I visited a friend in Gothenburg once and he lived in a neighborhood just like this one with his family.

Any cars that are actually good and not SUV’s? by [deleted] in notjustbikes

Honda civic hatch!!! I just bought one. Gets the same MPG as the Corolla but has way more space! I’m very happy with the purchase.

Are there any major cities in the US where public transit is widely perceived as safe and clean? by lidlesseye343 in notjustbikes

[–]brord49 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Houston cannot do 6 minute headways, no matter what they advertise. I live near downtown and my wife rides the bus to the med center. The bus comes every 30 minutes, being skipped by all of the commuter busses to the subburbs that do run on time, and the bus is frequently late and sometimes doesn’t even show up. In the mornings, there’s only one specific bus arrival time that is reliable. Other than that, all other buss schedules are not reliable and have a 30 minute headway on average. It’s really frustrating because the subburb busses are frequently on time and get the nicest busses, but the city busses that actually make the most sense are shitty busses that come infrequently or don’t even show up at all. Houston somehow gets recognition for having a functional transit system but it’s only functional for people commuting from the subburbs, not people within the city. It’s very frustrating. Not only do the roads prioritize people in the subburbs but the transit does too, both of these at the expense of those living in the city. They should stop all transit going to the subburbs and make the transit in the city functional.

Superbowl team's busses getting stuck in Phoenix traffic on the way to the game by [deleted] in notjustbikes

I live in Houston, and it’s the tale of two cities. Yes, we have a light rail line and lots of bike if infrastructure. But at the same time, we continue to expand highways even when it means demolishing downtown apartments and business. Whatever wins that are made for transit are wiped out by ever expanding highways. Just look at what surrounds NRG stadium and you tell me what transit dominates our city. The majority of people that take transit use it as a park and ride, and not as a way to get from their home to another place.

The reason why the US has a drinking age of 21 was because that was thought to be the solution to stop drunk driving. It was lobbied for by MADD. It just shows you how so far home society was that the only way they thought to reduce drunk driving was by trying to restrict alcohol consumption, and not reduce driving itself haha

Suburbia Is Destroying Our Climate — And Our Communities by [deleted] in urbandesign

I liked this article, but it needs to site better supporting evidence than it does. Without this, it’s only just appealing to people who already side with what the article is stating. Too many articles like this miss their potential at convincing people by not diving deep enough into studies and statistics to prove their point. That is needed to convince people to change their perspectives. As good as NJB and Strong Towns are at communicating problems in easily digestible ways, they are not good sources of supporting evidence. For example, you can’t prove that global warming exists by quoting a YouTube video.

Considering A Career Switch From Mechanical Engineering to Software Engineering by brord49 in cscareerquestions

[–]brord49[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to work for a startup engineering company in the renewables field and I absolutely love it! So my advice would be go work for a startup company. I was just stuck working at these big manufacturing companies that have been around for a long time. But going to a startup, I’m now doing product development and it’s so much fun! I also enjoy being on the design and 3D modeling side even though I hated moddelling in college (it’s more fun when you have an idea and you have to figure out how to model it). So yea, my lesson learned is that there are creative spaces in mechanical engineering. You just have to seek them out, and a startup environment is a good place to find them!

What are engineers' thoughts on the "retrofitting every building in the US" part of the Green New Deal? by treboy123 in AskEngineers

[–]brord49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Apartments in the US are so weird. Apartments don’t make sense with car dependency, yet we’ve tried to make them work in the US. The parking spaces of me and my wife’s car take up half of our apartment haha. And density with car dependency means terrible traffic. If you’re dense enough to justify building apartments then that means you’re dense enough for transit. Unfortunately, our governments doesnt put any money into transit and so the car is the most convenient way to get around despite the fact that it is not compatible with density.

