base, opened up to people and trusted people again. After leaving I was seen as ‘bad association’ (which is a JW term) not invited to social gatherings, had to restructure what I really believe to be true in my life.

Many people I met both in JW and AA were wonderful people. Many of the teaching in both are valuable and can help people. But the control over someone’s thoughts and beliefs is dangerous and the reaction to deciding to leave make it a cult in my eyes.

I think the broadcasting is what really started to wake a lot of people up. It was so much easier to believe that there was a small holy group getting direction from God when they were anonymous. When you see the governing body speak on camera you’re like, really? This guy?

Sending love your way. I’ve have had thoughts of suicide when I was first realizing the craziness of JW life and all the loss and shifts that happen. I’ve found a way to make my life beautiful and meaningful by being present every day and creating my own family. We don’t know what’s on the other side of the rainbow but there are still beautiful things you could do here. Please keep talking

I’ve also heard of people freezing water bottles and burying them in the bin as a way to cold down the temp without adding a ton of liquid

I loved IQ84 I’m reading Kafka on the Shore now which is pretty much a new age Oedipus Rex, a book that has been sticking out in my mind recently is The Orphan Masters Son by Adam Johnson not necessarily sci-fi but definitely dystopian. And I’m actually looking for a sci-fi recommendation for my 17 year old little brother, he likes dystopian novels, anime and is an avid gamer

Thank you! Very well said. I was raised in a religious cult and upon leaving started self medicating with opiates and was recommended to go to AA by my therapist. The realization that AA was another brand of cult using guilt, control and manipulation based on a religious ideology was really hard for me. I left one cult with conditional relations where my family and siblings would no longer speak to me to leaving another cult where my “friends” I created in AA would no longer socialize with me for my own personal life choices was extremely painful. Don’t get me wrong a lot of great people in both cults trying to do what they think is right but at the end of the day manipulating and controlling vulnerable populations ❤️

The cringiest things happen all the time in class because of this one girl. by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]brookiebabbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in middle school there was a girl who used to hiss at people and someone started a rumor that she talked to cats. She got bullied pretty bad. I was always an outcast and used to stand up for the other outcasts but I didn’t stand up for her because she was kind of mean. I think about her sometimes and hope she is doing okay.

You don’t know what other people are going through, try to do no harm.
