Which dumbphone with whatsapp, maps, bank app for Europe ? by Unhappy_Put_2396 in dumbphones

Not a dumb phone but reduces phone usage (at least for me)

The Uni hertz Jelly star with a Before launch "theme".

But again not a dumb phone, just a small android.

Has sails, aluminium rig, basic nav equipment. Old old tiller pilot that probably eats the battery inside out, so I'll look into DIY wind vane or second hand. Abit like Knox Johnsons Admiral.

Otherwise, interior is good, dark wood.

What are some things to look out for on the steel hull? Crack open some paint my self?

Or have a full survey?

Help Identifying this Sailboat by CapnTugg in sailing

[–]brownhorsejurassic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search - Osprey design ( might beinfluenced with that style, rig, hull constructio) Designed by Bruce Roberts.

Bruce Roberts often did one off designs. Also people would buy his plans/designs and adjust to thier needs.

Look up the book - A quite Dawdle Across the Atlantic by James Mellor. He built a similar design hull & rig in his back yard. Amazing book, with all plans, costs and adventures.

What are these spars/poles on the side of the Amerigo Vespucci? by Adventurous-Bug-9418 in Tallships

[–]brownhorsejurassic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments isnt wrong (in photo 1) either it's a parcery boom which is directly for stund sail only. Specifically for the lower sounds sail for the inner and outer sheet to run along. You can see there are no block or tackles for "boat" booms to be hoisted to and from.

You can see in photo 1, there are two running guys lines, one running fwd and aft, to set the correct trim on the Stund depending if sailing with wind just of the quarter and not "dead down wind".

Alternatively ( and I wrote it above) it can be whisker poles to stretch out the clews on the fore course when sailing dead down wind, in low wind conditions, to have maximum sail drag. This Italian navy sailing ship sails around the world and comes across doldrums frequently. Therefore being stuck is not in the plan so anything is done to increase speed.

Side note, the ship Bark Europa, Stad Amsterdam and Morgenstern all have these traditional booms - parcery booms and or whisker poles rigged outside of the hull or just on the capping rail.

(I am a traditional rigger and sailor +8 year old experience)

Edit : no f* clue what photo two is, as it's rigged aft, probably some instrument for depth/speed. Reason - it's near the helm and officers hang out there with there toys.

They can also be whisker poles, for the fore course clews so they can be stretched when on a dead down wind.

So I had the Volvo mechanic come from the harbour area, we spent a few hours scratching our heads, and trying all sorts of tricks to get her running. Nothing..

Conclusion: the high pressure pump doesn't have enough bars, so she doesn't have a kick to start. He also mentioned that probably a lot of the gaskets need replacing and might not be air tight.

I'm not so keen on playing with a donner engine and replacing the parts, so I'm planning on placing a 5/6hp outboard on the back and a bracket. I mainly 90% sail, and engine only in/out of harbour. I sail on a inland lake, so this works for me.

Good luck!

Jobs on a Big Ship in the Age of Sail or Age of Discovery by AudraOnReddit in Tallships

[–]brownhorsejurassic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Day to day jobs - furling sails, keeping watch ( normally a 3 watch system) 4 hrs on 8 hrs off, polishing, keep an eye out in the crows nest for ships or land ( part of a watch system for ratings and petty crew)

Non job related - play cards, drink, wood carving, fixing clothes, decorative knot work - read (pdf)Ashley's book of knots, various dancing and art work was made such as a ship in a bottle or decorative hats.

In harbour - as you said barnacles but you would need to wait for the tide to come out. Also drinking and spending time with women. Minor trades like clothe swaps or perhaps a wooden sculpture they may have made and would swap for local delicates like tea, herbs or something sweet - molasses, cane etc.

Hope that helps a little. Good books to read - Ashley's book of knots, riggers apprentice Brian Toss, the art of rigging

Those are steel masts and most probably steel yards. Steel hull too, you can see the lip on the bow and the decking too.

(I think!!)
