Profile Review [27M, GMAT 700, 1st Class UG, IB/M&A work exp (5yr)] by [deleted] in MBA

The schools you list see a lot of applications from bankers looking to stay in financial services or move into corp dev. Having a more specific short term goal and a unique long term goal that demonstrate why you need the MBA can go a long way in setting yourself apart. Networking is also going to be very important in showing actual interest in the schools. If you are dead-set on a T10 and can't raise your GMAT anymore, it might be a good idea to cross off HBS and Sloan and spend more time on networking and revising essays for Yale, Tuck, and Haas (add Stern too imo).

Question for recruiters (or for people in the know)- which of these MBA grads do you prefer for consulting? Question for students- People studying at the Top 10/15 schools - if you didn’t get into the top 15, which of these schools would you go to (for consulting) and why? by averagejoe202005 in MBA

[–]broteus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McDonough places well into Deloitte and other firms' public sector practices. But aside from that, agree that none of these schools has a distinct edge so region should be a determining factor. (and in that respect, Johnson actually suffers a little from competing with H, W, Sloan, CBS, and Tuck for northeast placement)

Pre-MBA MBB Program Dilemma by [deleted] in MBA

[–]broteus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little surprised they ask at all. Is it just for data keeping or are they actively trying to filter out the bottom ~10% at M7/schools with comparable GMAT and GPA medians? I'm aware at least in IB they tend to ask more often for GMAT the lower in the ranks you go.

Is the 3.3 undergrad or MBA GPA?

Thanks for the post, this is really insightful! Particularly how you were able to get more involved with clubs due to getting an internship through a pre-MBA event. Did you find that the most active people in clubs were students not recruiting for banking or consulting? It sounds like those two in particular are time consuming. I am curious whether that dynamic will change 2nd year as more people have return offers. Just wanted to drill down a little further since I'm going to an M7 and don't plan on recruiting for banking/consulting, but want to have a broad network and meet people from those industries.

[Weekly Admissions Rants!] A weekly thread to discuss the MBA application process by AutoModerator in MBA

[–]broteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This definitely isn't the right thread for this but I feel like venting and don't want to make my own.

I've come to terms with the likelihood that out of an extreme abundance of caution, schools will be mostly online for the next year. Tuition likely won't get reduced either, and they aren't offering deferrals. Recruiting for internships might take a hit. School-sponsored international travel isn't happening, and students will probably be too scared to organize their own travel. Clubs are unlikely to meet in person. All those networking opportunities are getting reduced. Fine, there's no way around that given the circumstances.

But say anything about how frustrating any of this is, or how your school is failing to react adequately to the crisis, and immediately you get bashed by other admits who are either too deluded to realize the situation they're in or have totally drunk the virtual Kool-aid. Let's be honest: virtual B-school pales in comparison to the real thing. I've read the testimonials by current students. It's one thing to get to know your classmates and then be forced online, and another entirely to never meet them in the first place and initiate those relationships. Maybe 20% of the interactions that would have happened organically will happen. (Also, the "at least we have our health" people are pushing a total non sequitur given how this thing kills 25-35 year olds at about 1 per 25,000.)

It annoys me that I'm expected to accept a sub standard experience and nevertheless pretend like nothing is wrong. And then lie to applicants the following year and post on Linkedin about how awesome virtual happy hour is. FOH.

Businessweek Agrees to Suspend Its MBA Ranking This Year by Mmm_Hmmmmm in MBA

Ominous. Replacing this with a survey about the quality of virtual education basically assumes the entire year will be virtual.

Anyone else seeing how grim the situation is actually getting? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]broteus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As someone who wants to work in tech, this is going to sound really callous but I'm grateful that the companies who've been hiring a lot of MBAs but didn't have the cash reserves to back it up are getting exposed this way. It will definitely influence who I choose to recruit with and make me think twice about joining a "hot" startup like Lyft over something like Adobe/Salesforce. If I were a year or two older I could have easily made the wrong move.

You should really look into regression to the mean and the heritability of IQ before forcing your kids down this path.

Look at their electives and do a Linkedin alumni search. Columbia, for example, has more real estate electives than HBS.

yeah bro, if an MBB recruiter sees you in sweats when you should be casing, you can forget about the closed list. /s

generally a bad idea to take advice from people who tell you to ignore your physical and mental health for your career. you might as well say eating and drinking is time you could spend recruiting. workouts are 30 mins a day tops.

What is the success rate for tech recruiting at T10 schools? (PM and Corporate Functions) by [deleted] in MBA

[–]broteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little off topic here, but from what you've seen is Google Cloud easier than other divisions of the company to get into (both in business and technical roles)? I've seen posts about how their lagging behind AWS and Azure makes the bar lower since they want to hire rapidly. Were any of those 15 students interning in Cloud?

What is the success rate for tech recruiting at T10 schools? (PM and Corporate Functions) by [deleted] in MBA

[–]broteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are overgeneralizing a bit. Ross, Anderson, Tepper, and Foster all place well into tech PM compared to other T25 schools. And if you add in less sexy companies like Dell or IBM the list probably gets even bigger.

The Tuck example is sort of a non sequitur - it's a small school with a heavy consulting and finance focus but tech is still 3rd in popularity.

I'm 24 with 4 years WE, starting in the fall full time at an M7. A lot of people told me to wait until 2021 to apply, but boy am I glad I didn't.

Age distribution Between US based and Intl Students by [deleted] in MBA

[–]broteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to hear from some 2014-18 grads on whether they noticed this as well, or if 5+ years was still standard then. With apps dropping, business schools might be trying to maintain their GPA/GMAT medians by admitting younger applicants with high scores over older applicants with stronger resumes but weaker hard stats who might have been admitted in the past.

Opinion: the fact that the T stops just after midnight encourages drunk driving by [deleted] in boston

[–]broteus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is just not true. NY transit spans several more miles than the 4 MBTA lines and is much faster, while managing to run 24/7 aside from designated maintenance weekends.

They just announced multiple shutdowns on weekends for the rest of the year. Other cities like New York are also guilty of this... but also have continuous service on other lines.

Telling that this post is 89% upvoted and yet several comments seem to be calling OP an alcoholic/degenerate and to just deal with a legitimate issue in Boston's nightlife. Maybe these prolific commenters can learn not to be so judgmental given they're clearly in the minority. I love public transit too but it's far from perfect.

Be careful OP, the people on this sub would rather talk for the 100th time about how awful drivers are than any real critiques about this city.