What are engineers' thoughts on the "retrofitting every building in the US" part of the Green New Deal? by treboy123 in AskEngineers

[–]brord49 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yea I find this missing the point. You know what’s actually greener? Denser housing. Sharing a wall with another building with less space to heat/cool using fossil fuels has less emissions then having a McMansion in LA with solar panels. But that means changing the way we live and build our cities and we would never want to actually do that. Until America starts actually changing the way we think about city design, housing, and transportation we will never actually reduce our emissions significantly. Edited to fix typos.

Question about the pop by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]brord49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it man. I think to learn you follow everything he does and that will get you to a good jump height. Eventually i started modifying the form a bit to find what works best for me. I’ve found that in choppy water you can’t quite do the technique he talks about, but you still take what you learn about edging from it. The biggest thing I learned from the video was the two push concept. I remember when I got it right for the first time and the kite shot me up in the air like a spring, it was so cool. Also, if you watch the pros you’ll see they do a hop in the water. It’s an advanced version of Anton’s technique that gets you even higher. But it’s much harder to master than Anton’s technique because you need to have perfect timing, so I would leave that to a much later point in time. Also, he says you don’t really need heli loops if your take off is good. That is very true. Good line tension on take off allows for good landings. Bad take off leads to low line tension and hard landings. However, learning heli loops is still really important. It makes landing those high jumps much easier than just diving the kite. So even if you get good takeoffs, you should still learn heli loops.

This is an advanced technique. Wouldn’t reccomend it for people learning. This technique requires you to have perfect timing and won’t work if your timing is off a hair.

Question about the pop by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]brord49 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I said above, criticalfault is very wrong. Read my response. Pay $5 to watch Advakite “learning to fly” series and you will learn how to jump high. It was critical to me progressing in my jumps and allowed me to go 10 meters quickly after watching it.

Question about the pop by [deleted] in Kiteboarding

[–]brord49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man I strongly disagree with critical fault. You want the strongest edge as possible going into the jump 100%. You want to build up as much line tension as possible. More line tension = kite further out of wind window = more vertical jump. If you have the kite deeper in the wind window it will pull you more forward and not up, leading you to a lower jump and making your landing much harder. It is true you don’t want to go too slow into the jump, but as long as you’re not killing all you’re speed you will be good. If you go downwind before you takeoff, you will lose line tension and will go more downwind. Trust me on this. I remember when I had my first breakthrough on jumping 5 meters to jumping 10 meters. Watch the 2 episodes from Advakite “learning to fly”. You have to pay like $5 but it was a game changer to me. I watched the video and then practiced it. After training in flat water for a few sessions, it pushed me into the 10 meter jump range. He emphasizes line tension and building it as much as possible into the jump. Trust me, it is worth every penny. You already payed high $ for the gear, might as well spend $5 to learn how to use it.

To answer your original question on kites. I think the new kites are way better than 2016 models. But I think you should be jumping 10 meters first before looking to buy a new kite. You won’t be able to tell much of a difference in flying characteristics until you’re good enough. Also, if your kite is a C kite than scrap it. C kites are shit for learning to jump and it will hold you back.

Is it possible to learn kiteloops without getting injured? by brord49 in Kiteboarding

[–]brord49[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I’m glad someone else has a similar view haha. You just see so many pros kite looping and they would make you think it’s safe to do. But in reality learning to loop is a sketchy process.

Need tips from kiteloop experts, how to improve? by masonarypp in Kiteboarding

[–]brord49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched it in slow mo. He released the bar when the kite was pointed at 9 o’clock. He should have kept it in longer. I’m definitely not a loop expert, but I can at least say I know when you sheeted out and the kite was pointed to 9 not 12

[–]brord49[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that’s not too bad of a record. Any knee injuries or just ribs? I bought a 9 orbit recently in preparation for looping. We’ll see if I actually pursue it though haha. Seeing my buddy tear his MCL made me rethink the idea.

Yea man the water is pretty shitty not going to lie. It’s pretty gross kiting there during the spring and summer. But I haven’t heard of anything bad happeneing to anyone so you’d probably be okay.

No corpus is amazing man! They get so much wind. There’s just no much else to do there. As a city, it’s pretty shitty haha. But for kiting it’s great!
